Tamahome's given name was Kishuku.  He is a member of the suzaku seven, sworn to protect the priestess of suzaku.  Although seemingly obsessed with money, Tamahome is very strong and noble.  He will stop at nothing to protect, and provide for those he loves.  He really is quite the hero, noble and willing to fight with all he has to protect Miaka.  At first, Tamahome views Miaka as a little sister, however, he becomes attached and finds genuine love for her.  He fights to be together with her, willing to suffer any trial or pay any cost.  Although asking money for his services, Tamahome charges very little...just enough to support his family.  He is very sweet, understanding, gentle, and tender towards Miaka and his little brothers and sisters.  He comforts Miaka when she needs it.  He is a little hot tempered, rushing into a fight, or insulting an opponent before they fight.  He is a passionate person, willing to fight to his last breath to achieve his goal.

Coming from a poor family in a small village, Tamahome has learned the value of hard work.  Having his mother die, as well as a sick father, and many brothers and sisters to take care of, Tamahome finds many odd jobs for pay (usually protecting people) in order to earn the money to support them financially.   He is very good with the kids, supporting them emotionally as well.  One day, his family is killed by Suboshi in revenge.  He is devastated at the loss of the ones he lived and cared for.  He made a vow that day that he now lived only for Miaka, to protect her.

He has strength, and great fighting skills as well as mastery of many forms of martial arts.

Tamahome's Kanji of Suzaku can be found on his forehead and its meaning is ogre.
