ARTHUR THIELE
Arthur Thiele’s postcard work is prized by lovers of fantasy and animal imagery (his cat and dachshund cards are particularly popular). But as a comic illustrator of Middle European life in the early part of the twentieth century, Thiele was unmatched at rendering both fat women and men. He was particularly adept at serving up super-sized women (check out the “Sea Stars” card below). I haven’t the vaguest idea what any of the punch-lines say: my one attempt at translating a line via Altavista gave me gobble-de-gook. But if they’re too insulting, please don’t tell me.
