RUN1564

RV: The Royal Oak, Devizes Rd. HARE: Twin Rocks. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, 5 Minz, Gt Expectations, On 3, Ember, Slowcoach and All’s Well. A day full of showers, would the hash be fortunate to avoid them? The pack set off in the dry down the Devizes Rd towards the city with loops off into the surrounding streets until arriving at the corner of Kingsland Rd. Down the hill towards the tennis club, with a diversion for certain hounds to catch up with an old running club friend. At the corner of the allotments was it to be across the playing field to the river walk? No, instead it was around the path and over the bridge to the Leisure Centre. Then it was NW along the footpath by the allotments until the Stratford Road was reached. Certain hounds decided it must be further along the road towards Mill Lane, only to be called back to go in the opposite direction to the junction with the track to Old Sarum. Surely it must now be NW straight across the field thought some; but the hare had other ideas and a final sting in the tail. So instead it was a diagonal path north across the field to the base of Old Sarum. The new trail then took the pack along the winding path at the base of the hill until a lane was reached. It was now past 7:00 and the hounds were scenting home so minimal checking was done and as anticipated the new trail was found heading west back to the Stratford Rd. The pace quickened along the road towards Mill Lane and then to Stinkpot Alley; finally the long climb up to the Devizes Rd and back to the RV. Hi Gang gave the crit with a ‘down down’ before him and, never one to miss an opportunity, spelt out various misdemeanours of the pack which could warrant the penalty. Starting with the typo by On Sec of the grid of last week’s run; Gt Expectations for not waiting at a check; blatant blob sliding by On 3; incitement by On Sec about the aforementioned blob sliding and finally comments by On 3 about ‘old people’ of about 60 years of age!! On balance and in view of the last comment Hi Gang awarded the ‘down down’ to On 3 which was consumed in proper style. The hare was thanked for a good trail that had taken 1¼ hr and Ember was congratulated for gaining 4 A’s and securing a place to read law at Warwick. ON ON

RV: Hare Warren Wood. HARE: Coke. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Twin Rocks, Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Slowcoach, Mad Hatter and a late appearance from Polly. A sticky sunny evening, after the rain and gloom of last week, as the Hare explained that the trail was in two parts; the first part laid last night and the remainder to be laid tonight. With that checking commenced and the On was soon called heading north along the main track into the wood; the hare meanwhile set off in a different direction. Alimentarty decided to play the hash equivalent of Pooh Sticks by using twigs to point the direction of the new trail at each check once the On had been called. At the next check the trail turned right and took an anti clockwise loop through the wood, with lots of ‘shiggy’ under foot, until the main track was crossed again. The new trail headed further west with the flour proving hard to find at times, requiring some serious detective work. The pack then came across a small summer house in the middle of the wood with someone busy mowing around it - bizarre! Eventually the Bulbridge Road was reached and the trail turned south. 5 Minz then went for a ‘trip’, fortunately throwing away his horn on the way down and so saving himself serious injury! As the pack approached the main east/west drover’s track at the southern edge of the wood the trail turned east and meandered along a narrow trail with long grass at head height which slowed the pack down. This trail finally joined the main track passing the ON INN which led to a bracing ½ Km run back to the RV. Polly’s car was evident but he wasn’t so Hi Gang decided to go and look for him on his bike; but as he disappeared from view who should arrive from the direction of the ‘On Out’ but Polly. Much calling then ensued but Hi Gang was out of earshot. In the pub Hi Gang, who eventually arrived much perspired from his search, gave the crit tracing the route and its highlights and thanked the hare for a good trail that had taken about the hour. ON ON Hares needed for September!

RV: Deadman Hill, Godshill. HARE: On 3/Ember. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Twin Rocks, Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Slowcoach, Mad Hatter, Coke and Dillon. As the time approached 6 o’clock with the rain steadily falling Hi Gang and Twin Rocks, the only two hounds at the RV were getting worried thinking of all the checking they were going to have to do in the wet, when firstly Slowcoach and then Coke arrived. Soon a goodly number of hounds turned up complaining of the heavy traffic south of Salisbury. Senior Hare read the instructions on the info post at the edge of the car park. This banned public assemblies, musical instruments, noise and other activities that may disturb the peace; so no horn for 5 Minz this week!! Checking commenced at about 10 mins past and the hares were obviously aiming for a record as the trail to the first check was some distance away to the SW down in the valley to the north of the road. After the next check the new trail took the pack left up the hill across the road and along a loop into the valley to the south. It was then back across the road and a drop down a steep track towards a stream. Here the hounds gathered at the bottom to see how Hi Gang would negotiate this on his bike which he did without incident. Some hounds checked towards a ‘bridge too far’ over the stream, but the trail instead swung NE and the hounds were taken through various crossings of the stream as the trail eventually took them in a wide arc around and into Millersford Copse. With the time passing 7 o’clock was this going to be a long one?! However as the pack completed the circle and came out of the wood the ON INN sign was passed with over a Km and a steep climb out of the valley to get back to the car park, another record?! In the pub JM Alimentarty gave the crit and thanked the hares for the trail that had taken just over the hour. ON ON

RUN1557

RV: Figheldean. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Alimentarty, Twin Rocks, On 3, Gt Expectations, Ember, Slowcoach, Mad Hatter, All’s Well and Polly. The pack gathered on the banks of the River Avon and the Hare gave a short brief that warned of long vegetation, with the possibility of nettles and wet underfoot in places. With that he was off for another of his hot trails. Shortly afterwards Hash Cash’s car was seen approaching the RV but then stopped at the road junction and Gt Expectations, with feminine intuition, observed that he must be watching where the hare was going; definitely ‘Down Down’ territory! The pack set off to the aforementioned junction and the On was soon picked up around the backs of the houses to the village hall. The new trail then took the hounds further SE across a field to Ablington. Another check and it was through the farmyard with its country smells! The pack then took some time to find the new route with much searching until at the second attempt (All’s Well to note!) the trail was found across a field towards Syrencot House. Having got their feet wet to get to it the hounds crossed the river by a footbridge; was it to be back towards Figheldean now? No, the hare took the pack further south until a military road was reached. The trail swung east and the village of Brigmerston came into view and Charlie 1 tank crossing was eventually reached after a number of twists and turns. The trail then turned back in a northerly direction and a long run along a muddy track until the pack returned to Ablington. An invigorating leap over an electric fence and a jog through a paddock and the scent of home was in the hounds nostrils; this was just as well as the sky became darker with an impending storm. The Hare’s trademark double blobs came to the fore and the pack retraced its steps towards the RV. The downpour then started in earnest and it became a dash back through the village to the cars before a total soaking was experienced. After a drive through torrential rain to the Plough Slowcoach gave the crit noting Hash Cash’s misdemeanour, taking sneaky observations of the hare’s route before the run and some blob sliding later. The Hare was thanked for an excellent trail that had taken about 1hr 10mins. ON ON

RUN1556

RV: The Lion’s Head, Winterslow. HARE: Hi Gang. HOUNDS:, Alimentarty, 5 Minz, On 3, Slowcoach, Dillon and Mad Hatter. A cooler evening of late as the pack gathered, with the threat of rain from the dark clouds that were advancing. The brief was given and checking commenced under a light shower. The On was soon called heading NW up the main road. The first check was reached; a quick turn right along a narrow path and the trail took the hounds northwards through the houses to the Clarendon Way. The Hare then took the pack in an anti clockwise loop across the fields taking in Hill Farm, the lane to East Winterslow and then a return SW along familiar paths to the village centre near the Lord Nelson. The trail then turned for home but as this was a Hi Gang lay that hope was short lived as the pack was taken south across the common and up the hill to and over Barry’s Field to the junction with the West Winterslow road. It was then east along the road to Yarmley’s Farm and finally an On Inn down the hill back to the RV. In the pub 5 Minz gave the crit’ and pointed out that both the Hare and the Hon Sec had got the name of the pub wrong as stated on the Hareline; it was the Lion’s Head not the Red Lion! He then gave a brief dissertation on meteorology and how cloud convergence can lead to a chain of showers; fortunately to the north of the village this evening. Hash Cash and the Hon Sec were noted as having transgressed by being deep in conversation at one point and continuing to check away after the ‘On’ had been called by the JM’s horn! Two other hounds were singled out for following the Hare, who was taking an alternative bike friendly route, rather than the trail itself! Hash Cash had been observed taking a short cut while both the other JM and Hon Sec had been noted as taking ‘long cuts’. The JM had got in the way of the Hare while he was busily converting potential energy into its kinetic relation, i.e. speeding downhill. In fact there was only one hound with no misdemeanours! Having said all that 5 Minz noted it had been a good hash of an hour’s duration. ON ON

RUN1555

RV: The Old Castle, Old Sarum. HARE: Coke. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Gt Expectations, On 3, Slowcoach, Dillon, Empty Bucket and Polly. The hounds gathered in the car park, on a sunny and very sticky evening with 5 Minz on parade having recovered from his injury. The hare looking a bit battered and bruised especially in the derrière and rear leg area, but more of that later, called the pack to order and gave the brief. Checking commenced and the ‘On’ was soon found heading down Castle Rd towards the city. A check opposite Hudson’s Field and the new trail was found across the field to Stratford Sub Castle. A neat little loop then took the pack around the rear of the houses and along to the bend in the road and the drovers track leading up to Old Sarum. It was then a left turn and NW across the fields to a further track and a climb NE to the base of the ramparts around the Castle. At this point all hounds were in a lather due to the heat and humidity and On Pres’ bike was making a loud squeaking when peddled. He was therefore accused of squeaking, leaking, peaking and speaking!! A steep climb and the path around the moat was reached; a brief clockwise circumnavigation proceeded to the next check. It was then across the moat via a narrow path and into the precincts of the castle and across to the remains of the old cathedral, where the hounds took in some history from the info boards. The circumnavigation re-started taking the pack to the main entrance to the site. Were we nearing the end of the run? No the Hare had a sting in the tail for the pack as the new trail took the hounds anti-clockwise back around the path on the edge of the moat and then a very steep drop to the field below; the scene of the Hare’s earlier tumble! Once the base of the hill was reached it was a return clockwise and On Inn to the RV. In the pub Alimentarty complimented the Hare on a very good trail with sneaky loops causing both JM’s to be at the back at the pack at one stage and taking in some historical sites, all in 55 mins. RV: Rainbow’s End, Steeple Langford. HARE: On 3/Ember. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Alimentarty, Gt Expectations, Coke, Slowcoach, Dillon, Mad Hatter and Polly. Once the hounds had gathered in the car park, on a hot and sunny evening, the hare(s) called the pack to order and gave the brief, with junior hare apparently promising no hills, but more of that later! No horn this evening as 5 Minz had managed to sprain his ankle. Checking commenced and the ‘On’ was soon found heading west towards the village. Further checks followed at various road junctions taking the hounds into the centre of the village by the church. Nothing was found south along Duck Street and the ‘On’ was eventually called north out of the village and along a lane up to and under the A36 to a T junction. Was it to be downhill towards Berwick Lane? No instead it was west along a private road and a long pull up a hill (so much for no hills!) running parallel with the A36 towards Ballington Manor farm. After a good Km of steady running a further T junction was reached and the trail was quickly found heading south to the A36. The hounds then ‘diced with death’ in crossing the busy main road and then followed the nearby footpath signs that took them further south over a field and across one branch of the River Wylye. Much searching then ensued across the water meadow until the trail was eventually found and a second branch of the river was crossed. The trail then led across a field of poppies (and broad beans) up to the Wylye/ Langford Rd. It was then a long run east through Hanging Langford until the familiar sight of Willow Cottage was reached and who should be there outside to greet us but Angel Cake with some cold amber nectar and sustenance in the shape of crisps, dips and bratwurst mit brot. A toast was drunk to ‘absent friends’, much reminiscing took place and the Hon Pres was prevailed upon to give an ad hoc debrief. All too soon goodbyes and thanks had to be said to Angel Cake for such a splendid repast and the pack made its way back to the RV and a further nightcap in the pub. On On

RUN1552

RV: The Silver Plough, Pitton. Hare: On3. Hounds: Twin Rocks, Alimentarty, 5minz, Fakir, Mad Hatter and Polly. This extraordinary hash was laid on to commemorate, to the day, the 30th anniversary of the founding of the hash (Fakir did the honours with the self timer - a commemorative photo was duly obtained) and extraordinary it was, not least because On3 took the trail up the extraordinarily steep incline at the rear of the hostelry, and thence to extraordinarily untamed countryside. It was his objective to lay 30 checks. Did he? No, he didn’t. Could there have been 30 of anything else? Well, certainly there weren’t 30 hashers! We could try counting anatomical parts, for example, nipples or testicles, but 6 males and one female precludes the idea of using these particular features. Between the 7 hashers, we would have to find something with an average of 4.5, but it was highly improbable that every one of us had a half of anything, to go with the 4. So, males would have to have had 2, 3, 4 or 5 and the female 18, 12, 6 or none respectively, and that would be seemingly impossible. It could be suggested there were 30 toes on exclusively male left feet, but that would be unfair to the female. So, let’s try something other than body parts. What about drink? Did we collectively sink 30 pints? Well, no we didn’t. A more promising line of argument is that we might well have imbibed 30 alcoholic units, procured on one check, not on tick; and there could well have been 30 fewer of these little blighters left in the untamed countryside!

RUN1551

RV: The Royal Oak, Fritham. Hare: 5minz. Hounds: Twin Rocks, Alimentarty, Dillon, On3 and Polly. Hounds left to their own devices have a tendency to be openly irresponsible, and even blatantly unprincipled. It is conceivable any hash would be meaningless if it were it otherwise. On this occasion the rascal hounds pursued the hare in three waves. Twin Rocks, Ali’ and Dillon were first; then On3 joined them once they had attracted his wandering attention; and finally, Polly. How curious, then, the order of events that transpired. All, remarkably, returned to the RV within no more than a minute or two of each other. This was evidence for an obviously flagrant conspiracy which consisted in the enigmatic Polly, last to start, but who completed the unmarked trail first, ahead of the hare, yes, he pre-empted the hare; and also consisted in the surreptitiousness of the hounds chasing the hare. Obviously the hounds were scheming to run rings around the unassuming and unwitting hare (think again). Ali’ presented the critique, commenting on the slight detraction of the hare’s initial check after check in a straight line across the high, open heath (it’s only one foot in front of the other, after all, wherever you go), but this was mitigated by the hare’s choice of sun dappled dells and brooks in the woodland below. Ali’ declined however to reveal some secret that only the hounds were to know, in spite of prompting by his co-plotters. The hare knew, though, there would be trouble when he briefed that only easily recognisable tracks and paths would be used.

RUN1548

RV: Coombe Lane, Enford. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, On 3, Gt Expectations, Slowcoach, Polly, All’s Well, Mad Hatter and Dillon. In spite of the directions from the hare, where a left turn should have been a right, all the hounds seemed to make it to the RV along Coombe Lane on the edge of the plain; with army manoeuvres going on the background. It was also good timing as a heavy shower had just cleared the area as the hare set off to lay a hot trail. The hounds gave him five minutes and then they were off after him heading in a NW direction. The trail took the pack past various plantations of trees, more mature woods and a barn where the military were parked up having a breather from their exertions. Enroute to this point All’s Well took the opportunity to play with the parachute from a flare; boys will be boys at whatever age! At this point Polly could be seen arriving in the distance where the cars were parked but despite vigorous waving by various hounds it became obvious he hadn’t noticed us. The pack continued in a NW direction until Water Lane was reached and the trail turned NE along the lane and around a wood. Here the FRBs had a close encounter with a military tracked vehicle. The trail then swung round and headed back south-eastwards until some of the hare’s trademark double blobs were reached. Polly could be again seen in the distance but he was on a homeward leg and couldn’t be caught. On reaching a plantation that had been passed on the way out the trail seemed to go cold until Dillon found the trail again heading through the trees and On Inn back to the RV. At the cars there was a further encounter with two large armoured vehicles that came past to see what we were doing and got Gt Expectations all excited! In the pub On 3 gave the crit and thanked the hare for a splendid trail that had taken about an hour. On On

RUN1545

RV: Vernditch Chase, Martin Down. HARE: Hi Gang. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, 5 Minz, On 3, Coke Slowcoach, Fakir and Dillon. Fakir was welcomed by the pack after a long gap since his last hash. Two of the hounds arrived late to find the pack had already left, but the broad direction of the arrow left behind was followed and the hounds were soon intercepted in the middle of the wood. Fortunately by this time the hail that had greeted the pack at the start of the run had stopped. No fauna was apparent, unusually for this area, but the flora more than made up with the normal bluebells much in evidence, large swathes of wild garlic and later in the trail some wild purple orchids. Fakir had brought a camera and took some hash photos for posterity (see WH3 website) during the run. An old style back check was found. Coke was having difficulty in keeping her balance on the slippery track. The eponymous 'Vern ditch' was reached and crossed a couple of times and the woodland was traversed ignoring the paths; giving the hounds chance to sharpen their powers of observation while trying to find the flour. This also seemed to perplex the hare at times! Eventually the trail led the pack down to the road, then across it and up to the beehives in a woodland clearing; it was here the orchids were viewed. The hounds were then taken along a BMX track through the woods, no doubt to give Hi Gang the opportunity to try out his jumping skills, but he seemed reluctant to go for the highest jump; sensible man! Then it was On Inn back to the RV in about 65 mins. At the pub we were met by Sexy who joined us for a drink. JM 5 Minz gave the crit. There was some lively debate about the direction the arrow was pointing at the start and whether the two late hounds had followed the correct trail. But Slowcoach pointed out that either way the hounds had quickly found the pack. There was also a learned debate on whether the bluebells were of the English or Spanish variety; the majority opinion favoured English. Fakir was also taken to task for ignoring not one but two bars! Overall the hare was thanked for an excellent trail. On 3 was also congratulated for his London Marathon success on the previous Sunday. On On

RUN1544

RV: Queen's Head, Broad Chalke. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Coke Slowcoach, All's Well and Dillon. Two of the pack arrived a little late due to a horse box creating a slow convoy along the valley from Salisbury, so it was nearly 6:10 before the brief was given. This consisted of the Hare (looking like Joe 'Uncool' in his shades) telling the hounds that they were celebrating the Queen's birthday by using the RV of the Queen's Head and to look out for the 5 senses during the run. There were also a couple of places to watch out for short cutters. Then the pack was off, with the ON soon being found west along a path behind the houses. This path took the pack to the western end of the village. En-route the hounds passed a house with two sheep grazing in the garden; had they escaped from the field? No on second glance they turned out to be life size plastic ones! The trail then turned south down Knapp Hill and crossed the valley by the foot of the watercress beds (taste). Coke also took the opportunity to pat a horse at a field gate (touch). It was then up the side of the hill to the fields above which contained lots of pigs (smell) with squealing piglets (hearing) and great views across the valley (sight). On reaching a junction of two drover's tracks it was a sharp left turn and east back towards the village. This track took the pack on a long down hill run until the houses were reached. It was then another short climb to a triangle of tracks (the opportunity for short cutting) by the road to Martin (next week’s run). Finally the trail took the hounds in a loop along to the village hall and the church and across the water meadows back to the RV. In the pub Alimentarty gave the crit; he commented on the run and highlighted All’s Well misdemeanour of missing not one but two bars; one was to the left, one to the right and yet All’s Well carried straight on! Coke had also had a most unsuccessful evening finding virtually every false trail on the way round and for this reason she was awarded a ‘Down Down’. All in all this was a great trail that had taken 50 mins. However 5 Minz felt that after last week’s run this one was not messy enough! ON ON. More hares needed for May and June

RUN1542

RV: The Bull, Downton. HARE: Coke. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Slowcoach, On 3, Ember, All’s Well, Mad Hatter and Dillon. The second daylight run and the Hon Sec arrived early again; this is starting to become a habit! There were reports from the JMs that On3 was last seen in the Britford area running to the RV. Would he make it in time? Ember then arrived by car and said she hadn’t seen him; mysterious? After waiting to a little after 6:00 the hare was about to begin the brief and who should arrive but the aforementioned On3; so he wasn’t lost after all! We were then treated to a brief from the hare about laying the trail the previous evening in the rain and gathering gloom after a PB matching half marathon on Sunday; mad fool! The first check was quickly found south near Magna Mazda. It was then west into the housing estate opposite and across to Wick Lane. The new trail was quickly found east along the lane back towards the village. On reaching the main A338 local knowledge was soon proved right as the next trail was found opposite in Long Close. This took the pack past the recreation ground and into Gravel Close. Two options were available and the longer version had been chosen by the hare, as the pack was taken in a loop north along the lane and then south across the water meadows back into the village by the Avon Bridge at the end of The Borough. Another two options and this time it was west past the Co-op shop to a check by the White Hart pub. Finally the hounds were taken on a further loop, this time south past the Baptist Church, along the lane and around the edge of Trafalgar School’s playing fields and back to the main A338. It was then a short run north along the road to the RV. In the pub Hi Gang gave the crit; he commented that the run was rather like a ball on a piece of elastic, i.e. when it got to far away it was quickly brought back to the centre. There was also a strong claim to the shortest distance between two checks on a couple of occasions and some of the blobs had clearly been laid in the rain the previous evening in view of their faintness! Overall though he thanked the hare for a great trail with some good stretches for runners and congratulated her on her half marathon success! ON ON.

