IHS class of '76 has a blast from the past
This past weekend, the Irondequoit High School class of
1976 celebrated its 30-year reunion.
In three words, "What a blast!," said class member Jim
Ford.
To kick off the weekend, classmates gathered Friday
evening on the steps of the House of Guitars for a group
photo.
Why HOG?
"Irondequoit High School has the honor of being the
only high school in the U.S. that's within walking distance
of the most famous guitar store known the world over,
and to which every successful rock star makes his pilgrimage
at least once in a lifetime," Ford said. "We (in the class of
'76) were blessed to hang out there as kids."
They also hung out at Cooper Deli nearby, Ford said, "but
it wasn't large enough to hold us." The deli, he added, "is
another great hangout, but lesser known internationally."
The classmates, who traveled for the event from Colorado,
North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Texas, Canada, Long Island,
Penfield and Irondequoit, followed their group shot with another trip
down memory lane: A stop at Summerville's O'Loughlin's
Bar & Grill "for a night of hugs, laughs, smiles, and
catching up," Ford said.
Saturday's activities included 18 holes of golf "at two of
Irondequoit's most challenging golf courses," Reed said.
Those would be the public course at Durand Eastman
Park and Parkside Pines Miniature Golf at 4383 Culver
Road.
Saturday evening, a total of 122, out of a class of 444,
shared a casual evening of dinner and dancing at Jack's
Place, the restaurant in the clubhouse at Durand Eastman
Park.
On Sunday, they enjoyed a tour of what Ford called "the
new and improved Irondequoit High School," followed
by a picnic at Charlotte beach.
"It was a wonderful weekend," Ford concluded. "We
are already making plans to gather for celebrating (or
commiserating) our 50th birthdays in 2008."
