The Findeln stud was founded by Nancy G. Bedford at Schomberg, Ontario, Canada in 1961.
Mrs. Bedford started her children, Cynthia and Bryan riding on a Welsh Mountain Pony, Black Duchess
(by Coed Coch Gwrgan). A larger pony was soon needed as the children grew older. In 1962, Howard Black, a Welsh breeder and friend, and Mrs. Bedford saw the need for breeding larger Section B Welsh ponies. With this in mind, Mr. Black left for the United Kingdom to look for a suitable stallion. He found *Brockwell Spider, a full 13.2 hands, by Harford Starlight out of Fayre Ladybird, bred by Mrs. Binnie. Howard also purchased two Section B mares Kirby Cane Grig (in foal to Kirby Cane Juggler) and Belvoir Rose Petal (in foal to Wickenden Osprey). These ponies and their produce won in major U.S. and Canadian shows with the help of Tommy Jay, who managed the stud. There were three notable studs producing the larger Section B's at the time --- Farnley, GlanNant and Findeln. Each of these studs imported very influential stallions, *Downland Drummer Boy, *Cusop Sheriff and *Brockwell Spider. Over the years, their progeny spread throughout the U.S. and Canada. The Findeln ponies thrived in pastures at Old Whitewood Farm in Virginia. Mrs. Bedford's careful breeding program with Welsh type in mind, kept her ponies between 13 hands and 14.2 hands. This was helped by the purchase of GlanNant Limerick, bred by the late Molly Butler. Findeln Cinnabar (by Findeln Blue Danube out of Findeln Ruby a daughter of *Brockwell Spider) was the senior herd sire at Findeln in the early 1990's. In 1997 Mrs. Bedford decided to close the Welsh breeding chapter of her life. On Sunday, May 11, 1997 a dispersal sale was held in Leesburg, Virginia. Not long after this sale, we acquired Findeln Emerald, a half-sister to Findeln Cinnabar (both out of Findeln Ruby). It is our goal at Wicklyn Welsh to continue the objectives of not only Findeln Stud, but Farnley and GlanNant, and if possible, to improve upon the quality of Welsh Section B ponies available today. Our broodmare band includes some of the most concentrated blood of these three famous breeding programs. The ponies carrying the blood of *Cusop Sheriff, Findeln Blue Danube, GlanNant Limerick, *Brockwell Spider, Farnley Lustre and continuing through his famous son, Cymraeg Rainbeau dominate the Welsh lines successful in the Pony Hunter rings today. Our focus is to produce quality Section B Welsh ponies who will excell in the competitive Pony Hunter market without losing Welsh type. We feel we have found the perfect stallion to achieve this goal in GlanNant Scarab.
GlanNant Scarab is the son of *Cusop Sheriff out of Findeln Cricket (*Brockwell Spider x Kirby Cane Grig).
His pedigree is truly priceless. At 18 years of age, Scarab is healthy, happy and very fertile!
