SOUTHWARK CIVIC AWARDS©

Awards are available in a number of categories including Young Person of the Year, Business Person of the Year and Enhancing Racial Harmony. Local awards, called 'Honorary Liberties', will also be made which cover the old districts of the borough - Camberwell, Southwark and Bermondsey.

Any individual or organisation that has given up their time to offer help to the community can be nominated. For example, they may have helped to foster community spirit in their neighbourhood, or maybe they deserve recognition for their strength or bravery.

Cllr Columba Blango, Mayor of Southwark, said in January 2004: 'Nominating someone for a Civic Award is really easy and a great way to give recognition to a person or organisation for their supreme effort, bravery or achievement. Southwark has so many unsung heroes who carry out great work, often with little or no formal recognition. The Civic Awards are there to recognise and celebrate their efforts so I'd urge everyone to get nominating now.'

  1. The Civic Award scheme is administered by the Southwark Civic Association on behalf of Southwark Council. The association is an independent organisation made up of people from business, heritage and community groups based in Southwark.
  2. Once the nomination process is closed, the Court of the Civic Association will meet to decide the final nominees. Southwark Council will then consider the names recommended by the Association and make the awards.
