The last kind of hoax I'm going to talk about is the kind that tries to get you to send money. Beware of false advertising, as always. But be especially careful of emails that tell incredible tales about things like millions of dollars that need to be moved out of a foreign country. Beware especially of any communication that demands secrecy, and of unsolicited emails that ask for personal information about you (name, address, birth date, banking or credit card information, social insurance or social security number, etc.)
Ideally, you should never give out personal information over the internet unless you are sure you are dealing with a reputable company, and the information is being transferred over a secure server. Most of us do give out some identifying information when signing up for free services at places like Yahoo or Hotmail, and when joining online communities. It's part of the trade off for getting the service without paying. The important thing is to be careful who you give your information to. Reputable companies will never solicit information from you!
