Hyuk Joon's grandfather, the patriarch of the respectable and very traditional Kwon household, agreeing to a pre-arranged marriage between his at-the-time 10 year old grandson and the new-born granddaughter of his best friend, Jung Sook's grandfather. However, the family of Jung Sook's grandfather soon runs into debt and in the middle of the night, they quietly leave the Kwon household so as not to bring shame upon them. |
Fast forward 17 years and Jung Sook is all grown up now and studying her final year in high school in preparation for her university-entrance exams. Her grandfather and father have by now passed on and she was brought up in a poor environment by her mum who owns a small laundry shop. However, Jung Sook is chirpy and strong-willed despite her background and definitely very cheeky. She unfortunately does not have much of an interest in her studies and often goes shopping and to discos with her 'gang' of four close friends, known in school collectively as the 'five mirror princesses'.
It is during one of these disco outings that Jung Sook ends up meeting her future husband, Hyuk Joon, although it is not in the best of circumstances. Hyuk Joon, a prosecutor has led his team to the disco to arrest a targeted gang leader but failing to do so, end up arresting underage entrants to the disco instead. Jung Sook, not yet 18, is one of those arrested and the awkward circumstance of their meeting is used to generate a few laughs. At almost the same time, Hyuk Joon's grandfather who has been looking for his long-lost friend over the years, finally locates Jung Sook's family's whereabouts and send Hyuk Joon's uncle to formalise the details of the pre-arranged marriage with Jung Sook's mum.
Upon learning of the marriage, Hyuk Joon and Jung Sook of course are very much opposed to it with Hyuk Joon thinking of Jung Sook as an immature brat while Jung Sook sees Hyuk Joon as an old boring nerd. However, the usual plot developments are thrown in to bring the two together like Jung Sook catching Hyuk Joon in the bath when going to his house to ask him something and more importantly, she learns that Hyuk Joon is her first love (the unknown guy in traditional Korean dress whom she bumped into on the street and fell in love with immediately). Thus Jung Sook begins to actively pursue the marriage to Hyuk Joon's horror, even travelling from Seoul to Andong (a rural area where the Kwon household is located) to earn points with Hyuk Joon's grandfather. Hyuk Joon's grandfather takes an immediate liking to her despite her being from a poor background and not trained in the proper use of Korean traditional etiquette and household duties. Adamant that the marriage goes through, Hyuk Joon finally agrees to the marriage so as not to aggravate his grandfather's ailing health and with the mutual agreement with Jung Sook that their marriage is only to be in name with each other not interfering in the other's personal life.
All this takes place within the first few episodes and there is much more interesting twists and turns as Ga Young, Hyuk Joon's aggressive university ex-girlfriend, is introduced and goes about trying to win back Hyuk Joon with the help of Sun Ah, Hyuk Joon's sister who utterly dislikes Jung Sook and is against the marriage. Other obstacles like Hyuk Joon's and Jung Sook's constant bickering, the problems of living under one roof and the requirement of Jung Sook to meet the expectations of the Kwon family as the 'wife of the heir' also come into play to create some humorous moments and also further the plot. It would be too long to summarise the entire plot here but to put it briefly, in the end true love blossoms between Hyuk Joon and Jung Sook and their show marriage becomes a real one in all meanings of the word.

Kang Hyun-woo had only one overpowering passion: photography. Everything else came a distant second: his role as heir-apparent to the throne of the family's business conglomerate, his wealthy status, and his long-time girlfriend Yoon Soo-jin. His lack of interest in business brought his father, Chairman Kang, problems. When Hyun-woo just up and left Korea and flew to New York to pursue photography courses, Chairman Kang was determined to bring Hyun-woo back to the fold; in the meantime, he trusted the young lawyer Jung Tae-min as his right-hand man, at least while Hyun-woo was away. At last, Hyun-woo came back to Korea at the news of his father's failing health, only to find out it was just a ploy to make him come home. |
 |
Ji Eun-soo was a simple country girl who ran a small bed-and-breakfast called 'Dreaming Forest'? with her sickly father. Her life virtually revolved around running the inn, taking care of her father and having a crush on the young doctor who took care of him.
