The History of Route 60      1926-2001
Cars on Franklin Street, Richmond, Virginia, about the time federal highways were born.
Springerville, AZ
"The town of Springerville holds a special niche in the history of transcontinental travel. It is on US Highway 60, which was a portion of the first ocean-to-ocean route to be established in the US."
Route 60, unlike the defunct Route 66, is alive and well.
Many towns and states along Route 60 are proud of their living heritage, as seen on the following web sites:
Midland Trail, WV
"Cutting across central southern West Virginia, the Midland Trail, U.S. Route 60, is one of the oldest routes in the United States. Its designation by the State of West Virginia as a Scenic Highway recognizes its integral role in the history and development of our nation."
In 1926 a federal highway from Chicago to Los Angeles was proposed to be US 60.  However, several states argued that even-decade routes should be coast-to-coast roads. They won out and US 60 became and is a major transcontinental highway, Virginia Beach to Los Angeles.  The lesser Chicago to Los Angeles route was relegated the number 66. In 1985 Route 66 was officially decommissioned.

California
US-60 in California has been surmonted by I-10 and SR-60.
California's just a great-big freeway.
In all other states the route remains.
