Route 60 Short-Story Journals March 6, 2004 First Day Oceanside to Pauma Valley -- The first day out can be a calamity. David Lamb started his trip from Alexandria, Virginia, to California on the Mount Vernon bike trail and “couldn’t make it five miles from home without crashing.” He did finish to write a book, Over the Hills, about his “midlife escape across America by bicycle.” Mark Boyd started a 4000-mile journey east and crashed after 66 miles, breaking his collarbone. He also finished and authored a web site (link below). Having read these reports, I planned a short and safe ride to get the first day behind me. I hung around ‘til checkout time, soaking in a last shower and more of the Oceanside ambiance. Then rode east on Highway 76, keeping in my best traffic-riding mentality and using my fat tires to ride safely on the shoulder or sidewalk when necessary. Planning this trip, I used Yahoo’s yellow pages to find campgrounds, motels, etc. Yahoo’s campground@ search had pointed me to the La Jolla Band Of Indians in Pauma Valley, just 23 miles from my start (I said I wanted an easy first day). The listing didn’t say Campground, only Band Of Indians, but being about 1/512th kin to Pocahontas, I decided to chance that they would welcome me. |