RV: The Plough, Durrington. HARES: Dillon/Alimentarty. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, 5 Minz, Slowcoach, Gt Expectations, Mad Hatter and a late appearance from All’s Well. After last week’s drenching in the dark it was a pleasure to gather in the car park on a light and dry evening! At the appointed hour the pack was called to order and the senior hare (Dillon) was asked for a brief. The hare wasn’t sure what to say and ‘dried up’; was another ‘down down’ going to be earned before the hash had begun? However after a little encouragement a satisfactory brief was forthcoming. After that excitement the ‘On’ was quickly found along Bulford Rd. The trail then turned right down a narrow track and the hares took us across to the High Street. As we approached this area a perspiring figure clad in Hi Viz yellow was noticed coming up behind. It could only be All’s Well running late and it was! The trail then took the hounds further west through the village until the recreation field, bordering the Netheravon Rd, was reached. We then had the ‘pleasure’ of trying a number of the fitness structures laid out in a circuit around the field. Boredom soon set in as we realised how unfit we were and the new trail was quickly found heading up to the Stonehenge Inn. After some diligent checking of all the various options at this location the ‘On’ was found heading down Stonehenge Rd back towards the centre of the village again. After lots of twists and turns the Bulford Rd was reached and the pack sensed the RV was in sight; but the Hares had a final sting in the tail as the trail turned right down Recreation Rd towards the leisure centre and school. A final loop then took the pack down to the river and then along Ham Lane and back round to the RV. In the pub Slowcoach gave the crit and thanked the hares for a fine trail that had included lots of checks and changes in direction and the added benefit of a try at the Fitness trail! ON ON.

RUN1536

RV: Brown Street Car Park. HARE: Hi Gang. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Twin Rocks, On 3, Gt Expectations, Coke, Ember, Slowcoach, Polly and Dillon. Bumass to the very idea in On3’s critique of a plea for intelligibly, in Hash Notes. The sublime and the divine were, however, pertinent to Hi Gang’s hash. A cardinal point for the vespertine hashers was a disused churchyard where sanctified water was reverently sprinkled on the unmarked graves. Witnessed at an iconic (graffitied) shrine in the public gardens was the emulation by Hi Gang of a BMXer. It was unpersuasive; he failed to complete the intended manoeuvre at the top edge of a ramp. It was once said that a priest trained his horse to start and stop respectively on command of “Praise the Lord” and “Amen”. One day, on a coastal bridleway, the horse took fright and galloped towards the cliff edge. The panicked priest yelled “Amen” just in time to stop the horse. But then, in relief, he raised his face heavenward and gave thanks for his salvation, chanting “Praise the Lord.” The horse had no chance of obeying the following expleted deletive. Of all the nerve, Hi Gang followed his come-uppance by daring the adventurous to cross the River Avon, at a check on its bank. At this point the river is deep and fast flowing, similar in situation to where it was said that a bishop, a dean and a deacon were attracted to a pub on the opposite side that served abbey ales. The deacon set off, walking on the water, followed by the dean who also walked on the water. The bishop was a little unsure but, if they could do it, so could he. He fell in. Thereupon, the dean said to the deacon, “Do you think we should have advised him of the submerged stepping stones?” All behind, Slowcoach was chasing the Hash from ahead, round about the roundabout close to Coke’s domicile. Close to The Close The Way was not The Close but The Friary. It has been said that some monks on missionary duty had been boiled in the pot here, but for one reason or another they were tough meat. The cannibalistic inhabitants had also tried baking them, roasting them, grilling them and marinating them. What they hadn’t realised was, these monks were Friars. From The Friary a splendorous view of the Cathedral was obtained, framed by awful apartments. Shrill blasts on the horn failed to tumble their walls, but brought the Hash together for the On Inn where On3 proclaimed thanks unto Hi Gang for his talents in presiding over the undertaking. RV: Coach & Horses, Winchester Street. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Alimentarty, Gt Expectations, Coke, Ember, On3, Slowcoach, Dillon and Polly. After last weeks excitement in the snow this was a more normal winters run laid live as usual by 5 Minz. However there were two hounds on bikes as Polly had brought his wheels and joined Hi Gang for a mounted hash. The pack gathered in front of the pub and after giving the hare a brief period of grace set off to try to catch him. The trail headed along the street to the ring road and then did a left turn along the path to The Greencroft. Here the pack became separated with On 3 and Polly searching Bourne Hill and the others searching the other side of the ring road. This was fortunate as it allowed Slowcoach, who had arrived late, the chance to catch up. Having exhausted the possibilities around Bourne Hill the hounds headed through the underpass to be met by Hi Gang who was searching for them. The rest of the pack was waiting along the Churchill Way at a check at the corner of Manor Rd. The next trail took the hounds to the St Marks underpass and after more checking it was found up St Marks Ave to the junction with Netheravon Rd. In true 5 Minz style the trail double backed and took the pack into the park that borders St Marks Ave. The hounds were sure that the hare must still be hiding in the park and a capture was possible. However what they didnt realise until too late is that a third entrance exists lower down, hidden by a parked van on the night, and the hare had escaped taking the pack back down St Marks Ave to the underpass again. The new trail was then found along Escourt Rd and Park Rd to Harrisons the Butchers, that marvellous meat emporium! The trail then took the pack along Wyndham Terrace; then via the College Street car park and along the path past the old St Edmunds School where Dillon tried to beat Hi Gang on his bike and On 3 in a race, without success! The trail then took the hounds back to the Salt Lane car park where most had parked. Polly was fortunate to find that in his earlier excitement at leaving on his bike he had left his footwear out in the car park, where the hare had found them on his return! In the pub Hi Gang gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an, always interesting, excellent winter trail that had taken about 45 mins. He noted that the other JM had narrowly escaped a down down for checking too quickly when the lost hounds had joined the pack at Manor Rd and it was unfortunate that the hare had evaded capture in the park. RV: The Old Mill, Harnham. HARE: On3. HOUNDS: 5 Minz, Alimentarty, Ember, Slowcoach, Dillon and a welcome late appearance by Wide Load. This was a run dominated by two events, the weather and Embers 18th birthday that day. The snow had been falling on and off over the previous two days but as the pack assembled there was a brief respite. The 3 Crowns was closed so the Old Mill was the alternative venue and its car park was treacherous with ice. The hounds were curious to discover how the Hare had marked the trail in the snow. Rather than such alternatives as coloured flour he had come up with an innovative approach by using strips of red & white striped safety tape tied to convenient points, such as lamp posts and fencing. Wide Load was due but was held up by traffic enroute so the Hare took his phone to keep in touch. After the brief the trail took the pack into Lower Street and then across the playing field to the Harnham Road and up Folkestone Rd towards the woods. It was then a circular tour of East Harnham taking in such sights as Wavell Rd and Bouverie Avenue; where an inspection took place of the site of the recent car crash on the bend how did they miss the lamp post? Regular updates from Wide Load revealed that she was held up by a crash near Firsdown. As the trail took the pack towards Coombe Rd the sleet started to fall. Once reached it was a double back via various roads to Bouverie Ave again and the Old Blandford Road; then into the woods on the ridge. By this time the sleet had turned to snow so it was a slippery descent through the woods to the recreation ground and a loop into the Parsonage Green area. Finally the trail took the pack across the Netherhampton Rd and along various footpaths to the church and back to the RV, where Wide Load had fortunately managed to make it and Fakir materialised in the Car Park to congratulate the birthday girl before disappearing into town en famille. In the pub Wide Load produced a card, cake and itunes vouchers for Ember from the Hash and the obligatory Happy Birthday was sung. Slowcoach gave the crit and thanked the Hare for a very well laid trail, particularly in the weather, which had taken about an hour. ON ON.

RV: Haunch of Venison. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Alimentarty, Twin Rocks, On3, Gt Expectations, Coke, Alls Well, Dillon, Slowcoach and Polly. After last weeks small gathering a large pack of hounds, for a winters evening, gathered under the poultry cross for a live trail by 5 Minz. It was nice to see Twin Rocks and Polly back; Polly with his chest in a much better state than last week and Twin Rocks fresh from her extended trip to Oz. After giving the hare 5 mins start the hounds were straining to be off and after a bit of checking the trail was found across the market square and heading in a northerly direction past the bus station. The Arts Centre was reached and the new trail was found past the contractors cabins and across College Street car park. It was then on on past the site of the old swimming pool and along College Street to a check opposite Harrisons the butchers, that excellent meat emporium visited last week. The hare was up to his old tricks hiding in the shadows for the new trail took the pack in a loop around the park and back to the previously visited car park. A quick double check and it was on past the old St Edmunds School and along Bedwyn Street, where Dillon wondered what the strange smell was, having just run past the fish & chip shop; it is obviously a sheltered life in the villages north of Salisbury! The hounds were then taken past the bingo hall to a check at the corner of Chipper Lane. Alls Well then checked up and down Endless Strt but no trail could he find until Gt Expectations pointed out the large double check by the bus stop he had just run past twice; eye test to be booked!!! The hare was clearly determined to visit the scene of last weeks near miss so the trail took the pack to St Anns Gate and into the cathedral close. The hounds refreshed their memory about the calendar change and headed along North Walk, and after a loop past Mompesson House out into the High Street. A final loop took the pack through Old George Mall across New Canal and back to the RV. In the pub the Hon Pres gave the crit and thanked the Hare for very enjoyable trail which had taken approx 50 mins. ON ON.

RV: Old Mill - Harnham. HARE: On3/Ember. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Gt Expectations, Coke, Polly, Dillon, All’s Well and Slowcoach. Mad Hatter avec heavy cold joined for the meal. Hash Words is not going to try to match last week’s cryptic ‘masterpiece’ from 5 Minz, so back to more mundane fare. As it approached the RV the pack was surprised to be deviated into a local yard under floodlights and security guards. Had we been rumbled at last? Fortunately not yet, as it was due to the nearby flood alleviation works closing the pub car park! However all this lighting and guarding proved too much for Polly who, still sober, proceeded to fall over an illuminated road sign! Having got over this excitement the pack gathered at the yard entrance for a brief from the hares, but it was so brief most blinked and missed it and so checking commenced. JM Alimentarty had dropped something heavy on his ankle (ouch!) the day before and so was walking wounded. The trail was picked up along the path around the churchyard and into the housing estate and onwards until the Netherhampton Rd was reached. Here Dillon diced with danger by trying to force the Hon Pres off the pavement whilst on his bike! After some debate and searching the trail was found across the road by the One Stop emporium. The hares then took us east along the main road and up into the Essex Sq area, where a photo opportunity was taken by Hash Flash at the best illuminated house in the area. Inevitably the trail took the pack into the woods and a climb up to the top of the ridge ensued. The hares then tested the patience of the hounds by laying some back checks; firstly on a path up into the nearby housing of East Harnham and then later, once the Old Blandford Rd was reached, by a long climb up the 149+ steps and back down again! Having gone far enough East the trail then took the hounds back along the woodland path and into Folkestone Rd. Here Dillon proved the sharpness of youth by asking where the check was; for it to be pointed out that he was standing on it! The hares then led us along Hollows Close and then abruptly left us to go home and get changed; telling us the trail was over and to follow the On Inn signs which is what the pack did. During the Christmas meal afterwards the On Sec was nominated to give the crit. Fortunately for the senior hare On Sec was in the Christmas spirit and decided against a well deserved down down for the aforementioned misdemeanours; reinforced by the bad jokes that the hare kept telling through the meal. Afterwards the senior hare claimed to be the holder of the shortest trail laying record as tonight’s had only taken 38 mins and it showed! ON ON.

RUN1524

RV: Parish Lantern, Whiteparish. HARE: Polly, HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Alimentarty, 5minz, On3, Ember, Coke, Dillon and All’s Well. Dillon had worked it out. That is to say he recognised and capitalised on role reversals to make headway in this Hash. Given a reversal, logical regression dictates there must be such a thing as a versal, this being the thing that was reversed. Now, versal and reversal could be rewritten as re0versal and re1versal respectively. (In this context re0versal should not be taken by the intelligent to mean universal.) Reordering and expanding into a general progression, the terms are re0versal, re1versal, re2versal, re3versal … renversal … reNversal, where the index N would be the number of checks. By definition, then, re0veral is a certain starting condition. Furthermore, it is possible that the versal of one Hash is the reversal of a previous Hash. Thus the sequence can, if one wishes, be expanded in the reverse of time to give re3versal, re2versal, re1versal, re0versal 'Dillon's realisation was that the re0versal of usual Hashes (the Hare and hounds) was the re1versal of this Hash. There are two permissible interpretations of re0versal here. One, the hound and hares, does not describe the facts but the other, Tortoise and hares, is acceptable. Provided the hares dallied just sufficient to allow the Tortoise to take the lead, then, roles having reversed, the Hare would show the hounds the way. It should be noted also that a notice saying beware of the bull presented another potential reversal, or, to put it more clearly, a retreat. The versal of retreat would then be ‘treat.’ The bull was not seen, but a kick from an electrified fence reversed All’s Well’s momentum in an instant, giving him an undesirable ‘treat’. In the critique the On-Pres thanked the Hare for the engaging trail, notwithstanding that contrary to the fable the hares outran the Tortoise to the finish. On-Pres then recertified 5minz for attaining 700 runs. The Quinta Ruban really was a desirable, lip-smacking, animal-gratifying treat. Thank you. ON ON.

RUN1522

RV: The Greyhound, Wilton. HARE: On 3/Ember. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Gt Expectations, Coke, Dillon, Polly, All's Well and Slowcoach. A hot trail laid by the awesome twosome! Based on a brief, that generally it would be one blob and ‘On’, the pack checked from the car park in the square only to find various trails with one blob and a bar, or just a bar. Needless to say confusion reigned! Eventually an anticlockwise loop was found taking the pack around the old church, across North Street and along a lane leading out onto West Street. The trail then took the pack in a further loop west along the street and then across the playing fields, where the blobs were in short supply, and back into North Street. Here the hounds were distracted by a bit of road rage to rival Hash Horn, caused by inconsiderate parking whilst in the ‘Chinese Chippy’. The cacophony was left behind as the route took the hounds north to the main A36 and then east to the roundabout. 5 Minz was convinced the Park & Ride must be beckoning but he was disappointed as the trail turned west along Fairview Rd and across to the sheep pens; where the hounds were advised to ‘Dip your Boots’ by various signs. Most did in the numerous large puddles! The A36 was eventually reached near the railway bridge and after more diligent searching the ‘On’ was found returning east to the junction with North Street again. After more searching double blobs were discovered directing the pack south along North Street. As the RV was approached the trail seemed to peter out and most of the pack, scenting the beer, headed for their cars to get changed. In the pub junior Hare revealed that senior Hare had brought a torch but left it in the car, no wonder there was a paucity of blobs in places, a heinous crime! On Sec read out further charges as the Down Down was ordered – 1. The senior Hare had blamed his junior partner for the ‘dodgy’ parts of the trail. 2. He had tried to ‘out blob’ a JM by going for a triple check that hadn’t worked. 3. He had swapped the blobs from side to side along the path without changes in direction (lack of torch?). 4. He hadn’t directed the pack at the end to find the last loop when interest was clearly waning and had accused the JM of not sounding his horn sufficiently so the hares knew where the pack was. JM (5 Minz) commented on the list of misdemeanours and awarded the senior Hare a well deserved Down Down. Continuing the theme of the evening the Hare then had the temerity to complain about the coldness of the drink, as an excuse for failing to down it in one and was very lucky to escape a further award! On On.

