BD-1 Bombardment Destroid
Created By: Anthony Orchard

Background:
The Bombardment Destroid series came about due to the REF not knowing what to expect when they arrived on Tirol.  Since the SDF-3 was going by herself, without much in the way of other large-weapon combat ships, a design was drawn up for a mobile cannon based on a mecha platform that could be moved anywhere in space or on a planet's surface quickly and efficiently.  As the project was only experimental, it was given to a junior engineer on Doctor Lang's team, Doctor McCoffney.  The first model, the BD-X, was completed a little over one year before the SDF-3 departed terran skies.  Essentially, they designed the cannon, a more powerful variant of the VHT's main gun, and built the mecha around it.  The winged flight system was found to be somewhat fragile during testing, so the REF ordered ten production units, BD-1's, for evaluation purposes, 6 of them without the winged flight system.  The new destroid worked flawlessly but it's walking battleship impression proved to be too much for a "diplomatic mission," so no more units were ordered for the expedition, however, the ten units they did order went with the SDF-3 when they left earthspace.

After the initial engagement with the Invid, and the loss of two BD-1's to the sheer number of inorganics, they were no longer used for combat during the Tirolian campain.  The remaining eight were of great use during the construction of the Mars and Jupiter fleets.  Two BD-1's were sent back to earth with the first wave and were landed at point K, however, the other six were destroyed in orbit during the attack on reflex point.  It is not known whether the Army of the Southern Cross ordered any units, however, the factory was converted to Logan production soon after the SDF-3 left earthspace.

POWER PLANT:Two Pratt and Whitney/Rolls Royce PR7500 Nuclear Thrust Reactors.  The BD-1's sheer size made it more economical to use nuclear reactors than protoculture cells or generators to power the mecha.  There is a protoculture generator, simaler to that of the VF series variable fighter to power protoculture weapons and systems.
SCRAMJET ENGINES: On the winged versions there are four Thames Industries forced gas thrusters.  These operate much like a scramjet, requiring a minimum speed of 600 mph to begin operation.  Note: These are air breathing devices, so they will not operate in space.
WEAPON SYSTEMS:
MAIN GUN: Integrated with the BD-1, uses the mech's own power system to fire one sustained burst.  Gross aiming is done by the pilot, who must orient the entire mecha to aim.  A magnetic bottling system allows fine tune adjustments up to 5.5 degrees in any direction.  At Tirol, robotech development used the main gun of the BD-1 as a test platform for disruptor technology.  It is unknown how many of the units were converted to this variation.  As a firing platform, the mech's arms pivot back and support the mech on its back while it's knees are bent.  Pilots call this "crab-walking," because it resembles the childhood game from earth.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR THE VF-11:
  • COMBAT COMPUTER W/HUD DISPLAYS: The BD-1 is equipped with a combat computer that can store and analyze data during combat with hostile forces. The entire cockpit canopy of the BD-1 is a large HUD display, which allows the computer to display large amounts of data to the pilot and even highlight enemies and missile attacks with overlaid graphics. The combat computer tracks and identifies specific enemy targets, and has a database of over 10,000 images stored in memory. The computer can identify and track up to 250 targets simultaneously.  The cockpit module has five large multipurpose screens, configurable from any station.  Any or all of these screens can be used as a "threat board" by the combat computer.
  • ESCAPE POD: The entire reinforced cockpit of the BD-1 is a detachable escape pod that can be jettisoned when the mecha is destroyed. The ejected cockpit does contain limited thrusters, which are designed to pick up the cockpit module and move it out of harms way should the BD-1 explode.  Maximum range on an earthlike planet is one mile.  It also contains a powerful locator beacon and an integrated life support system that can support the pilots for up to 34 hours after ejection. The pod is also equipped with parachutes in case of ejection in an atmosphere. The combat computer is programmed to automatically eject the escape pod if the mecha is destroyed (main body MDC reduced to 0), but this can be overridden if the pilot is feeling suicidal for some reason.  Cyclone storage areas are in the cockpit unit, so they will be ejected as well.
  • EXTERNAL AUDIO PICKUP: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound amplification system that can pick up normal conversation up to 300 feet away.
  • HEAT AND RADIATION SHIELDS: Special shielding prevents the penetration of life threatening heat and radiation. A radiation detection and alarm system are linked with the shields and will sound an alarm if there is a rupture in the shields and what the levels of radiation are.
  • LASER TARGETING SYSTEM: Range: 100 miles (160 km). Used for increased accuracy in the striking of enemy targets and is partly responsible for the mecha's strike bonus.
  • LOUDSPEAKER: A loudspeaker system is built into the craft, which can be used to amplify the pilot's voice up to 90 decibels.
  • OPTICS: INFRARED: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). This optical system projects a beam of infrared light that is invisible to the normal eye, but detectable by the mecha's sensors. The system allows the pilot to detect hidden/concealed objects by their IR reflectiveness. The beam will be visible to anyone with IR sensitive optics, however.
  • OPTICS: NIGHTVISION: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive light image intensifier that emits no light of its own, but relies on ambient light which is electronically amplified to produce a visible picture.
  • OPTICS: THERMAL IMAGER: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive optical heat sensor that detects infrared radiation projected by warm objects and converts that data into a false-color visible image. The system enables the pilot to see in the dark, in shadows, and through smoke, and also adds a +10% bonus to pilots using a tracking skill.
  • OPTICS: VISUAL AMPLIFICATION: Max amplification 500X.  Adds +10% to anyone using a tracking or detect concealment skill.
  • RADAR: 400 mile (321 km) range.
  • RADIO/VIDEO COMMUNICATION: Long range, directional communications system with satellite relay capabilities. Range: 600 miles (960 km) or can be boosted indefinitely via satellite relay.
  • SELF-DESTRUCT: To prevent capture of a variable fighter by the enemy, the pilot can activate the BD-1's self-destruct system, which will cause the mecha to explode after a delay of up to 60 minutes (time is set by the pilot). The explosive damage is contained within a 40 foot (11. 6 m) area and inflicts 2D6x10 M.D. to everything within the radius of the explosion. All internal systems are obliterated. The escape pod will be automatically ejected prior to the explosion unless the pilot overrides the ejection sequence.
  • STANDARD SURVIVAL KIT: All mecha come equipped with a 2 portable survival kits. Inside the small reinforced box is a medium-sized flashlight, two hand flares, one rocket flare, a compass, infrared distancing binoculars, a small mirror, a pocket knife, dehydrated and concentrated food (can be stretched into a five day supply for one person) and basic first aid items (aspirin, bandages, disinfectants, etc.)
  • TACTICAL LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM: The BD-1's cockpit is pressurized, and also provides additional air feeds to the pilot and crew's flight suits, thus providing them with pressurized breathing. The flight suit also contains an upper and lower g-suit that promotes blood circulation even during high-g turns, thus decreasing the possibility of pilot's blacking out in combat.
