When we were in Mrs. Tumlin's 3rd grade class at
College Street School, my Dad came within a whisker of dying from a gastric
ulcer bursting on the outside of his stomach. 3 out of 4 died with this at
the time, but it is a thing of little concern these days.
Gangrene usually set in, which it did with Dad, and
after operations in those days they made you lie on your back for days and one's
insides grew together (called "adhesions"). The get you up quick these
days and that doesn't happen. Anyway they are painful and cause many other
problems and so a few month's later another operation had to be done to cut the
adhesions away.
Just after Daddy got to come home from the first
operation Mrs. Tumlin (bless her heart) had the class all write Daddy a get-well
note. Above is yours to him:
Just another reason you will always be my
friend.
