UNCLE MINGO, WILL HOGE --The Mingo boys have been running on fumes for a quite while, so it's no surprise that this is a "farewell" performance for the jam-oriented frat rock band. The big news here is opening act Will Hoge, whose band appropriate all the classic "nuances" of traditional, white- boy rock. Sporting a solid 4/4 backbeat, former Georgia Satellite Dan Baird's guitar roar and Hoge's nasal drawl, the band recall Tom Petty happily exiled on main street. This is unadulterated '70s rock, seemingly untroubled by any musical development of the past quarter century. The fact that the calendar reads 2000 and airbrushed teenyboppers rule the airwaves actually makes such a reactionary stance feel downright subversive. Creative Loafing - Atlanta |
