Will Young Sales Update
Sales of Will Young's single are continuing to defy expectations this afternoon with record stores selling out throughout the country.
Virgin Megastores report that everyone from middle-aged women to kids are buying more than one copy each.
Virgin took on extra staff in their Glasgow store to cope with demand as over 1,000 copies were sold by late afternoon. In Virgin's Leeds store 500 singles were sold by late afternoon, 95% of which were Will Young singles with fans buying more than one copy each. At Virgin's Brighton branch people were queuing outside the store at 7.30am. Virgin's Cardiff store opened 30 minutes early this morning to cope with demand. Store manager Nigel Holmes said: 'No other single release has been anything like it.'
It's been a similar story at HMV stores throughout the country this afternoon.
Colin Cassedy, store manager of HMV Manchester told worldpop: 'From what we've seen here it's outselling Hear'Say's first single. The biggest single in terms of first day sales last year was Hear'Say, and Evergreen looks likes it's doing much better than that. There seems to be a lot of mums coming and buying the single, the sort of people who generally come in once a year when these big singles come out. Lots of people are buying three or four copies, presumably for their families and friends.'
Ian Depasois, store manager of Manchester, Market St told worldpop: 'We've sold about 650 copies since this morning. We've had some kids in but generally it's been a varied mix of people of all ages coming in but I'd have to say that they have been nearly all women.'
A spokesperson for Glasgow HMV, Argyll St said: 'We've sold 500 copies since this morning, and customers have been pretty much across the board, agewise. I'd say between 12 to 35 really. It's been fairly busy all day, there was no one banging on the doors to get in this morning but I can't readily recall a time where there's been this much activity for a single.'
