Carlos was driving a private teamīs Lancia Integrale. The season started in Monte Carlo. By this time the Lancia Integrale was already out-of-date and it was impossible to challenge new Tyotas and Fords. In Monte Carlo Sainz lost a lot of time when he went off the road. He finished 14th. Carlos retired in Portugal, but in Corcica Carlos was fourth. Lancia was working very well in rough conditions and Carlos finished second in Acropolis. Sainz finished fourth, but Carlos retired in Australia. In San Remo, Carlos was second, but retired in Catalonya.
