Day Six

University of Texas - Houston Institute of Molecular Medicine

Dr. Terry Blasdel presented and showed a video on the importance of using animals in lab research. Dr. Blasdel discussed some of the animals commonly used in research, the care and housing of the animals, and how animals have historically been used in medical research. She concluded her presentation with discussions of transgenic mice and knock-out mice, which are used in human genetic studies.

At the IMM, Dr. Peter Doris presented some background information on human genetics, as well as his own research. He also took the group on a brief tour of an actual human genetics lab.

Dr. Mary Ann Smith gave a very interesting presentation and slideshow on some of the environmental factors that can affect health. She discussed pollution, smoking, and other factors in our lives that can negatively affect our health.
