Route 60 Memorial Ride Journals Friday, October 12, 2001 Super Two Tipton Ford to Springfield — The rain passed with one more drenching of my tent, so packed wet. The morning then cleared to a glorious day out here in the park-like setting behind Denis's place. He made some oatmeal and we sipped tea he brought back from New Zeland when he biked the length of both islands. Talked touring on and on and he loaded me down with tips and some simple items like a rain cover for my helmet and disposable gloves for repair work, etc. The best thing he insisted I do is get some GORE-TEX oversocks. The highways in OK and MO have been mostly wonderful for bicycling. Routes 66 and 60 are about 80% upgraded to what they call a "super two" -- two lane highways with a full-lane paved shoulder. I camped out in the Springfield Days Inn, dried my tent and did laundry, and visited across the street the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World. More on that place when I have time. Anyway, got those socks there for only $40 but for the first time in four days my feet are toasty (still raining). The weather fool predicts clearing by tomorrow afternoon with a wayward wind, so maybe I can make up some lost time -- not on a schedule though, I keep reminding myself. |
