Chicago to Oceanside — Three-day, two-night cruse—$85.50. How much would you pay? Most people don’t have the time and the rest don’t like the adventure—sleeping in a seat, bathing in a lavatory (sleeping cars are very expensive), mingling with strangers. One view from the observation car of the Southwest Chief amends any inconvenience of no-sleeping-accommodation long-distance train travel.
Not far out of Chicago, America’s heartland farms roll by one by one. Each appearing anxious to tell a story of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In the farmhouses, lights come on in the kitchen and finally go out in the bedroom. Good night all.
I awaken at dawn and find the train pulling out of Dodge City. The scenic day that follows is all that Amtrak advertises and more:

Amtrak's Southwest Chief will leave you with a life time of memories of the spectacular beauty and unique flair of the Southwest…the dazzling landscapes of Arizona and New Mexico that will leave you absolutely astonished. You'll see pueblos hundreds of years old. Fantastic lava flows and geological formations. Breathtaking canyons - some just a few feet wider than your train. Distant views of towering mountains, burning red in the southwestern sunlight.
