Descendants of John W. * [Rapides/Bienville LA] Arledge

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN W. * [RAPIDES/BIENVILLE LA]1 ARLEDGE was born March 06, 1800 in prob. SC; bought land in LA in 18361, and died Bet. 1841 - 1842. He married MORIAH LOU LOW2 Abt. 1830, daughter of ROBERT LOW and NANCY ???. She was born February 28, 1813 in MS; married Arledge, then McBride; moved to Newton Co, TX after 1860 (Old Salem)3, and died after 1880 (listed on 1880 Newton Co, TX census, age 67, in home of son Thomas).

Notes for JOHN W. * [RAPIDES/BIENVILLE LA] ARLEDGE: John Arledge was probably from South Carolina, and came to Louisiana in the 1830s. Land records show that an Isaac and William Arledge registered for land in Bienville and Madison Parishes as early as 1835, and it is likely that John was with them. John's family was enumerated in the Claiborne Parish, LA census in 1840, and they were closely associated with his in-laws, the Low family. John apparently died shortly after this, in about 1842, and Mariah Low Arledge remarried a Thomas McBride and had several children with her new husband.

In 1830 census we find an Isaac ALDRIDGE and Isam ALDRIDGE in Claiborne Parish, LA.: Joy Moore's transcription: ISAAC ALDRIDGE Males 1----under 5 1-----20/30 Female 1----15/20

ISAM ALDRIDGE Males 1---15/20 1---20/30 1---50/60 Females 1---50/60

Where was John ARLEDGE in 1830? _________________________

In Bienville (formerly Claiborne) Parish, LA, Joy Moore found a deed where John Arledge bought 160 acres of land from Wesley McClary on July 20 1836. Witnessed by Peter Franks, R L Kilgore and signed Wesley McClary and John Arledge. The only reason it exists is because it was recopied in 6 day of Sept 1849 after the fire in Claiborne by the parish recorder William B Stewart. John Arledge paid $100 cash in hand for the 160 acres.

More on this deed from Joy: "I looked over that deed and John spelled his name Arleage not Arledge. It was witnessed by Peter Franks and R L Kilgore and bought from Wesley McClary. The signature of the deed above is R M Drew (Parent of Harmon Drew , judge in 1854 ?) The bottom as best as I can read it says "I George W Peets, Parish Image in & for the Parish of Claiborne absolutely certify that the within as a foregoing has been duly recorded in notarical book A on page 11 in my office on this 20th day of July AD 1836 In faith whereof I have hereunto to affix my hand and seal of office G W Peets Parish Image Then at very bottom is I hereby certify that the above is a true copy of the original ? or act of page reviewed this 6 day o September AD 1849 William B Stewart Recorder

In 1840 census, we find a John ARLEDGE in Claiborne Co, LA (see below)

John apparently died around 1842, since his wife Mariah remarried Thomas McBride.

Generation No. 2

2. ALLEN W.2 ARLEDGE (JOHN W. * [RAPIDES/BIENVILLE LA]1) was born July 23, 1830 ; Acquired land in Bienville Parish, LA in 1860; Rapides HOH 1860 census10, and died October 1862 in Tupelo, MS; had lived in Alexandria, LA; Co E 16th LA Inf; died in Civil War POW camp (of measles?). He married ELIZA ANDERSON February 23, 1851 in Bienville Par, LA, Marriage Bk A-90 (as ALDRIDGE). She was born September 05, 1833 in LA; came to TX from LA as widow in 1860s with 5 children11, and died December 21, 1888.

Notes for ALLEN W. ARLEDGE: After the death of his father in the early 1840's, Allen apparently left his mother Mariah's home (she had remarried Thomas McBride and started a new family) and was enumerated in the 1850 Bienville Parish census living with his grandfather Robert Low. He and Eliza Anderson married soon after that, in February 1851.

