FAT POSTCARDS II

The association of fatness with wealth is a connection only hard-core Leftists are likely to make today. The moderne nouveau riche is more likely to spend its money on liposuction or a personal trainer than on lavish dining. Back in the forties and fifties, though, you could still get away with a fat matron joke - as we see in many of our entries here.

WB

Jimmy Hatlo

Jimmy Hatlo’s “They’ll Do It Every Time” was a popular newspaper feature that originated in 1929 and continues to this day: in the mid-forties a series of cards featuring color versions of Hatlo’s cartoons was issued by Mutoscope. Not surprisingly, several of ‘em featured fat women indulging in the kind of contradictory behavior that the cartoonist loved to delineate.
