TRAINING
Training
The training of the SafeZones members is intended to help them be better prepared to handle LGBT issues. It is handled by a professional trainer, Skylar Fein, who has been working with faculty and students with SafeZones programs at Cabrini College and St. Joseph’s University. The training will be adapted from the models used at these schools with a particular emphasis on tailoring it to the needs of Widener University. The following is an outline of the training technique:
Voicing Concerns:
- Concerns about LGBT issues on campus are discussed. Also, the concerns of the faculty and students about being involved in the program are addressed.
Clearing Misconceptions:
- Misconceptions about LGBT people are discussed briefly to clear any stereotypes and also to get trainees more comfortable with talking about these issues.
- Examples of such training are the discussion of language usage: homosexual to gay man or lesbian woman, sexual preference to sexual orientation.
Roleplaying:
- Different SafeZones scenarios are presented with input and suggestions from trainees. The situations are attempted to be resolved the “SafeZones way”.