These two lives collided one fateful night when, after an explosive argument with his father, Hyun-woo stormed off and drove out in the country. Along the way, he picked up a hitchhiker who turned out to be a thief and stabbed him, throwing him over a ravine. Disoriented, Hyun-woo wandered off and barely missed being hit by the car driven by Eun-soo, who just came from a doctor's appointment with her father. Meanwhile, the thief drove away in Hyun-woo's car and got into an accident, the car blowing up in the process.
Soon Hyun-woo's family received news that their son died in the explosion, his personal effects found in the charred and unrecognizable body of the thief.
un-soo and her father brought him to the country hospital and, against Eun-soo's will, stuck around until the patient awoke. When finally he woke up, they realized his injuries were so severe that he completely lost his memory. At her father's insistence, Eun-soo agreed to let the embittered and wary stranger stay with them at the inn while he still had nowhere to go. They gave him the name Jan-ho.
In the year that followed, Jan-ho fully recovered his strength and positive disposition, but not his memory. His relationship with Eun-soo became like that of a brother and sister, until they both realized it was more than kinship that they felt. Under a pine tree, they exchanged lockets where Jan-ho promised that whatever happened, even if his memory would return, he would love Eun-soo forever.
Back home, since Hyun-woo's '˜death', Soo-jin was still pining for him, remembering how he'd promised to marry her the day before he '˜died'. Tae-min now had gained a better accord with Hyun-woo's father, and it appears he had harbored feelings for Soo-jin from the start, even when Hyun-woo was around. In Soo-jin's loneliness, she sought comfort with Tae-min, their closeness suddenly frowned upon by both Soo-jin and Hyun-woo's families.
Now, the Dreaming Forest Inn was the only thing left to Eun-soo and her father, but despite repeated offers from a huge Seoul company to buy the land, they refused. It turned out that the company that was trying to acquire the piece of land was that of Hyun-woo's family. Tae-min, now the General Manager, finally paid a visit to the inn to personally convince the owner to sell and got the shock of his life when he met Jan-ho, the spitting image of Hyun-woo, whom he had envied for so long.
After having Jan-ho investigated, Tae-min finally realized that Jan-ho was none other than Hyun-woo sans his memories. Here Tae-min began to show his true colors for, instead of informing Hyun-woo's family and Soo-jin that Hyun-woo was still alive, he ordered a friend to finish Hyun-woo off.
The day of Jan-ho and Eun-soo's engagement was a day to remember, both for its happiness and the pain that followed soon after. That night, Tae-min's minion carried out the plan and tried to kill Jan-ho. But it backfired, for Jan-ho's memories returned and he went home to his family while Eun-soo waited for him at the inn.
Hyun-woo was back; his family was overjoyed, so was Soo-jin. And Hyun-woo forgot all about Eun-soo, and had no way of remembering about her as Soo-jin had seen his locket, read the message inside, and kept it, not saying a word about it to Hyun-woo.
Despite his confusion as to the year that was lost in his memory, Hyun-woo became the son his father always wanted him to be. He took his rightful seat as General Manager, and Tae-min was demoted, going back to his position as Director. Now that Hyun-woo was back, Soo-jin had no more time for Tae-min, much to the latter's misery. And the engagement was on.
Soon after, Eun-soo's father died, leaving her alone to run the inn with the help of an aunt. After months of trying to look for Jan-ho, Eun-soo finally gave up, thinking he was gone forever. She burned all their letters and photographs, leaving only the locket to remember him by. After much convincing by her aunt, she took a rare trip to Seoul to visit her friend, who worked for Hyun-woo's company.
It was there that Eun-soo saw Hyun-woo, and after finding out about his year-long disappearance, had no doubt that he was her Jan-ho. Their first meeting did not go too well, what with Eun-soo going in hysterics as she called him Jan-ho. Hyun-woo, miffed by this stranger, even had guards restrain her and take her away from him.
