the Years
Bordens Cheese Plant opened in Carthage on July 1, 1945. The family picked up milk around the community and hauled it to the cheese plant. Later Willard took over the route, running it until around 1953. | |
1953 1962: In addition to hauling milk, Willard brought hay, corn, etc. and resold it to farmers that needed it. |
1962 1966: Willard and Naomi purchased a mobile feed mill and started going around to farms in the Smith County area. He ran rain or shine, sleet or snow, over bridges and through some bridges. |

May 18, 1964: Willard purchased Farmers Milling Co. from Mr.Bill Richardson. 1966 1972: Willard furnished 4 chicken houses in Smith County and sold eggs. It was a life long dream of Willard to be a tractor-trailer driver. In 1974, he went to Ryder Training School, which consisted of a correspondence course and then 8 weeks of driver training in Atlanta, GA. He would work a full week and then on Friday night, drive to Atlanta.

August 27, 1974: Willard started to work full time for Thurston Motor Lines in Nashville. He worked there until it closed in December, 1989 with a total of 15 years of safe driving. While he worked at Thurston, he sold interest in the feed mill for 2 years to Michael, nephew, and leased it for 7 years to his brother, Lavon. Edward, took over management in 1984. |

1954-1960: Naomi worked at Carthage Shirt Corporation before deciding to start working full time in the family business. 1977 - 1980: Naomi and daughter, Teresa, ran a fabric store in Carthage. |
