Prince Jonathan glared at his father, and marched out of the room, his sapphire eyes angry. How could this happen? His mother and father had always been pretty reluctant to force him into a marriage of state, but something, or someone, seemed to have dramatically changed their minds. He knew that he had to marry, and produce an heir, but he didn’t want to marry some stupid Gallan princess! And why did he have to travel and meet her… why didn’t she come to him, as was traditional? It all seemed sudden and badly organised, and Jon didn’t like it one bit. Suddenly, he heard voices from inside a room, voices he recognized. “Now all we have to do is to sneak into his room.” said a female voice. “Oh, and that’s going to be a walkover, isn’t it?” replied a male one, dripping sarcasm. “Shut up! It can’t be that hard… George and Keth said I should sneak it while he’s in the banquet hall for Jonathan’s leaving feast. The whole court will be together then, and I’ll have plenty of time to search his chambers.” “If you get caught…” “I’m not going to get caught. Please Thom, you’re not making this any easier.” “I’m just pointing out that this plan is more likely going to fail than work, and we’ll all end up in disgrace.” “Who cares? I can explain what I’m doing, and even if they don’t believe me, I’ll have planted the seeds of doubt… no one’ll ever properly trust him again.” There was a loud snort, but the lady saw fit to ignore it. “Hopefully, we’ll find some evidence in Roger’s rooms that no-one can ignore- we’ll show him for what he is.” “Shh! Do you have any idea how loud you’re talking? The whole palace will hear at this rate!” Jonathan decided it was time to make an entrance into this suspicious-sounding conversation. He opened the door, and met two pairs of shocked purple eyes. “This all sounds very serious. What’s going on?” ---- |