RUN1519

RV: The Butt of Ale, Sunnyhill Road. HARE: Slowcoach. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Twin Rocks, Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Dillon, All's Well and Polly (plus apparently a brief appearance by Fakir sans chausseure du course). The hare, having run from the pub a number of times before, decided that this would be a hot trail and that no recce was required. However what he didn’t know was that the pub, open earlier in the year, had succumbed to the credit crunch and was shut. This became apparent when trying to turn into the car park to be met by Heras security fencing! So it was a quick change in the road and off. In view of the cold and damp evening the pack didn’t hang around either and followed about 10 mins behind. Hi Gang, being on good trail finding form and fresh from his Far East jaunt to the Orient, led the pack down the hill and along Braemar Rise to Downsway. Here the hounds were assisted by a ‘helpful’ resident who told them the trail was along the footpath through the houses and up to Bishopdown. On reaching the path at the top of the steps the trail was found heading south towards St Marks School. At the corner of St Mark’s Ave and Cambridge Rd the trail turned right past the school and a loop was laid into the ‘Counties’ Estate ending up along the unmade Netheravon Rd back to St Marks Ave. The rain started to fall but fortunately it was light and short lived. It was then down the hill to the underpass at St Marks roundabout and into Estcourt Rd. A further loop was laid taking in Park Street and Queens Rd and over the foot bridge to the end of Campbell Rd. The trail then led the pack in a number of twists and turns via Victoria Rd, Castle Rd and Radnor Rd until St Francis Rd was reached and the ON INN signalled. The pack arrived back at the RV shortly after the Hare to be met by Polly, who had arrived late and decided to have a little run all of his own. Apparently Fakir had arrived at the same time but had then discovered he had forgotten his running shoes and so had beaten a hasty retreat. In search of a welcoming hostelry (i.e. one that was open) the pack repaired to the Old Castle. Hi Gang gave the crit. He regaled the pack with his encyclopaedic knowledge of Land Registry numbers in the Downsway area (apparently some of the lowest numbers to be found anywhere!) and thanked the hare for an excellent trail that had taken just under the hour. On On. More Hares required for November please

RUN1512

RV: The White Horse, Downton. HARE: Slowcoach. HOUNDS: Twin Rocks, 5 Minz, On 3, Mad Hatter, Dillon, Alls Well and Polly. Alimentarty was walking wounded again, recovering from his back op. This was a hot trail in view of the deluge earlier in the day. The hare was spied (by ON 3 during arrival) laying his blobs along The Borough so at 6:00 the pack headed out that way from the rear car park only to find Polly by the Co-op next door (always attracted to a shop!) wondering whether he had got the correct RV. However the hare had clearly sneaked back and the trail was found along the adjacent South Lane past the church. A check was reached by a stile and it was across the water meadow skirting the playing field of Trafalgar School. Twin Rocks confidently headed for a stile only to find it was a seat! At the far end of the playing field a path was reached which took the pack west along to the main Ringwood Rd. The trail then headed north along the road, past the school until the Mazda garage was reached. A further check and it was across the road and into the housing estate and a long loop around Catherine Crescent. Here Hash Horn was accosted by 2 female residents wanting to know what the horn was all about. Polly arrived on the scene and, like a good Englishman, took the safety first approach and apologised. In the meantime the trail was picked up heading west along a footpath to the end of Mesh Pond Lane. The trail then took the pack in a clockwise loop along various farm tracks; first west and then north, eventually reaching Wick Lane. It was then east along the lane past the leisure centre and back to the Ringwood Rd. After further checking the trail was found going east along Long Close until a check at the recreation park was reached. Although ON 3 found the short cut between the two entrances the pack diligently followed the loop around the park and back to the footpath. Finally Gravel Close was reached and it was ON INN in a southerly direction back to the RV. JM 5 Minz gave the crit and thanked the hare for a well laid trail that had taken about 50 mins.

RUN1511

RV: The Tally Ho, Broughton. HARE: Polly. HOUNDS: Twin Rocks, Hi Gang, 5 Minz, On 3, Ember, Slowcoach, Gt Expectations, Mad Hatter, Dillon, Jane and Mel (Spice Boy). Alimentarty was walking wounded, recovering from his back op. The pack assembled for a virgin lay at a virgin RV; the first run at Broughton by WH3. The Hare arrived clutching a bag of flour and reassured us that the trail was laid according to Wilton rules (a good job!) and introduced us to HOVH3 hound ‘Spice Boy’. As the RV was opposite the church the striking of six by its clock reminded the hash it should be off and so the voyage of discovery around the village began. The trail was first found SW along Queenwood Rd and then a sneaky switch to an alleyway along the backs of the houses, which brought the pack out at the junction with the Salisbury Rd. After studying the millennium monument on the green the trail was found heading NW along the main road. It was then back into the village and along a path, through an orchard and via the play park where ON 3 embarrassed Ember (not difficult being ON 3!) on the swings. Then it was out onto another road near the school. A quick check and the trail took the pack NE out of the village and then SE across fields to have a not too close encounter (fortunately) with a herd of water buffalo, especially as the bull was in the field where the hounds were expected to go! After that excitement it was back into the village and a pit stop at Chez Polly where the Hare had kindly laid on some slightly alcoholic refreshment. A tour of the extensive Polly estate then followed so that the extensive stone walling and old cars could be admired. The trail left the estate heading SE across the fields and past the local stud farm. A long (½ Km) climb followed up a drover’s track to Broughton Hill and an encounter with the Romsey Rd. While the pack got its breath back excellent views of the village were evident to the north with the time at 7pm. What goes up must come down and it was then a long ON INN down the hill and back into the village and a little diversion via the post office. Hi Gang gave the crit and thanked the hare for a very well laid trail that had kept us all guessing and taken about 75 mins. The ladies reminded us that they were back in force and had been in the lead at various occasions and first to some checks! Slowcoach was presented with his 500th run certificate and a bottle of something alcoholic. On On

RUN1509

RV: Black Horse, Hurdcott. HARE: Coke HOUNDS: Twin Rocks, High Gang, 5 Minz On 3, Ember, Slowcoach, Wide Load, Mad Hatter, Alls Well and Polly. The Hare in a selfless act, above and beyond the call of duty, had risen at some unearthly hour that morning to lay the trail before work. Fortunately, despite heavy showers during the day, some evidence of this sacrifice remained. Checking from the car park the trail was quickly picked up heading towards the village. It was then around the edge of the village and west along the lane to the local sewage works; no wonder the blackberries here tasted so good! Twin Rocks, despite her long lay off, was in good form and led the way NE, following the path across the fields. At the next check Slowcoach picked up the baton, unlike Team GB men's relay team in Beijing! The trail led further north across another field towards a bull and his ladies. Doubts on the suitability of wearing a red T shirt that day entered the Hon Sec's mind. Even 5 Minz decided discretion was the better part of valour and kept his horn quiet. Meanwhile further back the stars came out early for Polly, who showed the rest of the pack the ancient HOV tradition of head butting a tree! The bull was safely bypassed by all until approached by On 3 who tried to come between the bull and his concubines; big mistake!! However all eventually got safely past and the trail took the runners into the Winterbournes. Here Polly made use of the local shops for a 2nd week running; this time for a pack of frozen peas for the large lump swelling on his forehead! The trail then took the pack SE to the other side of the village and then a good run SW across a large field, keeping parallel with the railway line. 5 Minz had left the pack to escort Polly back to the RV and so the horn had been passed to On 3 to practice with; another big mistake!! The trail then skirted the village taking the pack SW past the school, along various alley ways and then over the main road and across the fields, following the footpath, back into Hurdcott village. It was then On Inn back to the RV. On 3 gave the crit and thanked the hare for a very well laid trail that had taken about an hour. Ember was congratulated at doing so well in her A/S levels. On 3 was then presented by the Hon Pres with a bottle of single malt in recognition of reaching his 400 runs last week.

RUN1506

RV: The Swan, Stoford. HARE: On 3 HOUNDS: High Gang, Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Slowcoach, Dynarod, All's Well, Mad Hatter and Polly. The Hare greeted us with the news that he had only just laid the trail and so all should be well with the blobs and it was checking from the car park. The On was called SE along the main A36 to the turning to Gt Wishford. Those who thought it this way were wrong as the trail continued along the A36 to the cricket field. A swift check and the trail was picked up around the boundary; just as well as the local team were limbering up on the square for an evening match. It was then into Wishford village and under the railway line. Would the hare be tempted to take us up to Grovely Woods? No, the trail took the pack NW, parallel to the line and back into the village by the Royal Oak. It was then NW along the minor road towards the Langfords to a check seemingly in the middle of nowhere. After diligent searching and a hint from the hare the trail was found heading back along the river bank and into a field. After more searching the trail was picked up heading east across the field to Manor farm, at the edge of the village. The trail then took the pack north along a farm track towards Little Wishford and the A36. It was then across the main road and a ‘cheeky’ little climb up to the highest point of the hash overlooking the valley. What goes up must come down and the trail then took the pack SE down the main track and back to the RV. High Gang gave the crit and thanked the Hare for a grand trail that had taken about 50 mins. It being quicker this evening because of the lack of gossiping women!! On On.

RUN1500

RV: Red Lion, East Chisenbury. HARES: 5 Minz, Slowcoach & Gt Expectations. HOUNDS: High Gang, Alimentarty, Tiny Tim, Twin Rocks, Dynarod, Baggy Trousers, All's Well, Wide Load + 3 Junior hashers, Fakir, Dillon, On 3, Ember and Paul Johnson. The hounds arrived in the RV car park to be greeted by a pub sign saying Pub closed - private party! Had we got the wrong day? No in fact the pub had been closed for lunch for WH3's BBQ! It was great to see a number of old faces, particularly past Hon Pres Tiny Tim (& wife Sue), past JM Twin Rocks, Baggy Trousers and occasional guest hasher Paul Johnson. At the appointed time Hash Flash assembled the throng and photos were taken in the garden. Hash Flash then gathered the junior hounds and walkers (Pat, Mary Anne and Sue) for a hash with a difference. Meanwhile the Hares gave a short brief about Wilton Rules and it was checking from the car park. Tiny Tim wasn't to be fooled by false trails and quickly found the check at the entrance to the Priory. It was then On into and through the Priory grounds and along to the entrance to the Gladiator's Walk. Hopes for a learned talk on this by our past Hon Pres were dashed when he admitted he hadn't researched the area! A further check was found along the road near Littlecott House and the trail was then picked up heading east along a path that took the pack to the other end of the aforementioned Walk. The trail then continued east crossing a steep little valley backwards and forwards until the intersection with a military road. This road was followed in a NW direction until a copse was reached. The trail left the road and continued around a copse, avoiding cunningly hidden barbed wire, and back to the road. The trail then left the road and following a sheep track in a series of zig zags, headed west down a steep bank into another small valley. Most of the pack felt the On must be down the valley but had to be called back when the correct On was called along a parallel footpath heading SW. This took the runners to the main road at the edge of the village. The trail then took the pack down a path and SW along a small tributary of the Avon and ON INN to the RV. Just in time for the food Coke arrived feeling somewhat under the weather! Hon Pres High Gang gave the 'crit'. He reminisced that WH3 was 29 years old and felt it was a tribute to many former hashers how it had survived over the years. In particular a toast was drunk in memory of Dancing Brave who had done more than most to keep the Hash going at times. He thanked the Hares for an excellent trail, expertly laid, that had something for everyone. Here's to the next 1500! On On.

RUN1504

RV: Hook & Glove, Farley. HARE: High Gang. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Slowcoach, Phil, All's Well and Luke. No strange creatures tied to people's gateposts in Farley this week, only on the way through Pitton. Is this another custom spreading across the Atlantic? The JM gave a short brief and it was checking from the car park. Slowcoach picked up the first check at the gate into the field. 5 Minz then led the checking across the field into the lane, but there was silence from the horn; was this the correct way? The game was given away by the hare heading in that direction. The road was reached accompanied by complaints from the JM on the difficulty of finding blobs and spotting the check in the sunlight! Dark mutterings from the Hare! Then it was a short run west along the road to a check by a stile. Slowcoach picked up the trail into the field and then south across to the high street. After diligent search the On was called west along the road to a check at the X-roads. Was it to be back into the village; no the trail was found SE along the Grimstead Rd. After a long stretch the chicken farm was reached. This was protected by locked gates and No entry signs. Was the pack to be deterred? No of course not and the trail was found along the path through the farm and into Farley Copse. A stretch of shiggy was then negotiated as the path took the pack east through the woodland to Ben Lane. A check at the roadside and All's Well found the next trail heading into Blackmoor Copse. The pack then navigated various paths as the trail led NW through the Copse until the chicken houses of Farley Farm were reached. While some checked towards Hound Wood the On was called west towards the village. In true High Gang style a little loop was then put around the small copse which led to a glorious run across a wheat field with the village ahead bathed in sunlight. It was then a series of clever little trails, using the footpaths in that area of the village, to take the pack back to the RV; via someone's back garden and their compost heap! At the pub Slowcoach gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent trail that had taken about 65 mins. A naming ceremony took place for Phil Dynarod and Luke!

RUN1502

RV: Firing Range below Kiwi Sign, Bulford. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, High Gang, Gt Expectations, Slowcoach, Coke, Mad Hatter, Phil, Ember, On 3, All's Well, Wide Load, and Luke. An excellent turn out with two new hounds joining tonight; Phil Fisher a colleague of Slowcoach and Luke, Alimentarty's grandson, the David Bailey of last week's run. The Hare having just returned from a months hols, sorry business trip, to the US, it was a live trail. The JM gave a short brief on behalf of the Hare, who had departed some minutes previously, and it was checking across the Tidworth Rd. Some hounds immediately headed for the badge but the trail was found heading SW along a track at the base of the hill, At the next check the fitter ones checked left up the hill convinced it must now be towards the Kiwi badge, only to be called back again as the trail continued SW taking the pack into the woods and then on a loop back to the track. The trail then led to the edge of the nearby Army MQ estate. Here All's Well, in a fit of enthusiasm, headed further along the access road, only to be called back as the ON was called 180 deg in the opposite direction back into the wooded area. The trail then took us in a loop back to the MQ estate, around Auckland Rd, the aptly named Kiwi Rd and along to The Crescent. It was then back into the woods and the earlier track was reached again; where the Hare's inimitable double checks became evident. The pack felt that the Hare was teasing them with the Kiwi badge being so close, but so far. Hon Pres started making dark mutterings about a 'down down' being awarded if the badge was not visited soon! The pack was not to be disappointed any longer however and the trail then led up and up towards the ridge, with the badge on the left until a check was reached at the edge of a wooded area near the summit. Here Hash Flash took advantage of a photo opportunity. A number of hounds then visited the badge while the ON INN was called back down the hill and along a track to the NE of the badge, which led back to the Tidworth Rd and the range car park. At the pub Alimentarty gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent trail that had taken about 50 mins, including photo stop.

RUN1501

RV: Rose & Crown, Bulford. HARE: Alimentarty. HOUNDS: Gt Expectations, Slowcoach, Coke, Mad Hatter, James, Roland + Holly, David. The hare and two hounds were gathered in the pub car park with 18:00 approaching when numbers were doubled at a stroke with the arrival of the intrepid airmen from Middle Wallop. They had also brought along David a new hasher (apparently kidnapped from the mess), together with Holly the lurcher. Mad hatter joined the throng and after a short brief from the hare, for the benefit of the new hound, checking commenced. The trail across the field seemed the favourite, but no that was too obvious and a check was called instead at the end of Watergate Lane. It was then west along the lane and back across the field to the church. Here a passer-by mentioned to the pack that some strange lady was looking for runners. The Hare ever hopeful went in search and in the meantime Hash Flash took a photo opportunity at the bridge. The pack set off again along Water Street and then lo and behold the Hare appeared with Coke who had been delayed. The trail went in a loop back to Church Lane (Coke needn't have rushed) and then north along the lane and into a field; where the new hound encountered his first back-check! The trail then took the pack east across the field to the Milston Rd and then south towards the village. A check on the junction and the new trail was picked up NE along the Bulford Rd. It was then west past the cycle park following the stream and a further photo opportunity on stepping stones; with the Hare's grandson, who had been playing nearby, doing the David Bailey impression. The trail then took us into and around the housing estate and east along Churchill Avenue. Finally it was into and back through the woods towards the old PSA offices, then down to the filling station and ON INN to the RV. Coke gave the crit and thanked the Hare for a great trail that had taken about an hour, allowing for photo stops.

RUN1497

RV: Silver Plough, Pitton. HARE: High Gang. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, Wide Load, Slowcoach. It was a small but select gathering for High Gang's last trail before his summer jaunt to the Alps on a lovely evening. However in view of the heavy rain earlier that day the Hare’s brief about water and mud under foot was not surprising. A check was called and the pack was off in an anti clockwise loop around the village starting along ‘The Green’, next to the RV; then down a narrow path to the bus stop in the High Street. It was then a zigzag across to and up ‘Black Lane’; then west along ‘Above Hedges’ to ‘White Way’ opposite the village school. The trail then took the pack SW along Slate Way towards the Clarendon estate. The fun then started as the trail led south climbing up a slippery bridleway and then NE along ½ Km of waterlogged and very muddy track until the Farley road was reached. Those with a little bit of local knowledge started to check towards Pitton, but no the ON was called heading SE towards Hound Wood. However before the wood was reached the trail turned left along the edge of a field and across to another waterlogged and very muddy track. It was then a ‘paddle’ NW up this track to the equestrian centre on the ridge overlooking Pitton. Finally it was SW along the lane by the centre and then down White Hill back to the RV; in just under the hour. For the ‘crit’ the JM thanked the Hare for a very good trail that although it had been wet and muddy in places had been enjoyable and had given Wide Load plenty of exercise as she kept finding the ‘falsie’!

RUN1496

RV: The Shoe Inn, Plaitford. HARE: Slowcoach. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, 5 Minz, On 3, High Gang, Ember. Note that this hash was from The Shoe. On3, driven by Ember, evidently considered the Red Rover (further along the road) initially a better prospect. Torrential Spring Bank Holiday rains the day before had saturated the New Forest commons so the Hare judged that this had to be a live lay. A discarded shoe left at a bog had produced pious consternation. Could this shoe have been the vestige of the Hare’s dissension? Bets on his uni-ped progress were not offered though On3 had earlier taken bets that Hi Gang would pedal across a rickety footbridge. Hi Gang’s customary polished self-assurance however had been demolished earlier, un-witnessed, by a bramble that had thrown him and muddied his shirt. On that theme, Alimentarty too, was cast into the mire; explained in his case by a delaminated sole. Back at the RV 5 Minz thanked the Hare for this memorable hash, if merely for the only known occasion of an extensively dispersed pack having advanced between a pair of widely spaced checks without anyone seeing any blobs. N.B. Mrs Alimentarty has now binned the offensive trainers.

