First Release
Avro Lancaster BI, W4783, 'G for George' 460 Squadron RAAF, 1st Group RAF Bomber Command.
Thanks to VB Planes for their excellent aircraft model that provided me with the inspiration to do this.
Note: I decided to include the exhaust stains across the wings as this was a typical feature of Lancasters and gives this aircraft (rather fittingly) a more war-weary look. The real 'G for George' was also fitted with a H2S ground navigation scanner in a large blister beneath the fuselage, rear of the bomb bay, which the VB Planes Lancaster model does not have.
This Aircraft is the star attraction of the large collection of WWI and WWII aircraft on display at the Australian War Museum in Canberra. It made survived three tours [90 missions] over the Third Reich.
460 Squadron was formed in 1941 and was equipped with Vickers Wellingtons until September 1942. They were then converted onto Avro Lancasters and served the rest of the war as a Heavy Bomber Squadron in1 Group, Bomber Command.
460 Squadron carried out the most bombing raids of all Australian Squadrons and was credited with the greatest tonnage of bombs dropped - 24,000 tons. However, the cost was very high; 900 airmen were listed as killed or missing in action, many became prisoners of war. This was the highest casualty toll for any RAAF squadron. 'G for George' is a memorial to those gallant airmen.
