Ledbetter, Roy C. Ledbetters From Virginia. Wilkinson Printing Company. Dallas, Texas 1964. p. 280: NC, Mecklenburg Co, 1862, George Ledbetter v. Arledge, 53 N. C. (8 Jones Law) 475.

During the Civil War, MacDuffie Arledge was the personal railroad engineer for Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, and piloted the presidential train. After the Civil War, he moved to Charlotte where he engaged in the wholesale grocery business and in financing, according to his grandson Richard Fair "Deacon" Arledge, JR. of Albuquerque, NM (in a 21 May 1951 letter to Roone Arledge, Sr.).

His letter says that there is a leading case in NC legal jurisdiction known as "In re: Arledge's Will" decided in 1915. When MacDuffie Arledge died, a wealthy man, a will was produced leaving the bulk of the estate to his daughter Mrs. Bruns. The will was challenged and set aside and the two sons never spoke to Mrs. Bruns after 1914.

Deacon Arledge, Albquerque, NM was district judge, committed suicide about mid-50's. They had a daughter, his widow died in '70s and I have never heard who the daughter married but will ask a friend to run some record checks for me and let you know.

orphanage in adjacent Richland Co.(Columbia). Later, he settled in Winnsboro, Fairfield Co. where he died and was buried. His death certificate states he was born in Columbia; it was provided by his son Leroy G. Hatchell.

Marine saves couple from possible drowning

NORFOLK, Va. (Sept. 27, 2001) -- Robert Arledge, a retired Army master sergeant, shakes the hand of Staff Sgt. William Brown, of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Atlantic here, and thanks him for his assistance during a recent boating accident. Brown came to the aid of Arledge and his wife Dalys after their canoe overturned in a Newport News, Va. lake. He pulled Dalys to shore and returned to save the canoe and equipment. NAVAL STATION NORFOLK, Va. (Oct. 17, 2001) – Retired Army Master Sgt. Robert Arledge was canoeing with his wife in an area lake recently when he decided he wanted a drink of water. Marine Staff Sgt. William Brown was enjoying the Sunday afternoon with his wife and children only yards away. Both men had no idea their lives would intersect in just seconds.

As Arledge kneeled in the canoe for a drink from a thermos, his knee slipped. When his weight shifted he grabbed on to the side of canoe, causing the boat to roll. Although Arledge and his wife Dalys had life jackets with them, neither were wearing them at the time.

“When we came to the surface I threw my wife a life jacket that was floating nearby,” said Arledge, who clung to one end of the canoe while his wife was just yards away also clinging to the boat. “Then I saw (Staff Sgt. Brown) on shore taking his shoes off and getting ready to dive in.”

Brown had heard the commotion of Arledge pleading with his wife to put on the life jacket. He saw her trying to stay afloat with her head barely above water when he dove in and swam about 50 feet to her side. But before he grabbed a hold of the panicking woman he wanted to quickly try to calm her and keep her from panicking further.

“I stopped before I got to her so she could see me and see how she would react,” said Brown. “Since she already had a life vest in her hand, I was able to pull her back by her hand.”

As Brown’s wife helped pull Dalys to shore, Brown returned to help get Arledge and the canoe to shore.

Once everyone was safe, Brown even returned to retrieve the Arledges’s belongings that were still floating in the lake.

“I was absolutely glad to see him. I was concerned about my wife,” said Arledge, who has been married to Dalys for 44 years. “And we were so weighed down by our clothing. I could barely see her (when she was in the water). All I could see was from the mouth up. It could have been bad. I can not tell you how grateful I am."

After a brief rest, the Arledges hopped back in their canoe to finish their journey, but not without thinking about Brown. They returned later to get the name and address of his command, so they could send a letter of thanks.

Soon after, they purchased new top-of-the-line life jackets.

Brown, who joined the Marine Corps in 1989, works for Marine Corps Community Services, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Atlantic, here. He credits his experiences as a military policeman for spurring him into action while many civilians stood on the shore watching as the Arledges fought to stay afloat.

While the Arledges now look back at the incident with a smile, they know the potential deadliness of the situation.

“If he hadn’t gotten me out, I’d be on the bottom of the lake,” Dalys said.

Amelia Medford

Amelia Bruns Medford, of Columbus, died Sept. 24, 2001, at

Tryon Estates.

A native of Charlotte, she was the youngest daughter of the

late Mamie Arledge and William Louis Bruns, one of the

original partners of Garibaldi and Bruns Jewelers. She

graduated from Converse College in 1932 with a degree in

vocal performance. After advanced study in New York, she

accepted a teaching position at Louisburg College where she

met her husband, John William Medford, a banker from

Oxford, N. C.

In 1943 the Medfords moved to Lancaster. S. C. where Mr.

Medford was employed by the Bank of Lancaster. Mrs.

Medford was active in the musical life of the community,

organizing and directing the Lancaster Choral Club and

serving as organizer and President of the Community Concert

Association. She was instrumental in establishing music

classes in the local schools. She maintained her ties with

Charlotte, serving a term on the board of The Charlotte

Symphony. She was a communicant of Christ Church,

Lancaster, serving on the board of the Episcopal Church

Home for Children and was a member of various local civic

clubs. The Medfords moved to Tryon in 1978 after her

husbands retirement. Mr. Medford died in 1991.

Survivors include a sister, Mamie Bruns Choate of Charlotte;

a son John William “Bill” Medford of Lexington, N.C.; a

daughter, Mary Ann M. Claud of Landrum; and two

grandchildren, Elizabeth Louise Claud and John William

Medford Claud.

A graveside service will be held in Lancaster at a later date.

great site. never imagined ther are so many of us.my name is ryan bruce

ellsworth arledge. my father is paul nathanel arledge. his father was denis

danahue arledge.his wife (my grandma arledge)was lula morris. she was a

half breed cherokee indian .her father was a full blooded chief. this is

about all i know of my tree. my dad is 75yrs old & sharp as a tack. by the

way he loves to tell stories .i dont think he knows who his grand father

was. the were from south carolina. my dad did tell me that our first 2

arledge men came from ireland in the late 1800's. brothers ian & ryan.

I dont think ive helped much but i sure would like to fill in the blanks. o yea roone