RUN1495

RV: The Plough, Durrington. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Wide Load, Slowcoach, Mad Hatter, High Gang, Gt Expectations, Running Late, Olivia, Roland & Holly the Lurcher. Another very good attendance on a cool spring evening; the numbers being swelled by the return of JM Alimentarty from his extended sick leave and, after a gap of 4 years, Running Late; visiting nearby HQSAAVn on a course. The Hare tried to give the brief about the trail and Wilton rules but some of the hounds were too busy quizzing Alimentarty on his holiday, the cause of his deep tan (2 weeks in Cyprus!). A check was called and the trail took us first south and then east towards the school. The On was then called north up to the lane bordering the Avon and east into the woods where a time out was called while Hash Flash assembled the pack (like herding cats!) for a photo opportunity on a tree sporting Bracket fungi. There was some discussion about its edibility but Wide Load declined to try it, spoilsport! We then headed towards Milston but a long back check brought us back to where we started. It was then On up a steep bank and across a field. Hon. Pres took the intelligent line and went round the road on his bike. Eventually Brigmerston was reached and the pack took the brave tablets and went through Mr Angry’s garden without mishap. It was then south across the fields and back towards Durrington. Here some active recruitment took place with two lady runners who had been accosted enroute earlier and made the mistake of crossing the path of the hash again! All too soon it was On Inn back to the RV. In the pub the Hon Pres gave his first presidential address to the assembled multitude. He welcomed Running Late and good wishes were asked to be passed on to Mrs Running Late, aka Nightingale. Alimentarty was saluted for reaching the milestone of 700 runs; the whisky being already presented and drunk in Dec 06, a certificate was promised in due course when a template was located. In between all this the Hare was complimented on an excellent run that had taken just on the hour.

RUN1494

RV: Hare Warren Wood nr Wilton. HARE: Coke. HOUNDS: 5 Minz, Wide Load, Slowcoach, Mad Hatter, Ember, On 3, All's Well, Robin, James, Roland & Holly the Lurcher. An exceptional attendance on a warm spring evening for a Virgin Lay, including two new recruits (James and Roland plus Holly), picked up by Wide Load at the local baths! After a disturbing brief by the Hare that she had had to give up at 21:30 in the gathering dusk the previous evening (how long was this Hash going to be?) and that it would be a part live trail while she finished it off! The hare then led us westward along the old drove road as that part of the trail wasn't laid! What then followed in fact was an excellent trail which took the pack to the junction with the Portfield Rd and across into Bishopstone Down woods; here the Hare left us to complete the trail. It then became a long clockwise loop, enlivened at one point by new hound James trying to jump a large waterlogged track and failing! Eventually the pack led by 5 Minz and Slowcoach headed back to the main road and across into Hare Warren. Some fun was had on a see saw (part of the bike track) by the new hounds; boys will be boys! Holly was still raring to go at each check which is more than could be said for some of the pack! The Gingerbread Cottage was reached and the trail turned south and back to the drove road. Here the Hare had taken a leaf out of the 5 Minz Hash book of trail laying and a double check was espied. It was then a loop in the wood and a long On Inn back to the car park. The pack then repaired to the V&A at Netherhampton, or at least some of the pack did! The Hare and Robin (in Coke's new MX5) and the new hashers were nowhere to be seen; did they know something we didn't, had they decided to have a party on their own?! No apparently not as they arrived blaming either Japanese technology, or was it navigator error? A likely story! The JM gave the crit and complimented the Hare on an outstanding virgin lay that had taken just on the hour for about 5Km.

RUN1493

RV: The Wheatsheaf, Lower Woodford. HARE: Hi Gang. HOUNDS: 5 Minz, Wide Load, Gt Expectations, Mad Hatter. Checks; we all know what they are. But negative checks, as in 'I don't do checks' this was something new. To check the accuracy of this claim the Hare decided to monitor the Hounds' dedication by quietly allocating scores; one point for on-on and finding the next check and half-a-point for on-on but overrunning the check. Great Expectations amassed lots of points, Wide Load some, Mad Hatter a few, and 5Minz not so many, mostly halves. Evidently, I don't do checks actually did do checks. In summary we checked up the road, down the road, once around a field, twice in the middle of the same field, and down Snaky Hill. Wide Load complimented the virgin On-Pres on his entertaining lay. Afterwards, what was really amusing was Hi-Gang's realisation that he'd not checked the whereabouts of his bag. Fortuitously, the barmaid knew where he had left it. And then, on his departing, the barmaid had to remind him to pay his cheque!

RUN1492

RV: The Bell, Winterbourne Stoke. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, On 3, Wide Load, Slowcoach, Gt Expectations, Mad Hatter, All's Well. The pack gathered in the pub car park on a very wet and dank evening to see 5 Minz disappearing on his way with a parting request for the pack to give him 5 mins start! A few mins after 6.00 the off was called; Gt Expectations and All’s Well headed north along the track through Manor Farm. The rest of the pack searched around the village along every conceivable path and road, including braving various crossings of the A303. After a while it dawned on the pack that as the other two hounds had not returned perhaps they were on the right track and so the pack headed north too! With one brief check the trail led NE for 1.2 Km until the Foredown Barn complex was reached. Here the pack was eyed suspiciously by a Charolais bull, which was fortunately separated from them by two farm gates! More searching and the trail was found NW towards Shrewton. As the trail headed along the high ground the Hare was spied hiding in the trees in the valley to the SW waiting for the pack to go behind a hedge. A further check was reached and the trail turned SW towards the sewage works and the River Till. It was then an exciting crossing of the river via a loose single plank bridge and a soggy paddle along the water meadows until Foredown Barn was reached again. The pack led by Slowcoach thought it must be back down the track they had come up, but no the On was called along the track heading SE towards the A303. After a paddle along the farm track it was a long climb up to meet the A303. There was then a parting of the ways; half the pack took the intelligent line and headed down the verge of the main road towards the RV while the other half led by On 3 doubting the hare would have laid it in a bramble lined ditch, went into the field opposite to find the trail. Wrong, it was in the ditch! Eventually all arrived back at the RV as another heavy shower started. In the pub Slowcoach gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an ingenious trail that had taken just over the hour for about 5.7Km. He also announced a reorganisation of the Hash with High Gang becoming On Pres, 5 Minz Joint Master and Gt Expectations Religious Adviser; while he was becoming On Sec. Alimentarty will rejoin on the 20th May after his holiday

RUN1491

RV: St Barbara's, Larkhill. HARE: On 3 HOUNDS: Wide Load, Gobbler, Hoi Sin Following the above service an impromptu hash was run as a tribute to Alan. On 3 came prepared with flour and cunning plan. Due to the late notice not all hounds came prepared and others had excuses, like, work! After giving the hare a few minutes head start the pack gave chase from the car park outside the church, and having seen the direction of the hare's departure, got off to a good start. Assistance was shortly given by a driving instructor and passengers who had spied the hare's passing. Leaving the delights of the patch behind the hounds headed east on track and trail, through wood and country, encountering other hounds that, apparently, ate joggers! Hashers, please! With the hare laying a cunning trail the hounds had a sense of deja vu as after looping back to head west, they were back retracing their steps with double checks and blobs. The hare, having managed not to be caught and suffer the fate of hares that are caught , namely, well, I don't know, but I'm sure it would be cruel and nasty, then joined the pack for the run-in. After a run lasting 50mins the hare and hounds retired to the local hostelry, conveniently the opposite side of the car park from the church where subs were collected and a crit was presented by Wide Load who thanked the hare for a wonderful lay. It was then, surprise, surprise, sausage, egg and chips all round! On On.

RUN1490

RV: Vernditch Chase (Queen's Head, Broad Chalke). HARE: High Gang. HOUNDS: Fakir, Gt Expectations, Wide Load, Gobbler, 5 Minz, Ember, On 3, Slowcoach, Mad Hatter. The pack gathered at the RV, NE corner of Vernditch Chase, in a sombre mood and discussed the sad passing of Dancing Brave on 19th April. The hare then gave a brief and the pack was off in search of the trail. Some guidance was needed from the Hare to locate it across the road. Various flora (orchids, wild garlic, etc) was noted by certain members of the pack. This seemed to distract the Hare who nearly ran over the said flora with his bike and then became briefly disorientated! The trail was however re-located and it was back to the road. 5 Minz who had arrived late had not appeared so the Hare went to look for him. Meanwhile the pack headed up into the wood only to find the errant hound at the next check; having taken the intelligent line he had got their first! We were then joined by the Hare accompanied by Fakir. The rest of the run around the Chase (including a stop at the 'gate to nowhere') was enlivened by interludes for hash photos led by Hash Flash (Gt Expectations), who insisted on trying to stand her camera on any piece of wood readily to hand, be it tree branch or twig, to use the timer. The Hare then gave us the highlight of the run by somersaulting off his bike into the shiggy while trying to race On 3! At the pub a toast was drunk in Dancing Brave's memory and the JM complimented the hare on a very well laid trail, as befitting a past JM, that had taken about an hour.

RUN1489

RUN 1489 – The Old Mill, Harnham HARE: Fakir. HOUNDS: High Gang, Gt Expectations, Coke, 5 Minz, Ember, Newshound, On 3, Slowcoach As the pack gathered an old hound was spied milling about; yes it was Newshound (on loan from the Portsmouth Hash) swelling the ranks of the family Cole for tonight's run. The trail was quickly picked up along the path opposite the end of Town Path and around the church. It then meandered through the housing estate, where High Gang was spied disregarding local byelaws (as retired solicitors do!) banning the riding of bikes along footpaths. It was then west along the main road and south up Carrion Pond Drove to the edge of the quarry at the base of Harnham Hill. The ‘on’ was called and the pack climbed east up the path to the edge of the fields and then south over Harnham Hill to a check at the field corner. It then turned east across the field to the rear of the houses forming Harwood Rd and then around to Old Blandford Rd. Here the brothers Cole insisted on finding a back check, while the rest of the pack ignored them and took the intelligent line. The trail then led us in various circles around East Harnham taking in Bishops Drive, the 147(?) steps up to Bouverie Avenue and Francis Way. Eventually the main Coombe Bisset Rd was reached but not for long as the trail doubled backed west into Highlands and Wavell Rd. Eventually the Harnham Rd was reached and it was ON INN across the playing field to the RV. At the pub On 3 gave the crit and complimented the hare on a well laid trail that had taken just over the hour!

RUN1488

RV: The Winterbourne Arms, W/bourne Dauntsey. HARE: Slowcoach. HOUNDS: High Gang, Gt Expectations, Coke, 5 Minz, All’s Well, Gobbler, On 3. No words rec’d from 5 Minz so here goes. Hot trail laid by the hare. Trail was picked up left out of the pub car park and along to the post office. The trail then led NW along the lane to the ford where rumour has it that Gobbler, deciding his trainers were mucky from last week, went for a paddle! Further on a check was reached by a stile and the trail then turned SW across the fields and various crossings of the River Bourne until Hurdcott was reached. It was then SW through the hamlet and SE towards the main road. However at a check before the road the trail turned NE across the fields back towards the Winterbournes. At the road various ‘sheep’ went searching along the road while the trail crossed over and followed a path NE along to the school. It was then past the school and along to the village hall. The trail then turned SE towards the railway line but at a path junction turned left and headed NE across the fields and then NW back into the village. The main road was reached and the pub was in sight after only 50 mins. But then the sting in the tail came. In true '5 Minz' style a double check was reached and the trail took the pack on a second visit to the ford and across the fields in a short loop which led back into the village and ON INN to the RV just on the hour. At the pub High Gang gave the crit and complimented the hare on an expertly laid Joint Master’s trail, particularly the final loop that had taken them partly around the village again!

RUN1487

RV: The Wyndham Arms, Dinton. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: High Gang, 5 Minz, All’s Well, Gobbler, Slowcoach. High Gang arrived at the car park and wondered if he had the right RV as no one was there. Fortunately other hounds gradually arrived, followed by the Hare in a cloud of dust just before 6.00. A quick brief about Wilton rules, but nothing about major areas of shiggy; more of that later. The trail was quickly picked up east along the road and then SE down a track towards the railway and river. Major areas of shiggy were negotiated by foot and bike. The railway crossing was reached. A back check and faint sign was observed saying something about ‘April Fool’!! So it was all the way back through the mud, accompanied by much chuntering. In the meantime Gobbler had joined the pack. The trail was then picked up across the road heading north up to Manor farm. Then it was through the farmyard to be greeted by various barking dogs, across the field and around in a neat loop back to the farm entrance again. The trail led through the farm yard opposite and west across a field; then up a path and further west along the base of the beech hanger and finally a long climb (with more shiggy) up to a cross roads at the top of the ridge, close to Marshwood farm. Then it was down Steep Hollow lane back to the village and past Philips House. The trail was then picked up along a path which led east across the fields to a housing estate. Finally the trail led south through the housing to the main road and then back to the RV. At the pub High Gang gave the crit; after having some reservations during in the early part of the run he had come to the conclusion that it was an excellent trail that had taken about an hour. Slowcoach was awarded a ‘down down’ for whinging too much about the trail and the conditions under foot!

RUN1486

RV: The Lord Nelson, Middle Winterslow. HARE: High Gang. HOUNDS: 5 Minz, Fakir, Ember, On 3, Slowcoach. After assembling in the car park High Gang gave the brief about the trail being laid the day before and 25 checks; was this an excuse for missing blobs and an overlong trail? Before this could be queried too much the off was called and the pack then spread far and wide searching; the trail being picked up at the back of the pub, NE along the path towards Middleton Rd by Slowcoach. After much calling and a return towards the RV the pack finally appeared but the hare had then to go and find 5 Minz who had done his usual disappearing act! The trail then became a typically intricate, challenging, High Gang trail. It contained much variety, an attempt to match 5 Minz’s shortest check distance from last week and some different routes. Overall the trail led the pack across the field bordering the road, through the village hall car park (where 5 Minz disappeared briefly again) through the Saxon Lees housing estate, along The Causeway and the field to the play park, then in a SE direction down Witt Rd, where a check seemed to have disappeared and was quickly re-laid! Then it was west up the familiar bridle path and north along to the barn on Weston Lane. The trail was picked up heading west along the lane to and across Barry's (sports) Fields to the gate by the path in the north corner. Finally it was NW along the path and ON INN to the RV. At the pub Fakir gave the crit. He congratulated the hare on an excellent run that had taken 57, or was it 58 mins?

RUN1484

RV: The Old Castle - Old Sarum. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: Coke, Robin, Gobbler, 5 Minz, High Gang, Slowcoach. The pack arrived just before 6:00 to see a worried hare, who was beginning to think he had laid the trail only for himself and 5 Minz. After some initial skirmishing in the car park and hints by the hare the trail was eventually picked up by Slowcoach heading upwards to Hilltop Way. Then it was back down, eventually to Castle Road. A brisk crossing of the road and the trail was picked up by 5 Minz heading firstly E along the road then SE via the Rugby Club training ground to Fairfield Rd and then down again to Stratford Rd. A check and High Gang picked up the trail along Hudson Rd to the Avon Valley path. A bit more checking and the trail led the pack back to Stratford Rd. The trail was then found NW up the drovers track towards the RV. However a stile was reached and Slowcoach picked up the trail going west across a field to the base of Old Sarum and a very strange check! At this point Gobbler decided that the trail was not exciting enough and commenced a long domestic call on his mobile; more of that later. What goes down has to go up and the trail then took the pack up and around Old Sarum, taking in the foundations of the old cathedral and finally ON INN. Back at the pub the JM gave the crit. He awarded a down down to Gobbler for having the temerity to use his mobile while hashing and congratulated the hare on an excellent run that had taken just on the hour for 2.5 miles.

RUN1480

RV: The Three Crowns Harnham. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: Ember, 5 Minz, Wide Load, Slow Coach, Fakir, Alls Well, Coke, Dancing Brave and a first timer, Simon Watson, alias Gobbler. The pack RVd at the Three Crowns at Harnham, which is always a bit of a problem as far as parking goes. To see double figures attending for some time was most encouraging. The trail was quickly picked up heading in the direction of the Harnham Rd with Slow Coach, Alls Well and Fakir leading as the trail was navigated by the remaining hounds. The trail then headed up Harnham Hill in the direction of the old chalk pit. At this juncture there was a sneaky back check which somewhat split up the runners. However, all met up again, including Alls Well, Coke and Wide Load and headed East along the ridge, with the exception of Dancing Brave, who was advised, because of his bike, to remain at the lower level. A good idea at the time and afterwards: considerably less effort and he had the benefit of listening to the racket made by the pack in the clouds above him. However, what goes up must come down and WH3 descended to the Harnham Rd via Folkestone Rd. A number of checks by the former Winery and it was soon On Inn across the recreation ground to the pub. Back at the pub Slow Coach gave the crit. He welcomed Gobbler to the run and congratulated the hare on an excellent run that had taken just about an hour.

RUN1479

RV: The Duck - Laverstock. HARE: Slow Coach. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, 5 Minz, Wide Load, Nicola (Coke) and Vicky (Robin). The pack RV'd at that well known venue; the Duck at Laverstock. As clocks/watches inched towards six and the Hare had not yet put in an appearance, WH3 was getting somewhat apprehensive. The Hare appeared eventually and whatever fears that the pack had were allayed. The trail was picked up heading West along Duck Lane ending up at Petersfinger. Led by Wide Load and 5 Minz the trail headed over the bridge towards Shady Bower. It then meandered along Millfield Hollow, Elm Grove and Elm Rd to the underpass to Greencroft. The pack then hit Escourt Rd ending up at the Wyndham Arms. Here the train split up never to meet up again on the run. Dancing Brave, 5 Minz, Coke and Robin, the first four coaches, headed NW down College Rd, but lost the trail completely and eventually headed back to the Wyndham Arms, where the other three coaches had disappeared off the face of Salisbury and the planet for that matter. The three coach element, led by Slow Coach then headed back to the pub along Queens Rd, Bishopdown and across the water meadows to the pub. However, the four coach contingent, beat them back to the pub, going via St Marks roundabout and back to the pub along Wain–a–Long Rd. The crit was duly delivered, an unusual split train run was discussed in detail and the Hare was thanked for his efforts.

RUN1471

RV: Brown St Car Park. Apres the Froth Blowers Arms - Milford St. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Wide Load, Great Expectations, Slow Coach, Hi Gang and Alls Well. As the pack assembled on a cool and damp evening some concern was expressed at the lack of a Hare. Fortunately with less than 5 Minz to spare the hare arrived, closely followed by Slowcoach. After a short wait to allow the hare to get a heads start and Slowcoach to change, the pack headed off and found the trail south along Catherine Street towards the White Hart. What then followed was a typical 5 Minz trail through the Cathedral Close to the Harnham Gate into Churchill Gardens, across to the College and the end of Tollgate Rd. Some difficulty was experienced by Hi Gang in finding the trail from there until Wide Load pointed out that the blobs were strategically placed between the legs of the symbol of the man on the pavement; as Hi Gang said when the check was reached by Homebase, what a load of b***ls that was! The trail then headed north to Waterloo Rd, along Marina Rd, through St Martins churchyard and then to the underpass. A quick check and it was on through the tunnel to St Ann's Street, up Exeter Street and Catherine Street and back to the Car Park. At the Froth blower's Arms, a new venue for WH3, the JM thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken just over 45 mins. On On. To help secure lottery funding for a new cycle way across Salisbury the following net address www.sustransconnect2.org is included on the HARELINE. Please log on and vote please.

