Naomi  & Willard’s Love Story

(Now, how did this love story begin?  Well, come with me.  Let’s go back in time to the mid 1940’s.)

There was a young girl named Naomi, who lived with her family in the Smith Hollow of the Difficult community.  She was an 8th grade student at Difficult School.  She walked 1 ½ miles each day to and from school except in bad weather when her father would take her and pick her up in a horse and buggy.  She loved school and played on the basketball team.

Now, further down the road in Defeated is Ash Hopper Hollow. That’s where Willard lived with his family.  Willard attended Elbow School, where he was also in the 8th grade.  He played bass drum in the Elbow School band.

Willard had an aunt and uncle that came to visit pretty often, Aunt Lorelle and Uncle Herschel.  (Back then people visited more than they do now.)

(Well, guess what?)  Aunt Lorelle and Uncle Herschel were neighbors to Naomi’s family.   Being with the Willard's family, Aunt Lorelle grew to like Willard, and saw him as a perfect match for Naomi.  So, she would tell Naomi all kinds of things about Willard.

In 1944, the Elbow School and Difficult School had a joint graduation ceremony for their 8th grade students.  That was the first time Naomi saw Willard, and she liked what she saw.  It was definitely love at first sight for her.  With everything Aunt Lorelle had told her, she felt like she already knew him.

After 8th grade graduation, Willard went on to high school.  Naomi’s mother was in bad health, and she needed Naomi to stay home to help with work around the house.  Naomi enjoyed school, and she would have loved to have gone to high school.

For her 19th birthday, Naomi’s mother let her have a birthday party.  Naomi had a good friend that had her eyes on Willard.  She asked Naomi to invite Willard to her party, so it would give her a chance to meet him.  However, when he got to the party, Willard spent the entire time talking to Naomi. (Oh, Mother, how sneaky!!)

Willard and Naomi started dating.  Willard would go to Naomi’s house and spend their whole date playing Dominoes with Naomi’s mother.  Naomi and her father sat and watched.  (Mother said it was so boring, but I guess Daddy knew he better stay in good with Mama Climer.)

One night Naomi’s mother caught her and Willard kissing.  She took the flyswatter and ran Willard off.  (That was Mother’s story.  Daddy said Mama Climer ran him off and took the flyswatter to Mama.  Either way, it’s a funny story.)

Naomi and Willard dated for 5 years, dating steady for the last two years before getting married on December 26, 1952.

And, they have lived happily ever after. . .
