He married Elizabeth Sanders. She was born Bet. 1797 - 1805 in SC; daughter of John Sanders of Barnwell Co, SC; as ALDRICH HOH 1880 Barnwell Co age 80 with dau Nancy.

Notes for David Aldridge/Aldrich/ * [Barnwell SC] Arledge:

Mary Jane Arledge Murray believes that Clement had son named David, though he is not mentioned in his father's will. She believes he died young. I do not know her source for this name as a child of Clement's. However, there *are* records of a David Arledge in Barnwell Co, SC. Could this have been a son of Clement of Fairfield?

I went through the 1810 Barnwell census page by page on microfilm, and no sign of an ARLEDGE or ALDRIDGE (just a Jonathan Allred)

1830 SC Barnwell District had *two* Davids; no explanation at this time :

1840: DAVID ALDRIDGE: 2 males 10-15, one male 15-20, one male 50-60, two females under 5, one female 5-10, one female 40-50. Also listed in same county: A.P. ALDRICH (one male 20-30, one male slave].

About this time, there is also an ALDRICH family that settled in Barnwell County: 1840 Barnwell CO, SC: 225 A.P. Aldrich 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 // 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0// 1 male slave

I think the two families are distinct. The ALDRICH family seems to have ties to Rhode Island, and they are very wealthy lawyers. The ARLEDGE/ALDRIDGE family, on the other hand, seems to be of the farming/planter class. From the page numbers of the 1860 census, they seem to cluster in two different parts of the county. However, often the census taker misspelled the names.

This is an attempt to list the court cases listed in the Barnwell

District Microfilms. I am sure I have made mistakes, but this is my

first attempt to do this. There is a great deal of information available

in the court cases. Much of that information is from families not listed

in the case name. If you see a case with a surname that is in any way

related to yours, you should check out the entire case. For instance, the

case of Otis Edgerton and Wife vs. Jacob Wolfe and Benjamin Bruton, Exor.,

contains information on John Wolfe, John Wolfe's wife and children,

Jacob Wolfe the father of Jacob, John, and the wife of Otis Edgerton, and

Otis's wife's remarriage. In estate cases, married sisters' married names

are often found and relationships to uncles and aunts appointed as guardians

discovered.

The format of the information is the Frame number, name of the case, and the

date the case was filed. The Frame number requires explanation. The person

that filmed the cases had a mechanical counter to count the pages in the group.

So when the case was microfilmed, the 1st page of the 1st case was Frame 000001,

the 2nd page of the 1st case was frame 000002, and so on. The counter and the

court case page were both photographed at the same time, so that the Frame number

gives the position in the film of the case. Since the cases are not in any date

order and some cases are 2-3 pages and some are 40+ pages in length, the Frame

number is very helpful.

last May but was lacking the time I needed to do research. I did obtain a

copy of the membership rolls of Ghent's Branch Baptist Church in Denmark from

My grandmother was Martha Ann Aldrich, b ca 1854 in Barnwell Co, SC. About

1875 she married James Lafayette Redmond, also of Barnwell Co. Martha's

parents were Thomas Arledge or Aldrich and Frances Dyches. Martha's

grandfather was David Aldrich b 1792.It is possible that Richard Dyches was

David's father. My gggf was Robert Duke of Kershaw Co, SC, his son Moses

settled in Barnwell Co and my ggm was Esther Duke who married Seth Dyches.

On another line my gggf was Colonel John Dyches who married Elizabeth

Freeman. Some of their descendants settled in Orangeburg Co. Thomas

Arledge's second wife was Martha Morris, perhaps the daughter of William

Morris. This Martha was b ca 1848, I think. I will exchange on any of these

lines.

My grandmother was Martha Aldrich/Arledge Redmond who was born ca 1855and died Nov 1930. She is buried in Double Pond cemetery in Barnwell. Her father was Thomas Aldrich born ca 1829; the son of David Aldrich. Will exchange.

Am researching the family of my g-gandmother Alice Henrietta Arledge Sandifer.

Born 23 Nov 1855 died 25 Mar 1927. She was married to Benjamin Franklin

Sandifer.

Both are buried at Ghent's Branch in Denmark, SC.

Children were Della, Julia Gertrude (Gertie), Manor, Monnie, Ada Pauline (my

grandmother), and Harris. All born in Barnwell/Bamberg Co., SC) Hoping that

last May but was lacking the time I needed to do research. I did obtain a

As you can see, this presents another question - Who was Alice's mother? Was

Radice Wolf or Rachel A.? It is possible that Radice died after Alice's birth

in 1853

and James remarried. I will do some WOLF research and see what I can find on

Radice. I don't think that even in the old handwriting that Rachel and Radice

could have been mistaken for one or the other.

Am just starting to get back into my research as I seem to have overdosed

there for awhile....had to take a break. Will let you know what I find out,

if anything. Just may reamain on of those mysteries.

I am sorry to say that my trip to the newspaper in search of my Alice Arledge Sandifer's parents did not turn up much. Following is obituary as taken from the Bamberg Herald , Bamberg, SC dated Thursday, March 31, 1927.

Mrs. B.F. Sandifer died suddenly at the home of Mrs. Essie Delk, in Barnwell, last Thursday evening as a result of a paralytic stroke. The deceased was seventy three years of age and had spent the greater part of her life in this county. She was a kind and good woman, well beloved by those with whom she came into contact. She was a faithful member of the Ghents' Branch Baptist church. Interment took place in the cemetery of that church Friday, the Rev. J.B. Caston and Rev. A.F. O'Kelly officiating. Survivors are her husband, B.F. Sandifer, three daughters, Mrs. Bob Lee Hightower, of Denmark; Mrs. Barney Smoak, of Bamberg; and Mrs. Gertie Hightower, of Barnwell; two sons, Harry Sandifer of Charleston, and M.A. Sandifer, of Atlanta, and one brother, Jim Aldrich, of Jacksonville, Fla.

Thomas J. Arledge

Thomas J. Arledge, 84, of Port Wentworth, died March 19 at Effingham

Care Center .

The native of Metter was employed by J.C. Lewis Ford from 1937 to 1942

as a mechanic. He retired from Union Camp in 1978 after 36 years. He was

an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Bonnybridge Baptist Church in Port Wentworth,

serving in many capacities, including deacon for many years. He was a

member of Chatham County Recreation Department, Port Wentworth Lions

Club and groundskeeper for Lions Club Ball Park, where he coached

softball for 28 years.

SURVIVORS: three daughters and a son-in-law, Dorothy A. Barras of

Guyton, Rose M. Davis of Bloomingdale and Linda and John R. Batchelor of

Guyton; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren , a great-great-grandchild

and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION; 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral

Home, Effingham Chapel.

SERVICE: 11 a.m. Friday at Bonnybridge Baptist Church, burial in Forest

Lawn.
