Willem was educated at the Amsterdam Arts and Crafts School. 17 apr 1913 Willem left for Sumatra (Indonesia) where he worked on a plantation His second trip to Indonesia in 1919 brought him to Bali where he met Roland Strasser. Roland Strasser, an Austrian painter, became a good friend of Dooijewaard with whom he shared a style so similar that only a trained eye can discern the difference. The two men spent over a year travelling through China, Mongolia, Japan and North Africa. Willem was a typical artist/traveller who immersed himself in the local cultures and who reached his highest artistic level when inspired by these different cultures. Most of his art was paited during his travels. In 1926 Willem walked (!) from Darjeeling (India) across the Himalaya to Tibet. In 1929 Willem married Jacoba Reinders.
His modern figurative paintings of dancers are notable for their strong lines and exotic subjects. He was unwilling to sweeten the power of his vision. Parents: Christina, 19 aug 1851 Amsterdam Aalt Dooijewaard, 20 aug 1848 Harderwijk
