Bristol Beaufighter TFX
This aircraft model depicts a Beaufighter TF. Mk X, of 455 Squadron, RAAF, attached to RAF Coastal Command. Based at Langham, Norfolk, England, 1944.
455 Squadron RAAF formed part of an 'ANZAC' anti-shipping strike wing along with 489 Squadron RNZAF. The Kiwis carried the torpedoes to sink the transports, ('Torbeaus') and the Aussies carried the bombs and rockets to attack and draw the defensive fire from the flack ships escorting the German convoys, ('Flackbeaus').
"The system worked very well...The Langham Wing destroyed ten of thousands of tonnes of enemy shipping over a wide area of the European coast in the English Channel and the North Sea. In October 1944 the squadron (along with its New Zealand partner) moved to Dallachy in Scotland for operations off the Norwegian coast and then to Thornaby (England) in early May 1945 to attack enemy shipping in the Baltic." (Wilson S., 1990 p.111)
Some of 455 Squadron's Beaufighters carried Australian flags on the nose.
