"...It is a valuable addition to Singapore's -- not
Chinese, Malay, Indian or Eurasian - history. It has become fashionable these
days for the majority of the 180 members of the United Nations to embrace the
suicidal religion of Ethnicity. That is why I still persist in calling myself an
"unhypenated Singaporean..."

"... I would like to congratulate you on the detailed research
on the history of the Malay States and Singapore. I have only read the first
few chapters but I find it well written and easy reading..."

"... It seems a very fascinating account of the formation
of Singapore...It seems to me that you share some of my views...thank you again
for writing what appears to me a most valuable and informative book. Has anyone
thought of translating it in Chinese or in Malay?..."

"...I have read through your book and have found it to be
not only accurate but an excellent historical record of post WWII developments
in Singapore. I found the events leading up to the withdrawal of Singapore from
Malaysia well documented...Thomas Siddon's story is rather a harrowing one if
only because of his turbulent adolescent years. I only hope that it is not all
true. I can't believe that his story is peculiar only to his Eurasian roots. It
can happen to anyone who finds himself in similar circumstances. Despite
Siddon'e misgivings and perceptions about the Chinese-ness of Singapore, I
wonder whether his cultural ties with Singapore can ever be severed...I think I
can recognise one or two characters in your book. The American woman - as
described by you - seem true to form...her kaledoscopic character, you have
painted with a broad and accurate brush....Once again thank you for sending me
the book which I enjoyed enormously. Much research and time has been spent on
it. Congratulations..."