RUN1469

RV: The Old Castle Inn - Old Sarum. HARE: On 3 HOUNDS: Wide Load, Dancing Brave, 5 Minz, Hi Gang, Ember, All's Well and Slow Coach. Seven turned up and seven set off just after six. It was dark and raining, usual for this time of the year. The trail headed up the track behind the pub and into the hill top estate, where there was a fair amount of zig zagging along and around St Francis and Assisi Rds. Wide Load complained about being cold and the only advice she received was to get her butt moving a bit faster!!!! However, what goes down must go up and this was achieved by a very steep set of steps leading up to the ridge overlooking the Avon valley. At this stage 5 Minz turned up all eager and keen clutching his bugle. The run headed by Hi Gang, Ember and All’s Well then headed along the ridge in the general direction of the pub. A number of checks, down some more steps this time and it was soon On Inn to the pub. The JM gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken about an hour in pretty awful conditions.

RUN1467

RV: The Black Horse - Hurdcott. HARE: On 3 & Ember HOUNDS: Wide Load, Great Expectations, Dancing Brave, 5 Minz, Slow Coach, Mad Hatter & All's Well. A good turn out, nearly reaching double figures!!!. The trail was quickly picked up heading back from the pub towards the main road in Hurdcott. A number of checks and it was then across the fields on a narrow track, flanked in places by barbed wire, a problem for Dancing Brave on his bike. The A338 was quickly reached and it was then On On along the main road past the Village Hall and the Church. The bright lights did not last too long and the trail headed down a narrow track towards the R Bourne. The cross country phase then begun in the pitch black along assorted farm tracks heading SW. WH3 then came upon a huge check, so much so that the entire pack was able to stand inside the circle. The senior Hare then appeared and ere long it was On Inn back to the pub. The JM have the crit and thanked the Hares for their efforts in laying an excellent trail that had taken fifty minutes, including the viewing of satellites by Great Expectations and Slow Coach earlier in the run. Wide Load produced very nice cakes to celebrate her birthday on 31 Oct very much appreciated by the Hares and all the Hounds.

RUN1466

RV: Central Car Park, The Greyhound - Amesbury. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Wide Load, Great Expectations & Dancing Brave. A miserly(so said Great Expectations) pack of three gathered at the main car park in Amesbury. Unlike the week before it was a clear, but a cold evening, with a full moon. The trail was quickly picked up by Great Expectations heading towards the Countess roundabout. A check and the trail headed into the woods on a track by the R Avon. This went on for a bit, eventually heading for the high ground near the London Rd, where Wide Load nearly came adrift the week before. Having reached the London Rd, Great Expectations spotted the Hare down near the old NAAFI complex. Great Expectations and Wide Load gave chase at speed, followed by a bemused Dancing Brave, who just managed to keep up, albeit on a bike!!!. After much crowing the Hare was finally cornered at Folly roundabout, by Solstice Park and given five minutes to get on with his trail laying. This he did and for the next twenty minutes or so WH3 zig zagged around the Butterfield Down estate, with numerous checks on offer. As it was getting dark and colder; all good things must come to an end and it was soon “On In? to the pub. Great Expectations gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken around fifty five minutes to complete. Bribe – next week Wide Load is bringing along cake.

RUN1463

RV: Hare Warren Wood. Apres The Victoria and Albert, Netherhampton. HARE: Slow Coach. HOUNDS: Wide Load, Alls Well, 5 Minz, On 3 & Dancing Brave. The pack met up at the RV, albeit Wide Load had to visit the pub to find out where it was. The start was a little late and the trail was quickly picked up heading along the track heading towards the West. WH3 then circumnavigated the woods in the gathering gloom and fairly dismal conditions. One of the highlights from the previous run in the woods was large scale tree felling over in the direction of the Shaftesbury Rd. This somewhat knocked the Hare off course, or so he admitted after the run. The run continued with Alls Well, 5 Minz & On 3 taking it in turn to be FRBs. Finally, the Shaftesbury Rd was reached, a check, a left turn on it was On On to the South along the road. A check, a left turn onto the track we had started on and WH3 headed East towards the RV. Not to be outdone the Hare had organised a loop and it was quickly back into the woods. Dancing Brave had no lights, so he cut his losses and headed for home. The remainder followed the trail and were quickly back at the RV, with Wide Load putting on a burst of speed to come in first. Back at the pub On 3 gave the crit. He thanked the Hare for his efforts and an excellent run that had taken just fifty five minutes. ON ON.

RUN1461

RV: Dancing Brave, Wide Load & Mad Hatter. Dancing Brave bumped into the Hare on the junction of the man road and the minor road leading to the RV. The Hare had just discovered that you cannot stick drawing pins to a metal post and as a result had to tie on his WH3 direction sign with string no mean feat. However, having arrived at the RV up on the plain, a cloud of dust was seen approaching from the West, which turned out to be Wide Load arriving at speed in her motor. The Hare then departed to the East and another cloud of dust brought in Mad Hatter. Naturally enough the trail was picked up heading to the East. A check at a track/road junction and it was 'On On' down into the valley and after a fairly long run into the woods. Lots of checks and the options were numerous with only three Hounds to cover them. The trail was picked up by Mad Hatter heading into the woods and was lost for a time as the Hounds tried to suss it out. Wide Load was successful and picked it up and discovered that three blobs close together indicate a change of direction. She was to learn more later!!!. The trail then headed into a newly laid clearing and followed well defined tank tracks marks, eventually ending up on one of the main training area tracks. Time was getting on and it was getting much colder and the trail was picked up again by Wide Load heading back up hill towards the RV. Here she learned of the double circle checks and twin blobs much loved by the Hare!!!!. It was soon On Inn and back to the pub. Dancing Brave gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken just under the hour.

RUN1459

RV: The Bridge - Upper Woodford. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: All’s Well, Slow Coach, Hi Gang & Summer Lighting. On a very nice evening WH3 gathered at the pub and quickly set off across the bridge on the back road leading to Great Durnford/Netton. A loop through a field, a check at the crossroads and it was 'On On' up to and along the ridge to the West of Great Durnford. The going at the beginning was good, but further along the track was very overgrown, but Hi Gang managed to stay on his bike. Eventually the main road was reached, however Summer Lighting did not persist with the correct trail along a track beside the road, were new trees had recently been planted. However, All’s Well and the JM, not wishing to hang about, headed downhill into Great Durnford. A check, a sharp left turn and soon the trail was picked up heading over the Avon. Having crossed the river there were a number of options and Hi Gang rightly assessed the correct one; a fairly long run up towards Stings home at Lake House. A check and the top and the trail then headed South along the main road, with a number of checks, towards Upper Woodford. It was soon 'On Inn' to the Pub. The JM gave the crit and thanked the Hare for his efforts on a lovely evening. On such an evening and as there was no wind the Hare was able to report that he was able to hear the pack 'barking' across the valley on the Durnford ridge as he finished laying the trail over to the West. 'On On'

RUN1456

RV: The Rockingham Arms - Canada Common. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: Slow Coach, Dancing Brave, Fakir & 5 Minz. The pack mustered in drabs in the pub car park. At three minutes to six there were two, but when the pack set off at five past six, we were up to our full number of five, including the hare. It was soon out onto Canada Common with a right turn onto the minor road. After that it became something of a co-op run, as the Hare had difficulty finding the trail and he became a sort of honorary hound as the run progressed. The whole business was not helped by high winds and driving rain, which made the going tough for Dancing Brave. Slow Coach, Fakir and 5 Minz, displayed considerable jumping skills in clearing the numerous mini rivers along the route, in an attempt to keep their feet dry. Anyway to cut a long story short, WH3 had run in a large wet circle around the common and not before time it was back on the minor road. Ere long it was soon 'On Inn' to the pub after a forty five minute run. The JM have the crit and thanked the Hare for his excellent efforts on a really foul evening.

RUN1453

RV: Hare Warren Woods. Apres: The V & A - Netherhampton. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Slow Coach, 5 Minz & Hi Gang. A Hare change at short notice and Dancing Brave took over the lead from Beagle. The RV was changed to Hare Warren Woods located up near the Race Course and WH3 set off on a reasonably nice evening, at least it was not raining!!!! Initially the trail headed North along well defined tracks into the woods, where Hi Gang reported the going excellent for a biker. The trail then followed a loop around the edge of the woods, eventually arriving on the Bulbridge Rd after lots of checks.. A short run along that road that and it was back homewards along a track heading East towards the RV. A final loop back into the woods was picked up by the pack. At this stage the Hare who was at the RV heard 5 Minz and his horn and in another five minutes or so the pack appeared at the RV. Back at the pub the JM gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken a touch over fifty minutes.

RUN1452

RV: The Wheatsheaf - Lower Woodford. HARE: Slow Coach. HOUNDS: Great Expectations, 5 Minz, Hi Gang, On 3, All's Well, Summer Lightning, Dancing Brave and Colin (Friar Tuck?), a first timer for this run. Despite rain and high winds during the day and fact that the Hare rightly felt it prudent to lay a hot trail and quite rightly so. By the time WH3 assembled at the pub the weather had changed for the better and so WH 3 set off across the R. Avon up the ridge to the East. At this stage Friar Tuck disappeared up a farm track and did not re-appear on the ridge for another ten minutes or so, by which time the pack was on its way down from the ridge. Summer Lightning did not seem all that concerned about his whereabouts!!! - good Hash logic!!! Ground level was quickly reached by the game keepers house and WH3 headed West along a minor road until the main road was reached. Along the way Dancing Brave fell off his bike, but luckily was not damaged, nor was the bike!!! In addition, Great Expectations damaged ankle held out and she managed to keep up with the pace. A quick trip through Lord Chichesters estate and it was soon 'On Inn' to the pub. Hi Gang gave the crit and thanked the JM for an excellent run in fairly nice weather that was bang on the hour. ON ON!

RUN1449

RV: The Hook & Glove - Farley. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: 5 Minz & Mad Hatter. The Hare when he set off had no idea who might follow him, with such poor attendance figures from the previous two runs. However, it transpired afterward that there were no less than two Hounds, 5 Minz and Mad Hatter. They picked up the trail heading towards the South along a track with a lot of new shiggy. Eventually the main road by East Grinstead was reached, a check, a sharp left turn and the trail headed NE towards Blackmoor Copse. Afterwards 5 Minz said that he took the straight ahead option at most checks, but Mad Hatter had a tendency to veer to the left. With only two runners this slowed down the pace somewhat!!!!. Having navigated Blackmoor Copse the trail ended up on the main road by The Livery. A check and the trail was picked up heading West along a little used track well stocked with nettles. Eventually civilisation was reached and the trail then followed the tree line to the NE of Farley. A further check and it was then 'On Inn' to the South towards the pub. 5 Minz gave a sort of crit, but is was more a discussion between the three that had completed the run. The Hare was thanked for his efforts for a run that had taken one hour and thirty seven minutes to complete, due to an acute shortage of Hounds to check out the checks along the way and the fact that Madder Hatter had a habit of veering to the left!!!! going anti-clockwise!!! 'ON ON'.

RUN1448

RV: The Pembroke Arms, Fovant. HARE: Alls Well (virgin lay). HOUNDS: On3, 5 Minz. One might have said, 'Well, well, well'. However, to the contrary, one could also have said that all was not quite as well as all that. What one is intending to convey is that one could have rightly said that, in hindsight, Alls Well was all well but until Alls Well arrived to attest that he was, well, all well, all that one was able to say was that not all was quite as well as simply all, in simply alls well, would simply imply. (What a load of alls!) For chronological clarification, first, it was as well one had noticed that the pre-laid trail had been, well, pre-laid. Second, it was as well that Alls Wells eventual but timely appearance was, well, an eventual and timely appearance. And that, by then, was well all there was. In other words one and all were one and one. That was considered to be not alls well. Never mind. Third, soon after the 'on, on, on' Alls Well and one were augmented by, well, well, well, ON, ON, ON. And it was he who acknowledged in his critique Alls Wells diligent application of flour delineating a 4 mile circumambulation of the village. Also appreciated was the grand setting for refreshment. That was considered to be, well, alls well.

RUN1447

RV: Grid 172463 - The Rose and Crown, Bulford. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Mad Hatter, Baggy Trousers, Slow Coach and walking wounded Great Expectations missed the apres. No notes.

RUN1446

RV: Martin Drove Nature Reserve Car Park. Apres: The Fox & Goose - Coombe Bisset. HARES: Slow Coach & Baggy Trousers. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Dancing Brave, All's Well, Mad Hatter, 5Minz & On 3. Initially, Dancing Brave and 5 Minz turned up at the RV on a lovely evening. As the clock was fast approaching 6.00 pm they both wondered if they were to begin the run as a pair, rather than as a pack. However, salvation was at hand and the remaining hounds and the hares arrived in a cloud of dust. The trail was quickly picked up heading across the A354 towards the woods to the NW. This was the opposite way round to previous runs. What followed then was a very pleasant run through the trees and fields, hampered in may cases along the way by blobs that had disappeared. So the pace was very gentle. Eventually, WH3 arrived back on the A354 and led by Hi Gang and 5 Minz headed SE back on to the nature reserve. Eventually, the old rifle range butts were reached, where an observation was made, that All's Well was about to melt, with the amount of perspiration that was pouring off him. Dancing Brave suggested that he should offer his services to the NASA. The trail was then picked up by On 3 and Mad Hatter heading back towards the RV and soon it was 'On In'. Back at the pub On 3 gave the crit and thanked the JM and Baggy Trousers for an excellent run that had lasted around fifty minutes. 'ON ON'

RUN1444

RV: The Prince Leopold - Upton Lovell. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Slow Coach, Baggy Trousers & 5 Minz. Another very small turnout, however the weather was wonderful. The pack set off from the Prince Leopold at around ten past six, because 5 Minz was late. The trail was quickly picked up heading SE and then West along the fields in the direction of Corton. At this stage a large your bull around eighteen months old was observed in a field and was introduced to 5 Minz as 'Sterling Montrose' by a lady walker who was in the vicinity. It was then 'On On' over the railway line and soon the outskirts of Corton were reached. Having reached the main road a check and then a serious uphill flog to the ridge to the South of Corton. Afterwards the JM said the older you get the longer these climbs appear to be, which was agreed by Baggy Trousers and 5 Minz (and the Hare). The trail then headed downhill NW to the main road. A fairly long run back towards Corton, a check and the trail then headed North across the fields, under the railway this time, towards Upton Lovell. At this stage the pack bumped into some cows, one of which, did not seem to like Hashers. However, it was 'On On' towards Knook, a number of checks, a sharp right turn and it was soon 'On Inn' to the pub. The JM gave the crit and thanked the Hare for his efforts in laying an excellent trail that had taken an hour and ten minutes to complete. 'ON ON'

RUN1443

RV: The New Inn - Amesbury. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Slow Coach, Baggy Trousers & Dancing Brave. The pack followed the Hare out of the Antrobus Arms Car Park at about five past six. The weather was good and there was no hint of rain. The trail was quickly picked up by the JM heading towards the Amesbury recreation ground. Some time was lost here as one or two blobs seem to have been rubbed out on the track heading SW past the recreation ground. However, the Avon was reached and the trail was picked up by Dancing Brave heading steeply uphill towards Amesbury Down. Having reached the top Baggy Trousers took over traffic control as the JM and the single hare checked out the trail. The JM found it heading SW and downwards into the Avon valley in the general direction of Durnford. Having crossed a field ending up near an old chalk quarry, WH3 crossed the Avon for a second time, ending up on the back road heading towards West Amesbury. This became a long 'Run In' and the pack was joined by the Hare in his car, obviously worried about the whereabouts of WH3. The JM & Baggy Trousers declined a lift back to the pub, but were soon back in the New Inn. The JM gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken about eighty minutes. On On.

RUN1442

RV: The Boot - Shipton Bellinger. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: Mad Hatter, Slow Coach, Baggy Trousers, 5 Minz & Dancing Brave. Great Expectations turned up at the beginning to report sick, sporting a bad ankle and then departed. The rest of the pack set off a little after six and led by Baggy Trousers headed across the church yard and into the fields beyond via a further two checks located by the same runner. The struggle than began and it was 'On On' uphill to a wooded plateau East of Shipton Bellinger. A left turn along some very rutted tracks and WH3 headed North, including a loop through the woods where Mad Hatter found the trail and then a check on the top of the plateau. It was then a steep downhill run through the woods in the direction of the A338. Near the bottom Slow Coach and Dancing Brave ended up at one check, whilst 5 Minz and the remainder had gone in a different direction along the side of a field, with lots of cows, using a different check. The first check was the problem, as the Hare had failed to insert a bar. A 'Down Down' one hears!!!! Having reached the main road the pack headed for the pub via a dry river bed. Slow Coach gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken an hour and ten minutes.

RUN1438

RV: The Fox & Goose, Coombe Bissett. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: Great Expectations, 5 Minz, Slow Coach, Baggy Trousers, All's Well and Dancing Brave. All very exciting as WH3 turned up at the Fox & Goose. We were told by the management to move our cars to the east end of the car park, as some very important people were going to turn up later with antique and high priced cars. Strangely enough we have encountered this before The pack, led by Great Expectations, eventually picked up the trail and headed off towards Homington. The odd zig zag, a check about half way there, a left turn into the fields and it was 'On On' past the sheep to a large house at the end of the track. A Green Spotted Woodpecker was also spotted along the way. At the large house an unusual check was encountered, one indicating a back check and the other elsewhere. Slow Coach and Baggy trousers elected to go back, whilst the remainder discovered that 'elsewhere' was up a very steep hill to the North. This hill having been climbed, a check, a left turn and WH3 headed back down towards the SW into the valley and back towards Coombe Bissett. In was soon 'On Inn' to the pub, having been re-joined by Slow Coach and Baggy Trousers near the old watercress beds. The JM gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken just over the hour.