Allen W. Arledge bought 84 acres of land in Bienville Parish in 1860, according to BLM records, although he and family were enumerated in the Rapides Parish census that year. Joy Moore sent a letter written by Ada Presley of DeRidder, LA, who wrote: "Allen W. Arledge and family [wife Eliza, sons John, Harmon, Betsey, Frances, Tom, Henry] lived in Rapides Parish near Hinton, Louisiana until he went to the Civil War April 26, 1862. Grandfather Allen died in Virginia."

Maudie Allen Bellah told Joy Moore they went from Alexandria area to the small settlement of Hineton near Alexandria, La. She was told they were near enough to the fort to hear guns of battle. Eliza would hang clothes to dry with tears rolling down her cheeks.

Ada Presley's letter continues: "Then Grandma [Eliza] and children moved to Newton County, Texas. They stopped first at the old Jeff West place on what is now Highway 87. It was syrup making time and Grandma had a Negro boy driving one of her wagons and when he told the Negroes working there that they had been freed they were so glad they picked him up ad carried him around."

"Grandma settled in Newton County and lived forty years on what is now the old (black) Tom Holmes place. Grandma married a few years after Grandpa died. She married a Mr. Reesy Hamilton. He had a small son by the name of Reese Jr. He grew up with the Arledge children [Harmon, Betsey, Frances, Tom, Henry]. There were four other Hamilton children born to them [Marthan, John, Henretta and Robert Newton]."

Eliza Anderson Arledge and her children were apparently joining her mother-in-law, Mariah Low Arledge McBride (mother of Allen W. Arledge), and her new family who had gone to Newton Co, TX shortly after 1860. Some time in the 1860's, Allen's brother John (b. 1833) and his wife Mary Brinkley also migrated from Rapides Parish to Newton Co, TX. So by 1870, Mariah and the families of her two sons were all in Newton County.

Mariah had remarried Thomas McBride in LA in about 1842 after the death of her husband John Arledge. The McBrides subsequently had 5 children (Milly, Nancy, Susannah, Thomas and Fielding). When they moved to Newton County, TX, they settled in the place known today as Hughes Fish Camp, Old Salem, TX. From there, Thomas McBride entered the Confederate Army about 1862, and apparently returned safely since he was listed in the 1870 census.

John and Mary Arledge left Newton County, TX to go to Oklahoma; their descendants now live in Love County, Oklahoma, where John is buried. It is not known what became of John and Mariah's other children: Isaac (b 1835), Frances (b. 1838) and Elizabeth (b. 1841). Allen and Eliza's son Harmon settled in Calcasieu Parish, LA (Niblet's Bluff, near Vinton). His brother Tom (Thomas Anderson Arledge) stayed in Newton Co, TX, although some of his descendants returned to Louisiana (Beauregard Parish), as did brother Henry and family. Most of Allen and Eliza's descendants today live in and around Beauregard and Calcasieu Parish, LA.

From Joy Moore:

I suspect this is the same family as the ones listed in 1870 Newton Co, TX, given the relationship to other Newton CO, TX families. Yet the ages seem to be 10 years off; this John would have been born in 1843 rather than 1833. Could the census taker have made an error? The older dates seem right, since the younger dates make them almost too young to have had the children (starting at age 14?).

Notes for HARMON DREW ARLEDGE: Joy Moore wrote: "My ggrandfather Harmon Arledge had such love of his land one of his last wishes was that he could plow one last time in his OWN land. His son hitched the horse and helped him to the field. Several days later he died content at 86. Such as he made this Great Land.

Joy also wrote: " The dates I gave you of Harmon's marriage and children's births came from Bible that May owned and was probably Ellen Lenora's."

Joy said Harmon shot and killed his wife's brother Claiborne Holmes in a hunting accident during a hog hunt. She refers to "info I got out of that book "Some Early Southeastern Tx Families": The Mrs Arledge refered to was Eliza. In another part of the book I did learn that Harmon was older than nine when he shot and killed Claiborne. It was a hog hunt and an accident but it happened after his marriage to Ellen Holmes. The book was mostly about the Holmes family and the families who married into it."

