Frequently asked questions

I am a complete beginner and know absolutely nothing about guitars or music.
Don't worry. All the world's great guitar players were the same once! I welcome comlete novices, and you will be surprised how quickly you can learn.

I would like to learn, but don't have a guitar.
That's ok. Come and meet with me, try an instrument out here, and see if learning the guitar is for you. I can help you choose a guitar if you wish.

Do I have to learn to read music?
Absolutely not! There is no need to read music at all. The guitar is usually taught with chord symbols and 'tabs', which are very simple box diagrams showing you where to put your fingers. It really is very straightforward and easy.

How long before I am any good?
Everyone learns at their own pace, but you will be pleasantly surprised how quickly you are able to play a few songs well.

I already play quite well, and just want extra help with improvising.
OK. No problem. Come and meet with me and we can decide together what I can help you with.

How often do I have to have lessons?
Up to you of course, as you are the customer. But, especially if you are a beginner, weekly is good at first. Then we can decide on a schedule that suits you. I am very flexible, and don't teach to a strict timetable or pattern. If you are more experienced you might just want to come a few times to brush up on something. Or even just once. That's ok with me.

I have tried to learn before and it didn't work out. I seemed to get stuck and lost interest.
Many people try to learn the guitar and give up. Maybe you didn't have the right instrument, the right teacher, or no teacher at all, and maybe your other commitments got in the way. If you have read this far you clearly have enough interest in thinking about learning. Come and meet with me, and see how you feel. I will try to instil some enthusiasm from the word go.

How many lessons do I have to have?
Come for as long or as little as you wish. I do not insist on a set of lessons or advance payments at all. You decide what you need and when you want to learn. Some people prefer to have a course of 5 or 6 lessons, some more, some less.

I only want to play fingerstyle/ plectrum style/ heavy rock/ folk/ blues/ jazz etc etc. I don't want to learn anything else.
Fine. No problem. We can do that.

What's parking like where you are?
Very easy in the daytime. Evenings can be crowded, but if you come regularly I can provide off road parking.

Can you teach evenings and weekends? I am very busy at work/ school/ college.
Yes. No problem. However if you can come weekday mornings I offer a discount.

I feel I might be too old.
No way! Many people take up an instrument in thier retirement and do well with it. My experience is that you are likely to have much more patience and staying power in later years, which more than compensates for any slighly slower learning. I welcome older people. So many have tried the guitar when younger and would like to get back into it.
