In May a post office was opened at South Broken Hill. The Broken Hill Hotel changed its name to the Freemasons Hotel in July. The new electric light plant in Blende Street was given a trial run in August and worked satisfactorily. In September Argent Street between Sulphide Street and Oxide Street was lit by electricity for the first time. William Humphries,formerly of the Terminus hotel,opened the Newmarket Hotel at the northern end of the township. 1892-- Another disastrous fire occurred in February when several shops were destroyed,from the Southern corner of Argent and Oxide Streets,to Argent Lane. A volunteer Fire Brigade was established at South Broken Hill. The new post office was opened in April,when all letter boxes were transferred from the old site adjoining the Grand hotel. Both the gaol and the fire station buildings were completed towards the end of the year. There were 985 births,549 deaths, and 226 marriages in Broken Hill for the year,and the total population had reached 22,135 or 25,831 for the whole district. 1893--The York Hotel, owned by S.R. Wilson and managed by J.H.Cosgrove,was destroyed by fire on March 15. The hotel (now the site of Liberty House) was first licensed on February 6,1888. Five Breweries were operating in Broken Hill-the Waverly, West End, South Australian, Burton's (in Blende Street at the Southern corner of Bromide Street) and Shelleys's in Morgan Street where a light hop beer was brewed. Former Silverton pharmacist, H. C. Armstrong, established the Medical Hall Chambers in Argent Street as a pharmaceutical supply centre, making use of the premises previously occupied by the Australian Joint Stock Bank. At the end of the year there were nine mines in various stages of operation on the main Broken Hill lode, namely Broken Hill North, Junction North ,Junction, British, Block 14,B.H.P.Company Limited, Block 10,Central and Broken Hill South. Nearly 1,000 men were unemployed at the end of December, and many had left the township to seek employment elsewhere, resulting in a temporary decrease in population. Despite this, over 4,000 were employed at the mines, of whom 3,000 were on the payroll of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited. |