RUN1437

RV: The Lamb, Nomansland. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Great Expectations and her young friend Olivia, Slow Coach, Baggy Trousers and Dancing Brave. WH3 met up at the car park opposite the pub. There was a fair amount of hand warming as it was very cold with a nasty wind blowing. The trail was picked up heading NE towards the Bramshaw Rd. Unusually, the Hare stuck to the roads, rather than the woods. When the main road was reached, the trail was lost, with the five hounds checking out in all directions, Baggy Trousers thought she was On but to no avail. However, the Hare, surprise, suprise, popped out of the bushes and WH3 was sent on its way along the road towards Barford Farm, this time heading East. The next phase was a fairly long cross country hike, back towards the pub, with no less than seven stiles along the way. Slow Coach took pity on Dancing Brave and helped him get his bike over the first batch. Eventually, the church on the Bramshaw Rd was reached and the trail here was picked up by Great Expectations and Olivia going around the back or to the East of it. Eventually, it was back on the main road and an 'On Inn' run uphill through the woods back to the pub. The pub was packed and the JM gave the crit propping up the bar. He thanked the Hare for his excellent, but unusual on roads through the woods run, that had taken about sixty five minutes. Happy Easter to all.

RUN1434

RV: Brown St Car Park. Apres: Roi d'Or. HARE: Hi Gang. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, Baggy Trousers, 5 Minz, Slow Coach, Great Expectations & On 3 - a bit late!!!! The Hounds that turned up early at Brown St Car Park were treated to a star performance by five drunks, including one lady who stripped to the waist. Luckily, their performance was somewhat marred by dropping their bottle of booze on the ground as it was being passed from one to the other. WH3 set off a little after six heading via the Cloisters and the Friary through a narrow alleyway to Exeter St. It was then 'On On' past the Rose and Crown up on to the Harnham Rd. Then came the 50/50 decision, was it West down the Harnham Rd or up on to the hill. 5 Minz discovered the answer, it was up the hill. Up the hill it was then, on the steepest tracks that the Hare could find. Dancing Brave discovered that it was not much fun, humping a bike as deadweight. The pack than began a tour of Bouverie Ave, etc, etc, to be joined by On 3 who had come from the direction that WH3 was heading for. Eventually, after further serious climbs, which Baggy Trousers found to be an energy killer, it was down onto the MOD MQ estate and then on to the Harnham Rd. As it was getting late WH3, led by Great Expectations, headed for home down to the Harnham traffic lights, then along Exeter St and 'On Inn' to the pub. Slow Coach gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken one hour and twenty five minutes.

RUN1432

RV: The Old Mill, Harnham. HARE: Fakir. HOUNDS: Great Expectations, Dancing Brave, Beagle, 5 Minz and On 3. The pack RVd at the Old Mill and remarked that evenings were beginning to lengthen - good news, as the weather was also good. In the first three hundred yards heading towards the Harnham Rd, On 3 broke all the WH3 rules, namely climbing into a Wilts and Dorset bus. More about this later. Anyway after all this excitement the pack headed for the top of Harnham Hill (via 117 steps) and having got there legged it down to the Old Blandford Rd on the other side. Having come down the numerous steps clutching his bike onto the main road, Dancing Brave had to climb up another set heading towards the fields near the former Cold Research Hospital. The field was quickly crossed, with a number white ponies looming out of the dark as they grazed on top of the hill. That phase of the run quickly ended at a check on the Odstock Rd. It was then “On On? downhill and after a loop around the new estates on the Downton Rd, the pack headed via Burford Rd and Lane to the Harnham traffic lights. A short loop in the area of the Grey Fisher and it was soon 'On Inn' to the Old Mill. Great Expectations gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken just over an hour. She then turned her attention to On 3 and awarded him a 'Down Down' for his misdemeanour on the bus earlier in the run - naughty hound!! - a bit of variety is the spice of hashing!!!!!

RUN1431

RV: The Chough - RV Salt Lane. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Great Expectations, Baggy Trousers, Slow Coach, Dancing Brave, 5 Minz, Fakir and On 3. The pack RVd at Salt Lane and set off at about eight minutes past six having found the first check under the parking meter. The trail headed towards St Edmunds Church and passing the old swimming pool did a zig zag around the Wyndham Rd area. The run progressed around St Pauls roundabout, down Fisherton St, along Water Lane and ending up in Crane St. A trip through Cathedral Close, where the trail was lost and WH3 ended up in Exeter St. A few more streets came and went and the pack ended up in Salt Lane. WH3 then headed towards The Clough having worked up a good apatite along the trail. Most hounds arrived at around seven fifteen, preceded by Sandy Moore, Noesse, both very welcome indeed and the Hare. Orders were taken at around seven thirty, however, first courses did not hit the table until eight fifteen, a long Wait and hungry hashers. Main courses arrived about half an hour later and by the time they were finished it was around nine fifteen in Hash terms a mega long Wait !!!. Prior to the meals arriving and to kill time!!! the JM, Slow Coach, gave the crit. He thanked the Hare for his efforts and a well timed run around fifty minutes. Had the Hare been aware of the potential catering logjam in the pub, he could have stretched the run, but not easy to achieve in retrospect!!!

RUN1430

RV: The Black Horse – Great Durnford. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Great Expectations, Baggy Trousers, Slow Coach & Dancing Brave. WH3, that is to say, the Hare, Great Expectations and Dancing Brave gathered in the driving rain at the back of the pub well before the appointed hour. Before setting off a plan was hatched and it was decided that the run would be restricted to the roads around Great Durnford to avoid risk to life and limb. The trail was picked up heading SW from Great Durnford towards Upper Woodford in the pitch black. It was not to be Great Expectations lucky run, because, other than admiring the Snow Drops and being drenched by a bus later in the Hash, she went off in the wrong direction at every check, other than the last. As a result Dancing Brave had a lot of waiting and shouting to do, but as he had a bike, this was not a problem. Eventually, after navigating around the back roads, Great Expectations and Dancing Brave made it back to the pub. Great Expectations gave a short crit and thanked the Hare for his efforts and his 60th lay to boot on an awful evening. No sooner had this finished than Baggy Trousers burst through the door of the The Black Horse closely followed by Slow Coach. They had arrived late, but managed to complete the run, albeit not in the manner that the Hare had worked out!!!. Reminder - Hash Nosh in Salisbury 20 Feb – The Chough, Blue Boar Row – around 7.15ish p.m.

RUN1427

RV: The Swan Enford. HARE: Great Expectations. HOUND: On his own - 5 Minz ! It was evident that wintry climes deter many Hashers from pursuing their favourite pastime, most, perhaps, with perfectly genuine and irrefutable reasons, as on this occasion. Notwithstanding, the singularly meritorious Hare and ditto Hound fulfilled the functions of traditional hashing, i.e., by getting on with it, regardless. Practical methodologies were what were needed and, with the Hounds knowledge of the area, the following was spontaneously adopted. From a given check, the idea was to search for the next check at potentially the shortest distance from the given check. If that were to prove false, opt for the next nearest; and so on. Furthermore, a close eye was to be kept on the Hare. The Hare following shortly behind the Hound would almost certainly manifest in on-on, whereas the Hare remaining at a check would mean on-on was improbable; and the Hare complaining of the cold would mean guidance was about to be freely issued. Such guidance, though, had to be considered carefully by the Hound there were back-checks. As regards the trail, a short section had not been pre-laid; its completion had been intended by the Hare, after the first traverse by hounds, in the form of double checks and blobs. In order to accompany the Hound, however, it was decided that improvisation by the Hare, with descriptions of imaginary symbols, would overcome this problem. Further deviation followed; towards the end the Hare offered a choice of on-inns. Nevertheless, arrival at the pub was timely, just as its door was unlocked. Replete with revivifying beers and on settling before a stoked, and poked, log fire it fell to the Hound to deliver the Hash Crit. It was recommended that this memorable trail be used again, for those who missed out this time, but, it has to be said, the accident prone Hare should refrain from tripping, yelping and falling prostrate on such a future occasion. HASH WORDS NOT BY THE HARE.

NYD RUN1424

RV: The Swan Stoford. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Fakir, 5 Minz, Mad Hatter, Alls Well, Slow Coach, Baggy Trousers & Mrs Fakir on her bike. The RV was at the Royal Oak at Great Wishford, albeit WH3 had to retire to the Swan Inn across the A36 at Stoford as the former was not open on 1 Jan 07!!!. The pack assembled and was a reasonable turn out on a very dry and bright day. Some ten minutes after eleven the trail was picked up heading to Stoford. A number of checks and the trail headed North up Chain Hill, a fairly steep climb. Half way up the hill there was a bit of a muddle, because the Hare's Wait was taken to be a Check Back. The former was correct and some time (20 mins!) was wasted before the penny dropped and WH3 got back on course. In the meantime Hi Gang suffered yet another puncture and had to depart the scene to sort out repairs. However, it was soon On On up to the barn and a rest after the double climb, engineered by 5 Minz, the leading FRB. A check, a left turn and the pack headed down a muddy track to Stapleford. A number of checks and the trail headed into the rather wet Wylye Valley heading East. A very nice run along the river line, where the one and only bridge on that section was reached and it was then 'On Inn' along the back road to the Royal Oak at Great Wishford. Having assembled at the Swan, Slow Coach gave the crit and thanked the Hare for his efforts.

XMAS RUN1423

RV: The Harvesters, Old Sarum. HARE: Slow Coach. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, Great Expectations, Disreputable, On 3, Ember, 5 Minz, Hoi Sin, Mad Hatter, All's Well, Baggy Trousers, News Hound, Noodle and Yorkie. A big turn out on a reasonable day, albeit two days after the Christmas festivities. It was nice to see News Hound and Disreputable again after an absence of some years in both cases. The trail was quickly picked up heading for the Old Sarum ramparts. With such a large number of runners (relative to WH3!!!) the pace was quite slow and all checks were investigated to the full. It was not long before the trail headed down the narrow track towards Stratford Castle. A check and the trail veered across Hudsons Field ending up on Stratford Rd. Most hounds, at this stage, thought it was going to be NE up Park Lane and then home, but that was not to be as the Hare had thought otherwise. WH3 hit the shires? and after navigating uphill along Cornwall Rd and Cambridge Rd eventually hit Bishopsdown Walk, a series of checks, a turn to the NW and it was, after a fairly long run On Inn to the pub, with Dancing Brave pushing his bike after a puncture along the way. On 3 have the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run enjoyed by all. To end proceedings Ember was presented with her 100 Run Certificate and a tankard to go with it - well done!

RUN1421

RV: The New Inn- Amesbury. HARE: Tic Tac & Minger. HOUNDS: 5 Minz, Slow Coach, Dancing Brave, Mad Hatter & Great Expectations. Another foul evening with worse to come. Where was the start point, The New Inn or the Antrobus Arms Car Park? The car park won, given away by a check at the entrance, albeit Great Expectations maintained a watch on the pub. The trail was picked up heading along Salisbury St, past the old Co-op and a rather dangerous cherry picker. There was then a certain amount of zig zagging, eventually heading North up the London Rd past Focus. A check at the junction of Holders Rd and the trail then went around and about in the numerous housing estates in that area. At this stage the rain started to really come down, albeit the pack had made good time along the way. Eventually, WH3 made it to Boscombe Down, where there were a number of checks. At this stage the rain had got steadily worse and after a number of discussions it was decided to head for home. Back at the pub Slow Coach gave the crit and thanked Tic Tac and Minger for a well laid run that had taken around fifty seven minutes - an excellent time on a very bad evening.

RUN1420

RV: The Old Mill - Harnham. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: 5 Minz, Slow Coach, Dancing Brave & Beagle. Although small in number WH3 met up on a dark and dank evening at The Old Mill. The trail was picked up heading towards Harnham Hill, eventually ending up on the Old Blandford Rd. Having done a short tour of the woods the pack ended up in the housing estate named after a number of counties, Essex, Sussex, Kent, etc. It then headed back to the Harnham Rd, a check near the former In Excess and it was 'On On' up Upper St and a very pleasant surprise at the junction with Richards Way. Beagle called a halt, a knock on his door, as he lives on that corner and his wife appeared with a tray of very welcome drinks. WH3 attempted a carol, but the result was fairly awful, albeit the drinks went down very well indeed. More serious training required for 19 Dec!!!!. The pack then headed home via the Old Meadows and 'On Inn' to the pub. The JM, Slowcoach, gave the crit and thanked On 3 for an excellent run that had taken just over the hour with 31 checks. He then presented Dancing Brave with his certificate and an appropriate bottle to commemorate his 700 Runs (beat Alimentarty after all!!!!) and 125 Lays over a period of 16 years.

RUN1418

RV: The Duck - Laverstock. HARE: Slow Coach. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, Dancing Brave, Noesse, On 3, Ember and 5 Minz. WH3 turned up at the pub well before the appointed hour, less Slow Coach. This was a bit of an oddball of a run and the weather was'nt much better either. The Hare appeared out of the gloom and was off at speed to the South. The pack followed along the muddy track heading in the same direction eventually ending up down near Queen Manor Rd. A chat by the bridge and the trail headed West up towards Fowlers Hill where WH3 was joined by On 3 and Ember, both carrying heavy packs. Before this we nearly lost Noesse, but 5 Minz back tracked , found her and guided her back to the check at the top hill. The trail then headed into Salisbury and after numerous adventures along the way ended up at St Marks roundabout having crossed the bridge over Churchill Way. At this stage it was five past seven, with more than a mile to go as the crow flies!!! Eventually, at around twenty five minutes past seven, WH3 arrived back at the pub, but no Hare was to be seen ( he had to go to a meeting and got fed up waiting for the pack to return he has apologised!!). Anyway, the JM, Alimentarty gave a sort of crit as it was more a discussion about the length of the run and suitable Down Downs, ete, etc. There was a happy ending, however, as Ember had just completed her 100th Run and was congratulated for her support and efforts over the years.

RUN1417

RV: The Royal Oak - Shrewton. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, Dancing Brave, Slow Coach, All's Well, Minger and Tic Tac. WH3 turned up at the pub well before the appointed hour, less Slow Coach. It was dark and damp, the traffic was horrific and parking outside the pub was even worse. The trail was quickly picked up heading North along a narrow track skirting the town. In continued in this way, eventually ending up back on the A360 having gone in a circle around the village. A check and WH3 headed into the fields leading up to a hill, where some seven or so years ago, Angel Cake had a close encounter with a sheep that wasnt looking where it was going either!!!!. The trail continued around the outskirts of the village, but the trade mark of the Hare, double and triple check circles did not materialise. After around fifty minutes the pack was on the home straight home, less Minger and Tic Tac, who went their own way on the On Inn phase. Back in the pub Slow Coach gave the crit, thanked 5 Minz and presented him with his 600 Run Certificate and a bottle to go with it. The new Sweaters, T Shirts, etc, are now available from the JM. Bring your cash next time.

More HARES urgently required.

RUN1416

RV: The Antrobus Arms Car Park. Apres: The New Inn - Amesbury. HARE: Alimentarty. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, Slow Coach 5 Minz, Noesse, Minger, Tic Tac and Skippy. First of all to set the records straight, last weeks Score Card was a week out of date and has now been corrected. 5 Minz did complete his 600 run on Tuesday last and is to be congratulated for his effort and support over the last 14 years. The trail initially headed for the R Avon and continued on that course for some time along the track. Eventually after a dogs leg upwards to the high ground WH3 headed back through the woods to Amesbury. Back in the outskirts of the town there were lots of twists and turns around the housing estates, streets and lanes, eventually ending up on the main road in from Old Sarum. A number of further checks and it was soon On In via a loop through a very dark lane and field back to the pub. The JM, Slow Coach, gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken just under the hour.

RUN1415

RV: The Amesbury Archer Solstice Park. HARE: Noesse. HOUNDS: Great Expectation, Dancing Brave, Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Alls Well, On 3, Ember (both a little late!!!), Slow Coach, Toothpaste, Minger & Tic Tac The pack RVd at the Amesbury Archer to discover that it was colder than previous weeks and also much darker, as a number of runners were sporting new head mounted torches. The Hare, Noesse, had set off previously on a bike to lay the trail and it was quickly picked up heading South towards Amesbury. However, road running quickly ceased and WH3 streamed East along the long track at the back of Boscombe Down. Boscombe Down was reached and a number of runners lost the plot and the trail, however, they were re-united once the old married quarters were reached. The problem then became WH3 v the trick or treaters. There were dozens of them roaming the estate, some under control and some not. However, the main gate of Boscombe Down was reached and Slow Coach, Great Expectations and Dancing Brave headed off towards Salisbury, but after consulting a map did an about turn and re-joined the pack heading back to Solstice Park and the pub. Slow Coach gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that took just about an hour. More HARES urgently required.

RUN1413

RV: SPTA Z Crossing. Apres: The Dog & Gun - Netheravon. HARE: 5 Minz HOUNDS: Great Expectation, Slow Coach, On 3, Ember, Noesse, Alimentarty, Baggy Trousers and See Squared. THE HARE WENT OFF AT TEN TO SIX FOR A LIVE LAY. THE PACK WENT OFF MINUS SLOWCOACH AND BAGGY TROUSERS WHO WERE TO ARRIVE LATE. LOTS OF ASSORTED ARROWS MADE WITH FLOUR, STONES, STICKS, FLOWERS, AND ALSO SOME DISCARDED USED FLARES, AT DIFFERENT CHECKS. WE HEADED SOUTH DOWN TOWARDS BOURNE BOTTOM A USUALLY MUDDY TRACK. AFTER ABOUT FIVE CHECKS THE LATE ARRIVALS MANAGED TO FIND US. WE THEN HEADED EAST TOWARDS SIDBURY HILL, BEFORE GOING BEHIND SOME WOODS. THE LIGHT WAS NOW FADING SO IT WAS TIME FOR THOSE WITH TORCHES TO USE THEM (A WARNING FOR FUTURE HASHES). WE THEN HEADED BACK TO WHERE THE CARS WERE. WE WENT BACK TO THE DOG AND GUN FOR THE DEBRIEF BY ON 3. IT WAS A WELL LAID TRAIL WHICH WAS BUZZED BY APACHE HELICOPTERS AND WITH LOADS OF TROOPS IN THE WOODS THE HARE HAD INTENDED TO USE.

RUN1411

RV: The Plough- Durrington. HARE: Alimentarty. HOUNDS: Minger, Great Expectations, Toothpaste, Mad Hatter, 5 Minz, Dancing Brave, Noesse and Tic Tac. The pack RV'd at The Plough, but did not set off until about five past six as Tic Tac was late. The trail was quickly picked up heading into a housing estate at the rear of the pub, a well route for most of the regulars. All running were very pleased to see 5 Minz back in action and none the worse for wear after his recent operation. It was then down into Old Durrington and across the R Avon into farmland where no less than three storks were sighted in a field. They were viewed with interest by the pack. It was then 'on on'? ending up using a disputed track, where a local property owner tried to divert WH3 onto MOD land. He did not succeed. The pack then headed back to Durrington via the outskirts of the local school. Great Expectations gave the crit and thanked the Hare, Alimentarty for an excellent run that had taken about an hour. She then sprung a surprise on Alimentary and awarded him a 'down down' as he had reached the magic age of sixty on the previous Sunday.

