13. Group of Monuments, Pietermaai-Smal

Ownership. private

Ensemble of monumental houses on both sides of the historical artial road to the east, directly adjacent the Caribbean Sea.  Small inner yards between a "front"house and a "back"house with narrow alleys characterize the urban lay-out, connecting the north to the sea (perpendicular on the main road) and make the inner yards accesible. Predominantly second half Nineteenth Century.

In the 1880's a hurricane destroyed most of Pietrmaai premises. Therefore with some exception most houses dat from 1890 on.  However, the urban structure of front- and backhouses which is considered unique Dutch, is kept intact. The Area needs urgent restoration.