Resolved to make Hyun-woo remember her, Eun-soo left the Dreaming Forest to her aunt and moved to Seoul with her friend, applying at the company. At the job interview, Hyun-woo once again got annoyed with her when he found out she had lied about knowing how to speak in Japanese (which was a requirement for the job) and decided not to hire her.
Tae-min met Eun-soo and, amazed at her kindness toward him, pulled strings to have her hired as a sales clerk at the showroom. Hyun-woo was not too pleased to see her at the showroom but did not try to contradict Tae-min's decision to hire her.
Soon Tae-min and Eun-soo became friends, while Hyun-woo did not bother hiding his disgust for Eun-soo, much to Soo-jin's curiosity. All they knew was that Eun-soo was in Seoul because her fiancé, who looked just like Hyun-woo, was long dead. Hyun-woo was not too happy with this information. This impression changed during a company trip where Hyun-woo realized just how kind, helpful and resourceful Eun-soo was. He became nicer to her, and while they talked, Eun-soo told him that her fiancé is not dead; he was very much alive. That night, Eun-soo got drunk and Hyun-woo carried her to his room, where he saw the locket she was wearing. Tenderness began to well within him and they became friends.
Hyun-woo now found himself wanting to protect Eun-soo and, at a party where she worked as a server and was being ridiculed, he grabbed Eun-soo and scolded her for letting other people step on her, even telling her to stop pining for her former fiancé. Hurt by his words, Eun-soo then promised to leave the company to stay away from him. Back at the party, Soo-jin found the locket Eun-soo dropped and found the message inside, exactly like the one she found on Hyun-woo when he came back. She realized that Hyun-woo and Eun-soo loved each other when he lost his memory.
Hyun-woo realized he did not want Eun-soo to leave, and finally confessed his feelings to her. They agreed to be together, and Hyun-woo broke up with Soo-jin, who refused, promising she would never let him go. The following days were happy ones for Hyun-woo and Eun-soo, while Tae-min silently wallowed in his jealousy and Soo-jin desperately found ways and means to break them up.
Tae-min then was revealed to have a vendetta against Hyun-woo's family. He believed Hyun-woo's father stole the company from his own father, driving him to suicide. Now that Eun-soo told him she loved Hyun-woo and looked upon him only as a friend, his vendetta was fully directed at Hyun-woo. He began underhanded measures to grab the company from Hyun-woo's family.
Soo-jin's father, upon finding out about Hyun-woo's breaking his engagement to his daughter, vowed to pull away his investment in the company. Even Hyun-woo's mother tried to pay Eun-soo to stay away from her son, but she refused. Adamantly, Hyun-woo refused to marry Soo-jin only to save the company.
Eun-soo was then faced with a dilemma. If she left Hyun-woo, the company would be saved, and Hyun-woo as well. She broke up with Hyun-woo, telling him she only wanted money and now that Hyun-woo's father gave him money and her own house, she was breaking up with him. But there was no money and no house, and Hyun-woo's father silently admired Eun-soo's love for his son.
What followed next was a series of power-grabbing within the company as both Tae-min and Hyun-woo vied for Eun-soo's heart. Soon after Tae-min became General Manager and began the process of fully destroying the company. However, the plan was foiled when Hyun-woo found out about his plans. His father even told him that he never paid Eun-soo a cent, and the two were reunited.
In a final attempt to fix things, Eun-soo went to talk with Tae-min but, inebriated, Tae-min mistook her for Hyun-woo and ran her down with his car. And no one heard from her again
Now it was Hyun-woo's turn to look and wait for Eun-soo

The story is essentially about the lives of Hyun Woo, Jung Min and Soo In. Hyun Woo and Jung Min, both first year law students, are rivals in class and for the affections of Soo In. Jung Min applies himself more and as such is the favourite of Professor John Keynes. Hyun Woo, who had a hard time adjusting to the workload in the beginning, falls into the bad graces of the professor. However, Hyun Woo perseveres and eventually wins the respect of Professor Keynes and his classmates. Both men meet Soo In and fall for her. This intensifies the rivalry between them.
