Artist's Statement
I began this year by photographing architectural forms and examining positive and negative spaces. The glasshouses at the Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens provided a source of inspiration, as was scaffolding, cranes and the railings and ironwork of Georgian townhouses in Stockbridge. I also looked at the framework of the old, collapsing pier in Brighton for ideas.
My inspiration came from concepts such as layering, graphic images and vintage lace fabrics. This developed into looking at different ways of constructing open, lace-like fabrics.

I have constructed yarns from new and vintage fabrics or knitted my own yarns. These I then knitted into fabrics through hand-knitting, which is a new skill I have recently developed. I have also experimented with different yarn qualities and used felted lambswool, cutwork/perforation, embroidery and needle-punching to achieve different effects. I used different stitches to achieve various textures and patterns or positive and negative space in the fabrics.

My final degree collection in June 2005 consisted of fabric samples and three-dimensional, sculptural scarves which are aimed at young-at-heart women who wish to make an individual statement with beautiful and quirky accessories.
