DOG FOULING
A persistent problem that the ASSociation receives alot of complaints about is dog mess. Despite dog bins and pavement signs some dog-owners are still not clearing up after their pets. The council are planning more 'flag the poo' events as research has shown that offenders are more likely to change their behaviour if 'shocked' into action. The aim of the events is to mark all the examples of dog mess with brightly coloured flags to illustrate the extent of the problem. These awareness raising events are followed up by targeted enforcement operations such as £50 fines and court prosecutions. There will be a 'flag the poo'event in St Giles Churchyard before our summer fete. Lucas Gardens will also be targeted. The WRA are also liaising with Southwark about the signage of the dog exercise area in Lucas Gardens, as dog owners still fail to understand that a DOG FREE ZONE, is an area barred to dogs, and not somewhere that dogs are allowed to run free.

BROWN WHEELIE BINS
Although our area has not received a delivery of brown wheelie bins for garden waste, they are available for anyone who would like one. The only condition is that you must have sufficient space within your front entrance path for the bin, or store it in your garden and only put it on the pavement on the collection day. The green household waste wheelie bins should also not be left on the pavement. This continues to be an ongoing problem in Wilson and Maude Road. Not only are they a hazard to paritally sighted pedestrians, or those with shopping trolleys, push chairs, baby buggies or wheel chairs, they look unsightly and scruffy. Please take pride in where you live and put your wheelie bin inside your gate after it has been emptied on a Thursday morning. To order your brown wheelie bin and any additional blue boxes or bags you might need call 0207 525 2000.

STREET CLEANING
The streets in the association area are cleaned on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, except Vestry Roaad which is swept everyday. If you see dumped refuge or dog mess you can contact Southwark Council on 020 7525 5000, who will clear it up within 24 hours. They will also remove graffiti within four hours of your call. The are committed to repairing street lights within five working days.

PARKING PROBLEMS
Many residents will be aware of car owners who drive into our streets to park their cars while they commute to work. The result of this behaviour is that there are no parking spaces for residents, especially those of us who come and go during the day. One way of dealing with this problem would be to create a Controlled Parking Zone in our area. This would limit parking between say 8.30am and 6.30pm to vehicles displaying a Residents Parking Permit. The downside of this would be

  • There is a charge for the permit - approximately £85 per year
  • It does not guarantee you a parking place
  • Any daytime visitors would have to pay to park
  • Loss of parking 'spaces' to metered bays, areas with dropped curbs, and the corners
  • The council will 'give' permits to key workers who need their cars and work at the Town Hall
The advantages are
  • Uniformed Parking Wardens will be patrolling to enforce the regulations
  • Clear corners for pedestrians to cross
  • Turning cars will have improved sight lines
  • Fewer cars will make our streets quieter
We would like to hear your opinion on this issue. One of the conditions of introducing a CPZ is that the area has had a cosultation period and at least 10 households in each street have agreed to its introduction. If you feel that you would like more information, you want to sign a petition or fill in a questionaire to express your views come to the Open Meeting. Questionaires have also been put with the hardcopy newsletter through all 450 doors in our area, so fill one in and return it to the secretary at 24 Wilson Road.

20 YEAR CELEBRATIONS
The Wilson's Resident's Association has now been up and running for 20 years. The Association was founded by six residents in April 1986. To celebrate this landmark we have decided to hold a summer fete on Saturday 29th July 2006 in St Giles Churchyard beginning at 12 noon and finishing around 6pm. There will be lots of activities: bouncy castle, music, face painting, tombola, cake stall, plant stall, raffle, refreshments and a fancy dress competition with prizes. We would like to encourage members of the community to be involved by taking a stall on the day. We have space for ten stalls which can be booked on a first come first served basis at £10 for an adult or £5 for children. Bookings can be made at the Open Meeting on Thursday 27th April, see the secretary on the night. If you have any photographs or memories of the Association over the last 20 years that you would like to share please bring them along so we can put up a display.

WORM COMPOSTERS
As part of a new environmental scheme, the council is offering Southwark residents their oen wormery, an the bargin price of £5. Wormeries are compact units that you can fill with any organic or kitchen waste. The worms then turn it into a liquid fertiliser that you can mix with water to feed your plants, in gaardens, hanging baskets, window boxes or pots. They are made by the St Mungo charity for the homeless and distributed by CRISP, for a limited period you can collect a kit by calling 0207 252 7709 or emailing composting@crispej.org.uk and save £45.

SKIPS
Many residents have been enquiring about the skip service that we have provided in the past. Unfortunately the department in Southwark Council that use to provide this service no longer have the budget. This is obviously very disappointing, and the committee are investigating alternative ways of providing this service. Please remember that bulk refuse will be collected by Southwark Council if you telephone 0207 525 2000