Lee Soo In is a poor, kind, hardworking medical student at Harvard Medical School. Her ambition is to join OEP, an organization that provides medical care to patients in Third World countries. She is charmed by Hyun Woo's cheerful, persistent, idealistic and kindhearted nature and she falls for him. However, their relationship is short-lived when her application to OEP is accepted. She tells Hyun Woo about it and he tells her grudgingly to go. So, after spending a night with him, she leaves. In the note she leaves behind, she tells him that she isn't cut out for marriage and children. He is devastated. |
Hyun Woo returns to Korea after graduating from Harvard Law School and sets up his own practice. He is still as idealistic and only accepts cases he believes in. He soon gains a reputation for himself. Jung Min stayed in the US after graduation but now returns to Korea to take on a case. Soo In is also back for 2 months in Korea to conduct some research. And predictably they all meet up again.
Soo In is pleased to see Hyun Woo again but he is still angry with her. He is upset she left the way she did and that she didn't try to stay in touch with him. He doubts she ever loved him. Jung Min is disappointed that after so many years apart, Soo In still can't forget Hyun Woo. She still loves Hyun Woo but she doesn't want to resume their relationship as she will be leaving again.
Hyun Woo takes over his late friend's environmental case and finds that the opposing counsel is none other than Jung Min. They face off again. Hyun Woo, unable to let go of Soo In, pursues her again and finally she relents. They spent a happy week together and then it's time for her to leave. Hyun Woo, in contrast to his younger immature self, tells her that he will keep her in his heart, knowing that she loves him. He will wait for her until she returns, but if she doesn't, he will still continue to wait. This is the most touching scene in the drama as each tries to put on a brave face for the other. At the airport, she assures him that she will return and promises that this will be the last time they part.
On her way to her departure gate, Soo In collapses and is taken to the hospital. At the hospital, Hyun Woo is worried but she lies that she faked her illness because she doesn't want to leave him. Hyun Woo reminds her of her promise.
Jung Min is warned by his client, Jason, that anyone who gets in the way of winning his case will be dealt with. Jung Min warns Hyun Woo but he refuses to listen and is run over by a car. He survives with a broken leg. At about this time, Soo In learns that she has leukemia but she keeps it from Hyun Woo. Jung Min accidentally finds out about her illness. He goes to Jason and tells him that he will win the case but Jason must find a cure for Soo In. Jung Min bribes Hyun Woo's star witness in the case to lie that Hyun Woo had bribed him for his testimony. Hyun Woo's case is jeopardized as well as his career and reputation.
Hyun Woo finds out from Jung Min about Soo In's illness. He is hurt she didn't tell him. He proposes to her. She refuses to marry him, assuring him that she will get well on her own. He tells her that he will not forgive her if she leaves him again but she does. When she learns about his troubles, she seeks out the witness to compel him to tell the truth. He eventually does and she confronts Jung Min. Jung Min tells her that he is willing to do anything to save her life. Their conversation is overheard and reported to Jason who sends his henchman to take care of the witness. Hyun Woo, who has been visiting the witness every night to find out the truth, finds the body and becomes the chief murder suspect.
Worried for each other, Soo In and Hyun Woo reunite and promise that they will not part again. Soo In's father is reluctant to agree to their marriage as he wants to spare Hyun Woo the pain of losing Soo In should she die. Soo In assures her father she will get well and her father finally agrees. They also get the tacit approval of Hyun Woo's father who was previously opposed to Soo In. At the wedding ceremony, the witness' 6 year old daughter spots Jason's henchman and identifies him as her father's murderer. Hyun Woo and Jung Min give chase and the henchman is arrested. Jason escapes to the airport but he is apprehended by Hyun Woo. Hyun Woo is late for his wedding but he is confident that Soo In and their guests are still waiting. They are and the couple is finally married.
