BACKGROUND
An early map of Salina shows a large auto racing oval once existed in what is now Kenwood Park. Indeed, the perimeter road at the east end of the park still reflects the steady-state 180-degree curve of the track. But that was decades ago. Post-war, Salina-area oval racers had to tow to more distant locales for their sport. Until, in the late 1960s, Don Wilson ramrodded a project to build a track on land owned by Wally Nichols west of Salina. A 3/8-mile, heavy clay, high-banked track was dug out of the gently rolling Smoky Hills. For the decade of the '70s it was a popular destination for racers in central Kansas. Some years Nichols ran it, some he leased it to other operators. In the early '80s, about the time of the OPEC oil crisis, no one stepped forward to run it and it sat silent for a few years. To the rescue came Don Brown, who reopened the track in late 1986. Except for 1991-1992, when Earl Kinderknecht and Danny Huehl ran it under Salina County Speedway, Brown ran it until 1996 when Chuck Fairchild took over the lease on the Nichols property. The track runs from April to early October, with the green flag flying at 7:30 every Saturday night. Regular fare at the track comprises Mini Stocks for 4-cylinder cars, IMCA Hobby Stocks which allow the entry level racer to race without the expensive costs and has been the most improved division within the last couple of years, Super Stocks which are more of a professional division allowing for racing modifications, B Modifieds that give the new Modified driver experience before they move up, and the ever popular IMCA Modifieds. In addition to the regular programs, the track plans to have dwarf cars on occasion, along with Special Shows around Memorial Day and Labor Day. The Topless Outlaw Racing Association will make their return for 4 shows this summer, as well as 2 shows for the National Championship Racing Association Sprint Cars. |
