My Son

A baby boy I wanted
Very soon I’d know
“One more push” she told me
“I can’t,” I told her so
This pain is unbelievable
I wish my mum were here
I pushed once more and there it was
The sound I’d longed to hear
A newborn baby crying
It made it all worthwhile
And yes it was a baby boy
A tear fell from my eye
That day seems so very long ago
But how you’ve made me proud
That baby boy is now a man
That stands out of the crowd
I watched you grow with baited breath
I think I’ve done all right
They didn’t give out manuals
When I brought you home that night
You grew from babe to toddler
My how you did change
Mr. Independent it all feels very strange
The years began to roll by
Next thing it was school
Someone else takes over now
I have to share my role
Those years went by without a hitch
Only minor ups and downs
Your next move is to hold your own
Don’t worry I’m still around
So now that day has reached us
For you to fly the nest
You’ll have a home all of your own
And be like all the rest
Even though you won’t be with me
There’s one thing you should know
I always will be here for you
Of that I’m sure… and so
Go out into the big wide world
And hold your head up high
There’s nothing that you can’t achieve
Your limit is the sky