RUN1410

RV: The Rose & Crown - Bulford. HARES: Noesse & Tic Tac. HOUNDS: Minger, Great Expectations, Toothpaste, Alimentarty, Karen Cole and a runner named Beagle. The hounds headed off towards Durrington and ended up at the church. It then headed across the road into a field to the East of Bulford. In the field a large horse mushroom was found and it was subsequently carried around throughout the run. The trail then proceeded up the hill to Ratfyne Farm and then on to the Amesbury A303 flyover before going left to Solstice Park. The road was then crossed and WH3 followed the footpath back to Bulford Camp and through the woods to the old Railway Station. It was then down the steep bank and On Inn to the pub. It was an excellent trail for a fairly new hasher, Noesse and her assistant Tic Tac. The run lasted just over the hour, which was just right for this time of the year.

RUN1409

RV: The Swan - Enford. HARES: Alimentarty & Great Expectations HOUNDS: Noesse, Dancing Brave, Tic Tac, Minger, See Squared, Toothpaste, All's Well, Slow Coach & Baggy Trousers. The pack drifted in to The Swan on not a bad evening for this time of the year. The trail was picked up by Noeese heading South at speed. A check and the trail headed NE up onto the downs. Some way along the downs WH3 was joined by Slow Coach and Baggy Trousers guided by Alimentarty. At this stage, from an excellent point on the downs, C130 Hercules, were observed doing circuits and bumps around Upavon Some deer were also sighted!!!! At this stage Alls Well can only be described as a very lucky Hare. He had dropped his car keys on the trail and luckily they were picked up by Great Expectations who had been following. It was then down into the valley and up onto the other side where a pair of Chinooks flew over the pack about a 100 feet up. All very exciting!!! A number of checks and the pack headed West led by See Squared and Minger, along a grassy track back to the pub at Enford. Slow Coach gave the crit and thanked the Hares for their excellent efforts. A very good run that had taken around an hour and five minutes,

RUN1408

RV: Chez DAlts Hanging Langford. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: On 3, Ember, Great Expectations, Noesse, Alimentarty, Minger, See Squared, Toothpaste, Alls Well, Mick plus Alex and Karen, both first timers. The pack RVd at the Hanging Langford car park, where they were briefed by the Hare, Dancing Brave. The trail headed North towards Steeple Langford via the sports field and it was then on to the A36 by the Rainbow on the Lake. A check, a major road crossing and it was then On On up past East Cliffe Farm. This was a fairly long climb and eventually near the crest of the ridge a check was reached and it was On Down a narrow track to the A36. A further crossing of the A36, a loop around Steeple Langford, the R Wylye and soon Hanging Langford was reached. A number of runners thought this was the end of the road, so to speak, but this was not the case. A further hill climb up past the Hollows and it was soon On Inn to Chez DAlts for a pit stop plus. Alimentarty gave the crit, thanked the Hare for his efforts and also Angel Cake for her culinary delights. He welcomed also 5 Minz (recovering from his op), Liz and the two first timers. Finally, he presented Great Expectation with her Certificate and a bottle of the hard stuff as she had just completed her 300th run.

RUN1407

RV: Martin Down. Apres: The Queens Head, Broad Chalke. HARE: Hi Gang. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, Mad Hatter, Slow Coach, Great Expectations, Rooster Booster, Alimentarty, All’s Well, Baggy Trousers, Minger, See Squared & Toothpaste. WH3 RV’d at the car park to the Martin Down Nature Reserve, something of a daunting experience with speeding traffic heading South along the A354. However, the Hare turned up and the trail was quickly picked up heading along a track towards the East. A number of checks and the old rifle range butts were reached, where the pack was joined by Tooth Paste, Minger and See Squared. What followed was a loop by the side of the dyke and led by Alimentarty and Great Expectations WH3 reached the main road. The pack quickly crossed the road into the Nature Reserve with lots of twists and turns with blobs, checks, etc, laid in sawdust, rather than flour. As they were not easy to pick up, All’s Well, ended up going in the wrong direction more often than not. The weather was excellent and after a number of further excursions in and out of the woods it was “On Inn? along a track to the West of the RV. The JM, Slow Coach, gave the crit at the Queens Head at Broad Chalke. He described the run and thanked the Hare for an excellent trail that had taken just over the hour.

RUN1406

RV: The Bustard. HARES: Dancing Brave & Angel Cake. HOUNDS: Fakir, Mrs Fakir (mounted), Toothpaste, Mad Hatter, Slow Coach, Great Expectations, Rooster Booster, Slow Coach, Baggy Trousers, Alimentarty, Minger & See Squared. The Hares very nearly didn't make it to The Bustard, because of serious traffic jams on the A303. However, on reaching the high ground near Yarnbury Castle, they both noticed heavy black clouds to the North. These were to have implications later. The Hares duly laid the trail, got quite wet in the process and on arrival back at the pub found it was closed, much to the chagrin of Angel Cake. Anyway to cut a long story short the runners started to arrive back at the pub around ten to seven, all in a very wet state as the heavens had really opened in the final stages of the Hash. WH3 and guests, then settled down to refreshments followed by an indoor BBQ because of the weather. The Landlord produced an excellent meal which was much enjoyed by the eighteen or so that sat down to enjoy it in the dining room annex. There was no crit but Fakir thanked the Hares for their splendid efforts in difficult conditions, to the accompaniment of a generous round of applause. Eventually WH3 and guests departed home in good spirits, albeit into the rain and the descending Autumnal gloom. All our thanks to Great Expectations for organising it in The Bustard. Imagine what would have happened if we had run it ourselves, at one of the local BBQ sites!?

RUN1405

RV:The Stonehenge Inn, Durrington. HARES: Toothpaste & Minger HOUNDS: Dancing Brave,Mad Hatter, Slow Coach, Great Expectations, Rooster Booster, Alimentarty, See Squared, Noesse, Skippy & Mike. The pack met at the Stonehenge Inn and set off just after six with eleven on board. The first check was on the Stonehenge roundabout followed by an On On down the main road to Amesbury. A check and the trail was picked up by Mad Hatter. Noesse and Great Expectations heading past Woodhenge towards the West. Another Check and Alimentarty explained to Rooster Booster the topography and wonders of Durrington Walls. The trail then headed along the route of the old railway and around the back of the Married Quarters at Larkhill, a trail some of us had seen before!!!. After further history lessons, WH3 broke clean at Strangways, where the JM, Slow Coach, joined the pack. A left turn and it was down into the valley, eventually joining the main road at Larkhill. WH3 then headed East for the pub with a loop down to the Larkhill Driving Range and then On Inn on a track across the fields to the West of the pub. Slow Coach gave the crit and thanked the Hares for their excellent virgin lay, of good length and taking just around the hour. However, a coach load of grockles arrived before WH3 and getting hold of refreshments was not helped by series of on/off decisions to pay a Hash fee of 1 and buy ones own drinks!!!!

RUN1402

RV: The Hook & Glove, Farley. HARES: Slow Coach & Baggy Trousers. HOUNDS: Rooster Booster, Toothpaste, Mad Hatter, Noesse, Dancing Brave, Alimentarty, Minger, Hi Gang, Great Expectations, See Squared & Amy. The pack gathered at the Hook & Glove and set off at around five past six. The trail was picked up heading North to the rear of the pub across some fields, eventually ending up in a loop back to the main road that passes through the village. The pack then ploughed into the woods, where it was hot and sticky with lots of checks and chats. This phase of the run ended back on the main road, however, it was soon on on into Blackmoor Copse with lots of trails and even more options wonderful hashing country. All good things must come to an end and WH3 ended up on the main road again, where tics were discovered on assorted legs. An animated discussion followed and pronouncements made by Rooster Booster, the WH3 tic expert. It was soon On Inn to the pub. The JM, Alimentarty, gave the crit and thanked his fellow JM and Baggy Trousers for laying an excellent trail in ideal surroundings, less the tics!!!

RUN1400

RV: The Lamb Nomansland. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Toothpaste, Slow Coach, Noesse, 5 Minz (walking wounded), Alimentarty, Baggy Trousers, Minger, Hi Gang, Fakir, Great Expectations, Rooster Booster & See Squared. WH3 RVd at The Lamb, but set off ten minutes late because of a traffic accident on the A36. The trail was picked up heading across the cricket pitch and then on into the woods. The pace at this stage was judged to be slow, because the trail did not follow well defined tracks or paths. Furthermore it was very hot and sticky and frequent stops were required despite only progressing at a walking pace. To the surprise of WH3 some boggy ground was reached, feet got wet, but it was soon on into the woods and much cooler surroundings. The tempo picked up, Great Expectations kept finding the trail and Hi Gang managed to fall off his bike, or so this was reported. It was soon On Inn to the pub car park, and welcome refreshments. Fakir gave the crit and thanked the Hare for his efforts on a very hot evening.

RUN1399

RV: The Antrobus Arms Car Park The New Inn Amesbury. HARE: Alimentarty. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, On 3, Ember, Toothpaste, Slow Coach, Noesse, 5 Minz, Baggy Trousers, Minger & Alan, a first timer. WH3 RVd at the Antrobus Arms Car Park on a very hot evening, with a number of hounds clutching bottles of water, etc. With a warning from the Hare on nettles the trail was picked up heading West towards the Amesbury sports fields. There was then a loop around the football pitch and the pack headed for the R Avon and the nettles. In his enthusiasm to clear the nettles, 5 Minz ended up diving into the reeds and managed to damaged his ankle in the process. He duly limped back to the pub, while the remainder got to know the local housing estates better than they had in the past. WH3 ended up at the doctors car park in Amesbury and it was quickly On In to the RV. The JM, Slow Coach, gave the crit and welcomed Alan to the run. He congratulated the other JM, Alimentary, on his 50th lay and his excellent efforts on the run just completed, albeit on a very hot evening.

RUN1397

RV: The Cuckoo Inn, Hamptworth. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Great Expectations, Dancing Brave, Minger, Tooth Paste, Slow Coach, Baggy Trousers, Fakir, Alimentarty, See Squared & Rooster Booster. WH3 arrived in dribs and drabs at the The Cuckoo Inn on what was a very hot and humid evening. Last to arrive was Rooster Booster in his new sports car and after it was duly admired the pack set off in the direction of the golf course. The golf course was not to be and WH3 headed SW across some land belonging to Home Farm. All very nice, but the hot and sweaty bit was to follow. The trail headed back towards Hamptworth, a check and then a hell of a long straight run, over 2 kilometres, in the direction of Lyburn Farm. A drawn out check, traffic control orders issued by Great Expectations and WH3 plunged into Cloven Hill Plantations and the shade. It was then on and on and on never turning right for home. A huge colony of tiny toads was encountered, the long awaited right turn was reached shortly afterwards and it was On Inn to the pub. Slow Coach gave the crit and thanked the Hare for his efforts, albeit 1 hour 20 minutes on the roads/tracks!!!. WH3 B-B-Q, w/e 19/20th Aug...info to follow.

RUN1396

RV: The Fox & Goose, Coombe Bisset. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Great Expectations, 5 Minz, Hoi Sin, Minger, Slow Coach, Baggy Trousers, On 3, Alimentarty & See Squared. WH3 was suspicious when it turned up at the Fox & Goose as the Hares elderly Volvo was not around. However, a check was located and most of the pack, led by Great Expectations and Baggy Trousers, set off in the wrong direction. However, this was soon rectified and WH3 headed East out onto the downs. Eventually after a detour via a power line support and Slow Coach clambering over a dodgy stile the trail headed into Homington. There were a number of checks and eventually WH 3 ended up on the main road and after a quick recce of an electric sub-station it was On Inn to the pub. The JM, Slow Coach, gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken 55 minutes. He then thanked Hoi Sin for all her efforts over the past 2 years, particularly for her hard work as Hash Cash. He then presented her with her WH3 Certificate recording 41 runs and 5 lays over that period. On 3 was then handed the WH3 Account and books, as he has kindly taken over the duties of Hash Cash. ON ON

RUN1395

RV: The Wheatsheaf, Lower Woodford. HARE: Slow Coach. HOUNDS: Great Expectations, 5 Minz, Mad Hatter, Noesse, Dancing Brave, Hoi Sin, Baggy Trousers, Scott, On 3 & Alimentarty. WH3 met up at the pub at around 6.00 p.m. There was talk of rain coming up from the SW, but, luckily, none materialised, albeit the odd large dark cloud passed overhead. The trail was picked up heading North from the pub. This bit on the flat was not to last very long and as soon as the pack was across the R Avon it on up a very steep hill. A rest, a check at the top and the trail turned right along the ridge and headed down a farm track, until the woods were reached. It was then on on past the Game Keeper's cottage to a junction with three options. The correct option was found and the trail headed towards the main road and then via Lord Chichester's estate to the back road into Lower Woodford. A loop through the normally very wet valley and it was soon on inn to the pub. The crit was then given and the JM was thanked for an excellent run that had taken just under the hour to complete.

RUN1394

RV: The Rose & Crown, Bulford. HARE: Alimentarty. HOUNDS: Great Expectations, 5 Mins, Mad Hatter, Noesse, Slowcoach, Hoi Sin, Laura, Scott + new hound Craig. The pack gathered on a damp and cool evening to be briefed by the hare about the trail being laid in a deluge earlier in the day, so possible problems with damp flour! The trail was quickly picked up heading west along Watergate Lane. After the next check it turned north across the fields where the FRBs found themselves straying into a major nettle area; only to be brought back by the hare onto the correct trail - more damp flour! On reaching the main road the trail was picked up along Water Street where a number of the hounds went for a paddle! The trail then took us along to the local skate park, where much fun was had running up and down the slopes looking for blobs. After that it was in and around the housing estate and up into the woods, ending up near the old PSA office. At this point a triumphant Hoi Sin caught up having left work very late after a close encounter with a General! It was then On Inn back to the pub where Slowcoach gave the crit, having waited for Mad Hatter to re-join WH3 after a quick trip home for a shower and shave! The JM thanked Alimentarty for an excellent trail befitting a fellow JM that had taken around 50 mins.

RUN1393

RV: The George, Maddington. HARE: Tiny Tim. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, Dancing Brave, Great Expectations & Mad Hatter. There were arguments as to the location of the pub. Was it Maddington or Screwton ? The correct answer was the latter, confirmed by the Landlord. However, WH3 met up at the correct place and were not sure if the Hare was going to make it on time. As was the custom in runs of this nature the Hare had given Dancing Brave a map on the previous Sunday. The map did not have to be used. The pack then set off in the direction of Orcheston via the cricket pitch, the caravan park and the Rookery. The trail was then picked up by Alimentarty heading South towards the A360. A check, a gab and the trail headed East in the direction of Shrewton along a winding farm track. It was then On Inn to the RV at the sports field headed by Great Expectations at speed. Back in the pub Alimentarty gave the crit, albeit having had to wait for Mad Hatter to re-join WH3. He thanked Tiny Tim for an excellent run in lovely weather that had taken just under the hour. ON ON

RUN1392

RV: The Swan, Enford. HARES: Great Expectations & Noesse. HOUNDS: Scott & Dave, Alimentarty, Dancing Brave, Slow Coach, Mad Hatter and Rooster Booster. WH3 met up at the pub, and having waited for one of the JMs to do his quick change act the trail was quickly picked up heading North. After a check or two this turned out to be a loop around the village sort of warming up exercise where we were joined by Rooster Booster. We were nearly back where we started and having passed Littlecott House the trail did a dog log and it was up onto the plain. A check by a large TV antenna and the trail headed along a track to the East. Another dog leg back towards village through long grass, a check a quick, a trot across Palmerston meadow and a welcome pit stop chez Great Expectations. Duly refreshed WH 3 set off on its final loop, albeit Rooster Booster likened it to a ramble it must have been the French beer!!!!. Eventually after a steep climb up to the ridge it was "On Inn" downhill to the pub. Slow Coach thanked the Hares for their efforts, particularly Noesse for her virgin lay, and both for their excellent timings, one hour and ten minutes.

RUN1391

RV: The White Hart, Bishopstone. HARE: Rooster Booster. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Tiny Tim, Alimentarty, Dancing Brave, Noesse, Great Expectations, On 3, David and Scott. The former On Pres gave the crit, because from the location WH3 ran on this occasion, is one of his favourite Hashing grounds. The trail headed in the direction of the main road where On 3 waved at and was nearly knocked down by one of his mates, at speed: driving a Wilts & Dorset bus. However, after a check the trail turned South inland, slowly crossed a field full of cows and calves and then headed upwards to the hills. Great Expectations and Noesse were in the lead going uphill, unusual as chatting normally precludes this sort of front running. The summit was finally reached and WH3 stopped to admire the view of Salisbury Cathedral in the distance. It was then back downhill via an antique gate and the odd nettle. Great Expectations met a dog and the Hash met a couple who might be Hashers. The Hare guided the run through another field of bovines and eventually after passing some goats it was On Inn in a loop to the pub. Tiny Tim thanked the Hare for his efforts and an excellent run that had taken just over an hour. As a bonus the rain had held off and all departed homewards in excellent spirits.

RUN1390

RV: The Bridge Inn, Upper Woodford. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Tiny Tim, Slow Coach, Noesse, Hoi Sin, On 3 (late), Alimentarty, 5 Minz, David and Scot, a first timer. The Hounds turned up at the pub on time, the Hare having set off earlier to lay the trail. It was mild and damp, but not too bad overall. The trail was picked up heading North along the main road and after a number of interesting checks it ended up in the vicinity of Sting's home. Strangely enough WH3 had been in the same area on 23 Apr, where Hoi Sin had been Hare. The Woodford Valley has severe Hash limitations as we’ll all find out on 20 Jun!!!. The R Avon and lack of bridges is a major Hash blocker in the valley. None the less, the trail was picked up heading SE towards the Mill. A check at the main road at Great Durnford (GD) and was it to be left or right turn? Alimentarty opted for right, but was wrong. What followed was a loop around GD and a stiff climb up to the ridge to the East. WH3 then followed the track going downhill to the SW and before long it was “On Inn? to the pub via a narrow path with a bumper crop of nettles. Alimentarty gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run, that had taken fifty five minutes. In addition, he welcomed Scot to the run.

RUN1388

RV: The Black Horse, Great Durnford.HARE: Hoi Sin.HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Dancing Brave, 5 Minz, Tiny Tim, On 3, Mad Hatter, Alimentarty and Fakir. No less than the Hare and eight Hounds turned up at The Black Horse. A marked improvement on recent weeks!!! The trail meandered off to the West and completed a sort of figure of eight with the R Avon in the middle. The Hare kept a close eye on proceedings and some slick adjustments were achieved with an ample supply of flour she carried with her. However, it was soon back to the main road at Great Durnford and the trail was quickly picked up by Hi Gang. A check on the main road, a sharp left turn and the trail headed up a very steep incline moving towards the SE. Dancing Brave + bike had problems getting up the hill, but was assisted by Fakir, with the odd push and shove. The trail then headed North, with Tiny Tim, 5 Minx and Alimentarty leading, along an uneven track overlooking the delightful Avon Valley. Eventually, a minor road was reached and WH3 headed NW and down to an On Inn in the village. Fakir gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken just on the hour, with the odd adjustment!!!!

