The kite is designed to lift in a light wind and carry a range of devices that will help in the detection of a survivor at sea.

Inventions and Copyright
If someone writes a book or composes a song, it has only to be published to get an automatic copyright protection. It is easier to write something in text than it is to buy the parts then build and test an invention. I do it here. :-)
 
The current laws in most countries concerning inventions require the inventor to apply for a patent, that can, when granted, give the inventor the right to sue anyone who copies the invention. This is a very costly process. Firstly, a patent agent has to be employed. The agent will try to ensure that the patent applied for is described in such a manner that it is very difficult or even impossible for someone to infringe the patent. Then, when the patent has been granted and paid for (In all the countries where the inventor wants protection) the inventors worries begin. The expensive "protection" offered by the patent lasts only for ten years in most countries. (Compare this to a "free" copyright worldwide that lasts for 50 years after the author's death.) The patent offices of the world make details of all valid patents accessible to anyone who wants to study them. All the work done by the inventor can then be used for someone to try to find a way to produce something that does the same job as the original invention. If a big company decides that it wants to use the invention, or a derivative of it, the company just goes ahead with the project if it thinks that the inventor cannot afford to defend the patent in law. If an inventor succeeds in defending his patent, as in the case Dyson versus Hoover, it makes headline news.
 
There is a clause in British patent law that says that a patent cannot be granted if information related to its novelty has already been published. I therefore describe and publish my inventions in these pages to make them public knowledge. In this way nobody can get a patent on the inventions that I have invented. I know that there is no way that I can earn any money from my inventions because I cannot afford the costs involved to get and pay for the legal fees needed. I cannot win by publishing my inventions here but I cannot lose either. However, I think that the principles I describe could help somebody somewhere at sometime in the future. That is enough reward in itself.

More Inventions
I am in the process of developing a device to assist blind people in assessing the colours of objects and ambient light. When the prototype has been tested, it will be described here in these pages.
Many years ago I worked out the ideas for flat screen television and three dimensional television. In those days it was impossible to organise the transistors on the inside of a screen's surface to control the colour and brightness of the pixels needed. Since then electronics has developed to such a degree that my original ideas have now beome practical. The flat screens used with computers nowadays use different principles to those I worked on but the result has been the same. However, nobody has yet produced a three dimensional screen that would work like the one I invented. (I was inpired by the picture of such a screen in an old copy of the Eagle comic in the Dan Dare strip drawn by Frank Hampson.)
The pictures drawn by Frank Hampson showed a spherical display that could be viewed from any angle like a giant crystal ball. My first three dimensional display was designed to be hemispherical. One version would give the depth and reality of a theatre stage and the other would be a view from above. This latter version could be used to display sports matches or medical operations. Another sort of flat screen display is suited to very large screens. This will also be described fairly soon.
