Will he, won't he?
Pop Idol winner Will Young's debut single, the double A-side Evergreen/Anything Is Possible, is set to be the fastest-selling single in chart history according to early sales returns from record retailers across the country today.
Record retailers have placed record pre-orders totalling 1.2m copies. HMV chart expert Gennaro Castaldo told worldpop: 'We could be looking at over 250,000 sales by the end of play today.'  By contrast, Popstars winners Hear'Say sold 160,000 copies of Pure and Simple in its first day.
HMV stores across the country reported people queuing before the doors opened for business today. Customers have also been buying more than one copy. In HMV's Dundee store one woman, who had been queuing since 8am, bought five copies for friends and family members.
HMV's Castaldo said: 'We shouldn't really be surprised at such a massive response if you consider that Hear'Say sold about 550,000 copies of Pure And Simple in its week of release a year, or so, ago. If you allow for that fact that up to 15m people have been watching Pop Idol, and that five million took the trouble to vote for Will in the final, there's every chance he could break through the 1m barrier in his first week to establish a new record for a debut release. When you consider that it can sometimes take 250,000 sales to secure a Christmas No 1, that really shows the magnitude of what is going on here.'
It is a similar story at Virgin stores throughout the country. At Virgin's Glasgow branch, by 3pm this afternoon the single had already sold over 600 copies making it the fastest-selling product the store has ever had. The store reported a broad cross-section of the public buying the single, with student in particular rushing to get their hands on a copy. Additional staff have been drafted into the store to cope with demand and additional orders of the single have been placed.  Stephen Hunter, store manager commented: 'This is the biggest-selling single that we have had by miles.'
A spokesman for Virgin Megastores said: 'It's gone bonkers.  We've already had reports from some stores that they are going to sell out by the end of the day, right the way through from Glasgow to Hastings. Virgin Megastores placed their biggest-ever order for a single using the sales of Hearsay's debut single within its first two weeks as a gauge.'
