Will set for a mill
SPARE
us all, oh mother of God. Chasm-jawed chart bore
Will Young's debut single looks set to sell over a
million records in its first week, to become the
fastest-selling UK single ever.
Well
love a flaming duck.
And still the stats keep on pumping out.
Sales of the Pop Idol champ's double a-side single, Evergreen and Anything Is
Possible, have already exceeded half a million in two days, setting it on course
to re-write the record books.
Music retailers are predicting that the single from the winner of the ITV1
talent show will smash through the magic million sales barrier by the time the
new charts are announced this Sunday.
No other UK recording has sold a million copies in its first week, with the
nearest being Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas?, which sold 750,000 copies
in its week of release in 1984.
But despite the phenomenal success of Young's debut release, a survey has
revealed that the majority of the public believe his career will not last.
In a survey commissioned by music channel, Music Choice, 52 per cent of those
questioned said they thought Will's career would last no longer than a year.
And only 12 per cent of those surveyed felt that Will Young has what it takes to
spend a lifetime in pop, like British greats such as Elton John, Sting and Paul
McCartney.
Kevin Spector, head of programming at Music Choice, said: "These results
seem to suggest that the British public do not expect manufactured pop stars to
be around for a long time.
"Brits have bought into the success of TV shows such as Pop Stars and Pop
Idol which look certain to deliver new talent every year.
"Our audience research shows that music fans are less loyal to one genre or
artist and often desire a wider range. Variety is the spice of pop."
And rest.
