OLD HAVANA (CUBA) AND ITS FORTIFICATIONS (1982) Founded in 1519 by the Spanish, Havana had become, by the 17th century a prime center for naval construction in the Caribbean. Although it is today a sprawling metropolis of two million inhabitants, its old center retains an interesting mix of baroque and neo-classical monuments, and a homogenous ensemble of civilian houses with arcades, balconies, wrought-iron gates and interior courtyards. link to: www.unesco.org/whc/nwhc/pages/doc/mainf3.htm (source: UNESCO - World Heritage Review nr. 5 - 1997) |

Trinidad and the Valley de Los Ingenios (1988) Founded in 1514, the Cuban town of Santisima Trinidad prospered in the 18th and 19th centuries because of the sugar industry, which left behind the industrial heritage of the Valley of Los Ingenios. The town itself contains a number of 19th-century monuments and typical examples of local architecture. link to: www.unesco.org/whc/nwhc/pages/doc/mainf3.htm (source: UNESCO - World Heritage desk diary - 1995) |
