BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Creators:
Konami
Genre: Bemani (music game)
Platform(s): Playstation/Arcade/Gameboy
Very popular in arcades. Probably Konami's most well known Bemani game, and I can see why. In this game, you use your feet to press the four arrow buttons below your feet. Here's a diagram of the platform below:
And just like in Beatmania you have a score bar, but unlike Beatmania, as long as you don't have an empty bar at the end of the song, you pass =) But that doesn't make DDR any easier than Beatmania. Anyhow, there is a "how to play" sequence in DDR, so not much need for explanation.
INFORMATION
I've written a short guide on DDR...
BRIEF DDR GUIDE
To put it plainly, no one is "naturally talented" at DDR. I doubt anyone would be able to pass Paranoia on their first try of DDR.
To become good at DDR, you need to spend time on it and be willing to commit yourself.
OK, there are several techniques to DDR which will make parts of songs easier, but first, I'll start off with a bit of guidance for novice players.
Here below is a picture of the DDR stage:
The classic start for novice players should be left foot on left arrow and right foot on right arrow. Keep in mind that you won't get penalised for pressing the wrong arrow at the wrong time, so that's why your able to press and hold down on the arrow.
For right-footed players: keep your left foot on the left arrow and use your right foot to press the up, right and down arrows. Keep in mind that when there is a vertical jump (up and down at the same time) you have to move that left foot, but it's recommended that after it, you move back to the original position.
For left-footed players: do the same as you would for right foot players except using your left foot instead.
Once you have got the hang on using this "pivot" technique, playing DDR will be much more simpler.
Here are the songs I recommend to progress from:
1st Challenge: Have You Never Been Mellow [1st-3rd Mix]
This song has many gaps in it, so if your getting a bit off beat, tap to the beat with your foot even when an arrow is not there. This may look silly but, if it helps you, then so be it.
2nd Challenge: Butterfly [1st/2nd Mix]
This song is probably one of the most well known songs for DDR. Not much advice for this one, except just keep watching the arrows and anticipate them.
3rd Challenge: Paranoia [1st-4th Mix]
Yup, considered a good challenge for a novice. This song incorporates double and triple steps. My advice is just keep your eyes on the screen, no matter what. With enough practice you'll be able to pass this song in no time =) Congratulations if you do =)
