Joseph J. Pedraza, 92, passed away January 27, 2006 at Retama Manor North Nursing Home. He was born on August 19, 1913 in San Antonio TX. When Joe was 11 years old, his father, Joseph J. Pedraza, was the first San Antonio Police officer to be killed in the line of duty. Joe then supported his mother and 4 sisters and brother until they left home. Joe was preceded in death by his mother-Grace Pedraza, sister-Dolores Casey, and brother Robert Pedraza, as well as numerous other relatives. Joe played for one of San Antonio's first semi-pro baseball teams. He then proudly served his country in the Army during World War II. Joe was a well-respected food broker for over 60 years. He was last employed by Luke Soules. He continued to work part-time until the age of 87. Prior to that he brokered with C.H. Ketchum & Co, Kirkwood & Co, and Saldania Garza. He was known around the country as the 'Bean Man', and handled the bean accounts for major stores and restaurants. He was involved with St. Gerard's Catholic Church for over 48 years, where he faithfully served as usher, and worked the Country Store Booth and supplied bags of groceries to be donated for the yearly Church Festival. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Pedraza. He is also survived by sons Joseph E. (Jody) Pedraza and wife of Boerne, TX, and Michael A. (Mykal) Pedraza and partner Richard Koonce of Houston TX. Joe leaves behind sisters Irene Fletcher, Annie Price, and Grace Huslage, three grandchildren-Chance, Monique and Casey, brother and sister-in-laws, and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives. Viewing will be Tuesday, January 31, 2006, 4:00 p.m. at Alamo Funeral Home, 624 N. Alamo, followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will take place Wednesday, February 1 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Gerard's Catholic Church; 1523 Iowa St. Internment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Following Internment, a gathering of friends and family will take place at St. Gerard's Elementary School cafeteria. Pall Bearers will be Mark 'Spyder' Shore, Keith Melton, Craig Brooks, Kenneth 'Ken' Dugosh, George De Leon, and Lance Cortinas. The family would like to thank the Hospice nurses at Retama Manor North for treating Joe like their own father, with dignity and respect. Thanks also go to Mary Dover Henry and Rosana Granato for spending time with Joe in his last hours, along with son Mykal and partner Richard. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Gerard's Church, 1523 Iowa St, San Antonio, TX 78203.
