Levi Strauss was a 20-year-old Bavarian immigrant. He left New York for the California gold rush in San Francisco. Shortly after Mr. Strauss's arrival, a prospector wanted to know what Mr. Strauss was selling. Strauss told him he had rough canvas to use for tents and wagon covers. Since the prospector couldn't find a pair of pants strong enough to last, the prospector said, "You should have brought pants!"
Strauss later made pants out of the canvas. Miners liked the pants, but complained that they tend to chafe. Strauss substituted a twilled cotton cloth from France called " Serge de Nimes," which became known as denim.
More Facts:
*Levi Strauss & Co. began using the pocket stitch design in 1873.
*The two-horse brand design was first used in 1886.
*In 1936 the red tab attach to the left rear pocket, for identifying Levi's jeans at a distance.