Am looking for relatives or descendants of three brothers - Harmon, Henry and Tom ARLEDGE. They were reportedly born in the "old States" and came to Newton Co., Texas with only their mother. Harmon ARLEDGE married Ellen Leonora HOLMES 3 Apr 1868. Henry ARLEDGE, b. feb 1862, married William WEST's daughter, Nancy, on 28 Aug 1884. Tom reportedly married a CHANCELLOR and moved away. Both Harmon and Henry married into different lines of my family tree. Would be interested in any information on them and their descendants. June 5, 1997

Meadows Cemetery, Beauregard Parish, Louisiana Contributed by Evelyn Cole

MEADOWS CEMETERY Listing Compiled by Roberta B. Doty and Evelyn E. Cole September 1992

Annotated by La Vaughn H. "LV" Hayes

Traveling south from Merryville on LA 389, go 5.5 miles to find Meadows Cemetery. Turn right through an iron gate over a pipe cattle guard. There is a sign arched over the gate with the name "Meadows Cemetery." Don't look for the usual green highway marker to indicate the cemetery---it isn't there (1991)! This is a large cemetery with a cyclone fence surrounding it.

The cemetery is just off the highway and can be seen coming from the south, but isn't readily seen coming from the north due to the curve in the road. Just watch your mileage---5.5 miles from US 190.

There is a flag pole inside the cemetery fence, which was dedicated by VFW Cole-Miers Post #3619 out of De Ridder.

At Meadows, I had a feeling of peacefulness. It was quiet, with the traffic noises and the sound of the birds, rain frogs, the breeze in the tree tops, and the distant sound of someone doing a bit of carpentry muffled. In case you are a bird watcher, this would be a good place to see many of them.

Hi! I am trying to trace my family tree for a class I am taking in college. I would like to find any information that I can about John Arledge who came over to the United states with his father and some brothers and half brothers. Some of who all went in separate directions. John wound up in Mobile, Alabama. He fathered my great grandfather who later moved to Courtney Flatts in Love county Oklahoma. He married a half indian woman named Georgiana Beauford. Please Help me.

I just finished talking to Evelyn Hooks who grew up in Bonham Tx and she told me that the Arledges there were somehow cousins to our line, Bob that is your line She said her grandfather told her when she was young that they were all cousins but she does not know how but here is what she did tell me Johnaton Arledge b 1833 Bienville Parish + Mary C Brinkley John b 1856 + Katie Bishop children were James b 1891 Arthur Bennett b 1895 Then John's wife died and when his mother died he took his sons and moved to Bonham Tx where he remarried and had several more children: Bernard Arledge Arledge Cem Lucetta + ? Winkler Dana + ? Fairchild Allie Evelyn + ? Lillie + ? Vanzandt They lived all their lives in Bonham TX and their children still live there. She has more info and is going to make copies of her notes and send to me. She also has a photo taken at the grave of her ggrandfather Johnathon 1833 who died on Oct 17, 1889. She says the marker cannot be read now due to corrosion. Mary C Brinkley is buried there too in an unmarked grave.

Joy also wrote in Jan 1999:

I am so excited ! ! ! I just got the mail and had a letter from Evelyn Hooks and she sent me a photo of a cousin on back of a postcard dated 1910, It is of a lovely young girl of Gibson girl time and would you believe it the second name of Mary Brinkley who married Johnathon and her two brothers names as well as names dates, and marriages of the whole family and about John 1856 This says "Our Father John Arledge born on Feb 11, 1856 departed this life Dec 25, 1937 being 81 years, 11 mo, and14 days old. He married Miss Kate Bishop to this union four children were born in which two survive, James Edward and Arthur. Later he married Miss E E Fax of Healdston to this union were born five children: one son Bernard, four daughters (Mrs J R Fairchild, Mrs Steve Vandzandt, Mrs H C Winkler, and Mrs H A Hughes of Sulphur OK). At the time of his death he was with his son Arthur of Courtney OK, where he had made his home for several years. He joined the Methodist Church some 40 years ago and was a member until death called him. Funeral services were conducted at the Rubottom Cemetery where his remains were laid to await the Resurrection Day. All is dark in our dwelling, lonely are our hearts today, for the one we loved so dearly has forever passed away.