Soo In collapses later in the night and at the hospital, the doctor tells Hyun Woo that her condition has deteriorated. Her only option is a bone marrow transplant. Hyun Woo receives a double blow when he finds out that Jason has been cleared of all charges. Jason approaches him and tells him that he can help find a cure for Soo In. However, Hyun Woo has to drop the case.
Hyun Woo and Soo In return to their new home and spend a happy day together. In the evening, Hyun Woo sadly tells Soo In that her condition has worsened. Soo In later recounts to Hyun Woo that several years before, she had donated her bone marrow to a little boy whose sister, although a match, was unable to do so, due to her weak health at the time. Hyun Woo urges her to contact the sister, Anna, and ask for her help but Soo In refuses. However, Hyun Woo secretly writes to Anna and she agrees to help.
Soo In discovers that Jason (the defendant) is also her benefactor who had commissioned the research she had conducted. The research was then used by Jason to help his own case. When Soo In realises she had been used, she sets out to help Hyun Woo with his case to redeem herself.
When Jason learns that Soo In will testify against him, he contacts Anna. Anna writes to Hyun Woo and tells him that she has changed her mind. However, she comes to Korea and is met by Jason. Jason later tells Hyun Woo that he has found a donor for Soo In but Hyun Woo must drop the case. The next day, Soo In receives a call telling her that a donor has been found. Whilst Soo In is excited, Hyun Woo is worried. He confronts Jason and is introduced to Anna. He reluctantly tells his associates that he can't continue with the case even though they are on the verge of winning. Soo In catches sight of Anna with Jason and she realizes the truth. She tells Hyun Woo she won't go through with the transplant. Hyun Woo is angry but she is adamant. Finally he relents and the next day tells his associates to continue with the trial. When Jung Min learns the truth, he begs Hyun Woo to reconsider but Hyun Woo stands firm. At the trial, much to Jason's surprise, Soo In doesn't testify. Jung Min stands as witness instead against Jason. Hyun Woo wins the trial and Jason is arrested.
Anna decides to go through with the transplant. During the operation, Jung Min asks Hyun Woo to play a game of basketball with him. It is quite funny to watch Hyun Woo as he is terrible at the game. They talk and Jung Min decides to stay on in Korea. The operation is successful and a happy Hyun Woo reminds Soo In of her promise to have a son who looks like him and a daughter who looks like her. Eventually, they have triplets.

To understand the title and plot of this drama, you need to know the Korean folk tale of Kongji and Patji. It's like the Korean version of Cinderella, where Patji is the evil, ugly, mean sister who no one likes. Kongji is supposedly the super nice one that ends up with the prince at the end. This drama is a parody of that story in which Kongji isn't really all that nice. She's just pretending to be nice to get men and Patji, although a bit mischievious and rude, really is a nice girl inside. |
The story starts with Song-yi (Patji) and Hee-won (Kongji) in elementary school. Song-yi likes a certain boy who's quite popular with all the girls. Hee-won says she herself is not interested in him because Song-yi likes him. When the teacher says to pick your favorite guy to sit with, Song-yi boldly grabs the boy's hand. Then Hee-won goes up to the same guy and tells him to sit with her! The boy rips his hand from Song-yi and grabs Hee-won's. Song-yi, furious over the fact that Hee-won stole her guy, throws her shoe at her and beats her up! It's years later and nothing's changed. Hee-won is still the nice one that all the guys like. Song-yi is still the loud, obnoxious girl who no one likes. Throw in a rich, good-looking guy that thinks Song-yi is an angel for saving his life and the reappearance of Mr. Elementary School guy and you get a very entertaining series

All Young-mi can remember is up to the time she was 6 years old. The reason for this is that her mother left home when she was 6. She only remembers the good times in her childhood up to 6 years old and everything else is blocked out. Young-mi is happy where she is and doesn't want to leave the abbey.
On the eve that Sun-mi is to leave for London, Hyung-chul finally tells her not to go and to marry him. She is happy because that was what she really wanted. They embrace and kiss in the middle of the street in traffic. |
