CORNPEX '98

Antique malls are hit or miss: for heavy duty deltiology, you've gotta do the postcard shows. I've been hitting the Cornpex show for the last four years, and it's always been a prime source for collectible cards. Row upon row of dealer tables. Gray file boxes packed with clean or once-sent cards. Sharp-eyed collector types. What could be cooler?

Held in Bloomington, Illinois in early November, Cornpex (no, I don't know what the name signifies!) brings stamp and postcard dealers in from all over the country. The selection is great, and there are plenty of prime fat cards. The savvier dealers'll even have a separate section for ‘em, though most of the time you have to ferret through the more general "comic" sections.

This season's offerings were particularly choice - plenty of Wellman cards, lotsa butt jokes, along with the miscellany below. Saw four different versions of the "same old moon" joke, but the one I've posted is the most nicely rendered. (The husband in the card may be grumpy, but from where I sit, he's got nothing to grouse about!) Got another "Travel Broadens" card (number five in the series): not the best 'un, but I ultimately couldn't resist posting it. I even managed to trade some travel cards for some comic linens and a tinted sideshow card featuring one of my all-time favorite circus fat ladies, Alice from Dallas.

All in all, a successful day.

(Yes, I know the "Country Air" card also shows up on one of Karl Neidershuh's postcard pages. But I love the look of unadulterated pleasure on the heroine's face!)