The names of children are here until 1982 Can you believe this ? There is also a photo of Evelyn, her husband and father Arthur at the grave of Johnathon 1833

From: Winn Parish Enterprise News-American: August 23, 30; September 20, 27, 1989; Winn Parish Past Tense Articles 220, 221, 224, 225 by Staff Historians (transcribed by Gregg Davies):

As stated in previous recent articles, Staff Historians received from Mrs. Patricia Wasson McCain (110 Northgate Circle, Hot Springs, Ark., 71913) a considerable amount of information on her Winn Parish connections. Included was a brief biological sketch concerning her father, George Wasson. ... If anyone can add to Mrs. McCain's collection of memorabilia, please contact her: Mrs. Pat McCain, 100 Northgate Court, Hot Springs, Ark. 71013

Pat McCain added that her parents resided at Riley's Oak Hill Manor in Little Rock and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 27, 1986 before their deaths. In a postscript, she mentions that their celebration was with a trip to visit Opal's sister and brother in law, Loyce and Pete Arledge, whose wedding was mentioned in the journal, and Opal's sister, Jewel Wiggins. The Arledge celebrated their 50th anniversary in December 1987 but were killed in a car-train crash in January, 1988. Opal Wasson died quietly in her sleep October 25, 1987. George suffered a stroke in December 1987 and died of pneumonia February 22, 1988.

Quoted herewith are two entries from George Wasson's daily "Diary" kept while living in Sikes.

"1/1/37-was married on Dec. 27th at Bro. Stokes' Church. Pete (Arledge), Jewel (Opal's sister), witnessed. Went to Monroe and came back Monday. Saw a show and purchased furniture at Wards, $ 187. Came home and waited until Wednesday night before things came. Moved in Thursday (in a small house abandoned by the C. C. Camp site) and spent the first night at home Dec. 31st. Round today (Jan. 1st mail route) had a flat and gave out of gas. Ate first meal at home tonite. Went down to Melvin's (neighbor) and hear that LSU had lost to Santa Clara 21-7. Pitt beat Washington 21-0. Cow got out and went to Simons. Shall go after her tomorrow. Roads were wet today but made it OK."

"«/37-Saturday. Rained last night hard but roads were not bad. Had lots of mail today-catalogs. Bud Talbot told me that the pickets around the house were not paid for. Moved today and went after the cow. Colder tonight. Opal stayed home and sewed today. Made curtains. The radio is good tonight. Went to Melvin's tonight and got milk and butter."

Staff historians and Mrs. McCain hope readers will be interested in George Wasson's daily journal which reflects daily living during the time covered. Mrs. McCain further states that she continues to be interested in life in Winn and Jackson Parishes and will welcome correspondence from anyone sharing her interest.

Notes for ELIZA AMANDA ARLEDGE: Most of the information about the children and grandchildren of Eliza Arledge Spears provided by Melissa Gantt and Jo Ann Franks Bohannon.

Melissa Gantt wrote to Joy Moore: "My granny (Eliza-Lizer) dipped snuff and I don't ever remember seeing her without her spit can nearby. My dad was talking the other day about how she kept him and his friends in line. He said that if one of his friends did something in front of her that they shouldn't, she'd slap their faces just as fast as she'd slap his. She was a strict disciplinarian, but much loved by everyone. She worked hard all her life because her husband left her when her children were young. I remember going to a river camp that Granny and her siblings had. Did you ever go there? I know that once all of us kids got in so much trouble from Granny and all the greats and great-greats. We left the gate to the woods open and wild hogs got into the camp. It was a mess! I also remember having to take a bath in a tin wash tub outside and being so embarrassed because I thought that I was much, much too old for that."
