Will on course to sell a million
Pop Idol Will Young sold 385,000 copies of his new single on its first day of release yesterday and industry experts claim the single is well on course to sell a million copies in its first week.
Sales of Will's debut, Evergreen/Anything Is Possible, hit record numbers at Virgin Megastores yesterday.
HMV Chart expert Gennaro Castaldo says that sales will even increase at the weekend when music fans traditionally go shopping for music. 'On that basis, it's likely that Will's track could be the first debut single to sell over a million copies in its first week of release,' says Castaldo. 'Even at this early stage it's definitely a contender for biggest single of the year.'
In contrast, Hear'Say's debut single, Pure And Simple, sold 550,000 copies in its first week of release. Will's BMG label boss Simon Cowell said last week: 'I'll be very disappointed if we don't break Hear'Say's sales figures.'
The question now is how long can Will stay at the top? With such huge sales figures it's likely that Will will remain at No 1 for a few weeks, ironically perhaps until Pop Idol runner up Gareth Gates releases his debut single, Unchained Melody, on 18 March.