RUN1386

RV: The Boot - Berwick St James. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Hoi Sin, Great Expectations, 5 Minz, Rooster Booster, Slow Coach, Alimentarty & Claire. The pack met up at The Boot and set off a little after 6.00 p.m. The trail began on a loop around the back of the pub, where for some reason Rooster Booster decided to check on the contents of an old barn. What was in it ? Eventually, the pack led by 5 Minz ran across a fairly large field ending at the old Berwick St James school. After a long flog South along the B3083 a check was reached, a sharp left turn and WH3 headed up the steep hill to the high ground to the East. It started to rain but it did not last very long, luckily. Getting up the said hill took some time, observed with interest by the Hare from the other side of the valley, and eventually the pack having got to the top, headed downhill on a rutted track to Stapleford. A number of checks and the trail headed North along the track to the West of the R Till and then On Inn to the pub. The JM, Slow Coach gave the crit. He thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken just on the hour.

RUN1385

RV: The White Horse, Downton. HARE: Slow Coach. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, Hi Gang, 5 Minz & Alimentarty. The four Hounds, on a wet and miserable evening, met up at the White Horse at Downton, having got there in a number of ways including via Alderbury. The trail was quickly picked up heading North towards the new line of flood defences. A loop around this area and the trail headed back towards Downton. A check, a right turn and the trail was picked up heading towards A338 and the out of action and congested traffic lights at the junction. Hi Gang then found the trail going North, a check, a left turn and the trail headed into the countryside to the West. What followed, with 5 Minz and Alimentarty in the lead was a rural loop, where luckily the Hare was not overtaken and compromised. Eventually, WH3 ended up back on the A338, where just before it was reached Hi Gang decided to rescue what he thought was a trapped sheep. However, as he approached the animal, it got a whiff of him and legged it at speed, to the amusement of Dancing Brave. Not to break with tradition the trail then followed a course across the large field, South of the school and after a bit of a plod it was “On Inn? to the pub. Alimentary gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run, dead on the hour, albeit in foul weather.

RUN1384

RV: Gar Church, Larkhill. Apres: Stonehenge Inn. Hare: Alimentarty. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, Hi Gang, Great Expectations, 5 Minz & Claire, a first timer. There was a debate as to who should give the crit: the JM, Alimentarty, or Hi Gang. In the end Hi Gang won the day. He decided to forego the normal description of the run, in so far as to where the trail took us, as this particular part of the plain had been well trod by WH3 in previous years. However, he decided that it was a brilliant trail for runners and had serious historical connections, woods, paths, five deer, a bustard, numerous MQs, a WWI airfield and hangers, the old disused military railway line from Amesbury to Larhhill, which Dancing Brave remembered as far back as 1964!!!!. The Hare claimed that it was closed by Beeching in 1958, but nobody could confirm that. Stonehenge and the Curcus were viewed in the setting sun from a superb view point. The output in terms of volume from Great Expectations and Claire increased dramatically and even 5 Minz managed a few words unusual from him. Over to the East the airfields of Boscombe Down, Upavon and Netheravon stood out majestically in the setting sun, bringing tears to Hi Gangs eyes. However, all good things must come to an end and WH3 retired to the pub. Claire was welcomed and the Hare was congratulated on an excellent run that had taken 58 minutes.

RUN1383

RV: Rai d'Or, Brown St. Salibsury. HARE: Hi Gang. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, Alimentarty, Great Expectations, Slow Coach, Rooster Booster, 5 Minz & On 3. To start for once at the end where the JM, Slow Coach, gave the crit - After careful thought (if a Hasher can achieve this) he declared the run to have been sneaky, as befitting the Hare, Hi Gang. In addition, it was the first daylight run of the year and no sooner had WH3 got going, when Great Expectations came a cropper, hit the deck, damaged her knee and hand and we were all invited to review the damage back in the pub afterwards. However the sneaky run continued on its way around the multi story car park in Culver St ending up in Millford Mill Rd. The trail was picked up by Slow Coach and Rooster Booster heading along that extremely smelly lane heading SE towards the Southamton Rd. A quick tour of Churchill Gardens, lots more sneaky alleyways off Exeter St and ere long WH3 arrived back at the pub. The heavy rain predicted never materialised, much to the disappointment of the Hounds!!!!! so much for met men. The JM thanked the Hare for his sneaky efforts, but did the run take 51, 53 or 57 minutes. A Hash compromise was reached and 54 minutes was agreed !!!.

RUN1382

RV: Old Castle Inn, Castle Rd. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, Alimentarty, Great Expectations & Hoi Sin & 5 Minz. Five Hounds turned up at the Old Castle Inn at around 6.00 p.m., the Hare having set off earlier. Hoi Sin provided a resume of the events that followed. Initially the trail headed along the Old Sarum ramparts and after a number of checks the first gate was reached. Hi Gang, bike and all, went over the gate, but the trail was not going in that direction along the ramparts and he had to return back over the gate. The trail was eventually picked up heading steeply downhill to the road linking the Beehive to the Woodford Valley. The trail then headed SE towards the Portway. At this juncture Great Expectations and Hoi Sin received something of a shock, as did the Hare when he passed by earlier. The field has in very recent times been fenced in and a rather disgusting bedroomand assorted smelly rubbish had been set up by the small Pitt monument on the track. Glad to be clear of this, WH3 headed towards the open spaces of Hudsons field. Eventually led by Alimentarty and 5 Minz, WH3 head uphill along St Francis Rd, a left turn along St Marks Path and On Inn to the pub. A good run by all accounts.

RUN1381

A small but select bunch gathered at the NE end of the Boscombe Down runway on a bitterly cold evening with rain in the air. 5 Mins was hoping that it would not be necessary to lay a trail as there were so few runners but when Slowcoach turned up he was forced to do so; see below for the reason! The trail headed off east along a track towards Arundel farm and then along the lane leading to Newton Tony Xroads until a belt of trees was reached. What then followed was a typically clever 5 Mins run with the trail going backwards and forwards along a series of paths in the treeline, with an increasing number of circles denoting the same check being reached again and again. At one point Gt Expectations became disorientated and called the On along the trail that we had come down a few minutes earlier! Finally it was a long pull back west on a track at the edge of the wood until the farm and On Inn was reached. Apres was at the Crown at Cholderton where Slowcoach having done the crit was surprised by being awarded a certificate and a bottle of something alcoholic on reaching his 400th, hence the need for the run. Congratulations! On On.

RUN1379

RV: The Duck - Laverstock. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, 5 Minz, Great Expectations, Hoi Sin, Slow Coach, Rooster Booster, Fakir and Alimentarty. The Pack gathered outside the pub and set off at five past six. Most thought that the trail would head for the high ground to the East behind the pub, but this was not to be. The trail headed into Laverstock Village and after a series of zig zags around the Village Hall, the School and various estates, where few had been before and this routine went on for twenty minutes or so. Eventually the trail was picked up heading up a steep track towards the Downs. Naturally enough the light was very poor, the tracks were very narrow and whatever substance the Hare had laid the trail with was impervious to normal torch light. There was an heated debate on this issue between the Slow Coach, Fakir, most of the Hounds and the Hare just after the crest of the hill was reached. The mutterings continued and eventually WH3 headed downhill on a long run towards Petersfinger. A final check in Clarendon Way: the Hare legged one way, but the majority led by Slow Coach headed North along the badly rutted track towards the pub. Fakir gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run, less the invisible blobs, that had taken just on the hour.

RUN1378

RV: The Tollgate - Tollgate Rd, Salisbury: HARE: Hi Gang. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, 5 Minz, Great Expectations, Hoi Sin and Alimentarty. The Pack assembled from the four corners of Tollgate Rd as the pub car park was closed and wired off - good start! The trail was quickly picked up heading down Tollgate Rd in the direction of the Southampton Rd. A check, a tour around the car park at the back of the Technical College and WH3 broke clean into Churchill Gardens. What followed was a tour of the gardens with some subtle direction changes set up by the Hare. A a result Hoi Sin and Great Expectations didn't have time for a decent chat. A check opposite the Greyfisher and the trail did a loop around Britford Lane and Burford Rd ending up at the Harnham traffic lights, where WH3 had time to have a gossip and catch breath. The trail then headed up Harnham Hill and after a number of checks in the woods headed down to the Harnham Rd via a number of steep steps. At this stage time was running out and WH3 headed back towards the pub by way of a number of lanes and alleyways specially selected by the Hare. Great Expectations gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had lasted just over the hour.

RUN1376

RV: The White Horse - Quidhampton. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Fakir, Great Expectations, Slow Coach, Hoi Sin & Hi Gang. It is assumed that the Pack set off around 6.00p.m. as, at this stage, the Hare was well on his way, in mortal danger from the maniacal traffic on the Harnham Rd. This dangerous leg having been navigated WH3 ended up heading up towards the Race Course. A right turn along the long track to the South of the Pembroke Estate and the pack ended up at Bulbridge. A zig zag through the military patch and the trail was picked up heading North through the Bulbridge estate towards Wilton. Eventually Wilton was reached after forays in a number of directions, which were deemed by the whingers to be timewasters. At last the Wilton roundabout was reached and the survivors headed for home along the Wilton Rd and On Inn to the back of the pub after about an hour and ten minutes or so on the trail. The JM, Slow Coach, gave the crit and likened the run to one that had taken place from the Swan Inn at Stoford, some ten years ago and had taken two and a half hours to complete!!!. The Hare was awarded a obnoxious Down Down and duly admonished for his abominable Hash Hash. ON ON

More HARES & HOUNDS required.

RUN1375

RV: The Old Mill Harnham. HARE: Fakir. HOUNDS: On 3, Ember, Dancing Brave, Alimentarty, 5 Minz, Great Expectations, Slow Coach, Hoi Sin & Rooster Booster having passed his exams!! . WH3 met up at the Old Mill and the general consensus of opinion was that it was a lot warmer than the previous week. Moreover, the Hare/Hounds were in double figures and that had not been achieved since Run 1358 on the 18th of Oct. However, the trail was quickly picked heading NE toward Cranebridge Rd along the well known and trod Town Path and Queen Lizzie Gardens. A loop was then achieved via the Bird in Hand, North St, the Railway Station and WH3 ending up in Churchfields. A check near Cherry Orchard Rd and the trail was picked up heading South along the banks of the R Wylye/Nadder via Broken Bridges, in the dark until eventually Middle Street in Harnham was reached. What followed was a zig zag around various Harnham estates, with an eventual On Inn to the pub via the Hare's back gate. There was a dispute as to who should give the crit and eventually the JM, Alimentarty, prevailed over Great Expectations for reasons best left unsaid!!!. The Hare was congratulated for an excellent run that had lasted just under the hour. ON ON

RUN1373

RV: The Rose & Crown Bulford. HARE: Alimentarty. HOUNDS: Slow Coach, Dancing Brave, Mad Hatter, Tiny Tim, Hoi Sin & 5 Minz. A field of seven arrived in dribs and drabs. The pack eventually set off four to five minutes late having first watched Tiny Tim do the Glasgow Hash warm up, a variance of the River Dance routine!!!!. WH3 did not hit the fields close to the pub this time, but veered off across the working mans club car park heading towards the driver training circuit in the vicinity of the former Carter Bks, where 5 Minz managed to get lost. The trail then headed back towards Bulford Village and after a zig zag through the married quarters eventually arriving, via Sheepsbridge Rd, at the back of the old PSA building through the well known , but fairly dry, woods that surround it. A further bit of zig zaging around the housing estates and it was On Inn to the pub, albeit the On Inn sign had rubbed out by some oik, much to the annoyance of Alimentarty. Slow Coach gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that was bang on the hour. Curry next week in Amesbury. ON ON

RUN1372

RV: Hare Warren Wood. Apres: The Greyhound - Wilton: HARE: 5 Minz HOUNDS: Alimentarty, On 3, Dancing Brave, Mad Hatter, Tiny Tim, Hoi Sin & Great Expectations. It was a dark, damp, windy and horrible night when WH3 gathered in a clearing at the edge of Hare Warren Wood to the South of Wilton. After a certain amount of stumbling around in the dark and getting wet the trail was picked up heading into the woods where visibility was zero. This continued for the next fifty or so minutes along wet and very shiggy tracks. True to form the Hare laid a number of double and triple circled checks, which meant that, the Hounds covered the same piece of shig and a number of large pools more than once. On 3 took a tumble, but didn't get too wet and Great Expectations had problems working out where she was, as did, if the truth be known, the rest of the pack. Eventually WH3 got back to the RV, very wet and muddy and quickly headed down to the Greyhound at Wilton. On 3 gave the crit as the JM had problems speaking. He mentioned wind, rain and shig, lots of it and thanked the Hare for his efforts ON ON

RUN1370

RV: The Bustard Inn - Salisbury Plain. Hares: Great Expectations and Slowcoach. Hounds: Fakir, Tiny Tim, 5minz, Alimentarty, Trachoni. A bit of a cold wind greeted the hashers as they stood shivering in the car park by the Bustard Inn whilst a helpful off-road enthusiast obliged with the annual hash photo courtesy of Fakirs digital camera, before leaping into his Range Rover and driving into a large puddle. The pack headed off in the direction of Larkhill before turning towards the race course, then north in a loop through various woods in a long arc. Although the trail was laid the previous afternoon, most of the blobs and checks were still visible (just). There were some shiggy bits but on the whole the paths were pleasantly sunlit and offered some nice runs through the wooded areas including one particularly fine section via a natural tunnel through a fir plantation. The pack then crossed the grassland between tracks, past an Owl box, where Fakir collected a fresh pellet for future examination, and headed back towards the Bustard. However, it was not to be a straight run in and after a short detour, the pack ran On Inn passing a lone horsewoman and accompanying wolfhound. Back at the Inn, Tiny Tim was welcomed back and Alimentarty gave the crit and thanked the Hares for an excellent New Year's Day outing.

RUN1369

RV: The Malmesbury Arms - Wilton Rd. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, Dancing Brave, 5 Minz, Great Expectations, Slow Coach, Hawkeye & Rick Buttons, a first timer on a very expensive bike. The pack met up at the newly named Malmesbury Arms on the Wilton Rd. The run was scheduled to start at 11.00 a.m., however the Hare was sighted on the Wilton Rd on his bike and WH3 mused collectively "what gives"? However, before the pack set off the Hare turned up at the pub, luckily for him. The trail was quickly picked up heading West along the Wilton Rd, a check and WH3 turned left down Ashford Rd, followed by Cherry Orchard Rd, eventually ending up at Churchfields, which for once was nearly empty. The industrial bit of the run then terminated and the trail followed the course of the River Nadder. A river crossing was offered by the Hare, but the pack did not accept the bait. Back once again in Churchfield, the trail was picked up heading towards the railway station. A debate on the validity of running under the platform tunnel ensued, however this was achieved and the other side by the original Brunel GWR platform was reached. A gentle trot around St Pauls roundabout and it was soon "0n Inn" to the pub. An excellent run and the Hare was thanked for his efforts. ON ON. More HARES & HOUNDS required.

RUN1368

RV: The Duck, Laverstock. HARE: Slow Coach. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, Dancing Brave, 5 Minz, Great Expectations, Fakir and eventually On 3. The pack, four Hounds plus the Hare met up at The Duck, newly renovated and ablaze with Christmas lights. The trail was quickly picked up by Great Expectations heading South towards Petersfinger and the first carol at a check near a convenient lamp post. The trail then changed direction and it was downhill towards Shady Bower where Fakir joined the run. More carols and WH3 ended up at the Swimming Pool. More checks and carols and the pack circumnavigated St Marks roundabout eventually ending up on the London Rd. A check, a right turn, under the railway line and WH3 hit the extremely shiggy Cows Lane heading back towards Laverstock. A check on the Laverstock Rd, a further check at Whitebridge Rd and it was "On Inn" uphill to the pub, much to the relief of Dancing Brave, who was pied having discovered a puncture before the run began. Fakir gave the crit, welcomed On 3, and thanked the Hare for an excellent run and for supplying carol sheets, with print large enough to be read by the majority!!!!!. ON ON More HARES & HOUNDS required

RUN1367

RV: The Royal Oak - Devizes Rd: HARE: Hi Gang. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, Dancing Brave, 5 Minz, Hoi Sin. Slow Coach & Great Expectations. The pack met up at the Royal Oak and after a discussion on the merits of parking in the tiny car park, the trail was quickly picked up heading along the Devizes Rd towards Salisbury and what followed was then a zig zag tour of Bemerton Heath and an inspection of the spectacular displays of Christmas lights, etc, along the way. Eventually, the pack ended up back on the Devizes Rd, a check and the trail was picked up heading down into the Avon Valley. The rural phase then began, including a long leg along the duck boards skirting the river. The sports field opposite the Fire Station was reached, a check, a right turn and WH3 headed uphill to the Devizes Rd, for the second time. The actual Devizes Rd was not reached this time and the trail was picked up heading along the very shiggy tracks just to the South of it. Eventually it was On Inn to the pub and welcome refreshments. Alimentarty gave a crit of sorts and thanked the Hare for his efforts. ON ON.

RUN1366

RV: The Wheatsheaf - Wilton. HARE: Bourne Valley HHH. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, Hi Gang, On 3, 5 Minz, Fakir, Hoi Sin and Summer Lightning. This was a mixed run with the Bourne Valley HHH laid by an ex-WH3 member well known for his use of running water. Suffice it to say that Alimentarty was economical with his hash words when forwarding this e-mail note as he was still in shock from the sub-zero immersions en route. . It would appear that the trail headed towards Land Command up along the avenue, through the woods with a long loop back towards Fugglestone and Quidhampton. A deep bog (casualties included minor cuts to a forehead and much bruised dignity) and the Wylye was crossed twice using ropes (thankfully as the water was chest height and the current strong). The trail then went through Quidhampton back across the Netherhampton Rd past the Wilton lights on the A36 and back to the pub for a welcome change of clothing and copious down-downs of which WH3 picked up 2 - Hoi Sin and Alimentarty for misdemeanours unrecorded. A very sociable run and for those that survived a different experience to the normal WH3. ON ON.

RUN1365

RV: The Amesbury Archer - Solstice Park. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, Hi Gang, Slow Coach and Dancing Brave. This was a bit of a novelty as WH 3 had never in the past run from Solstice Park, albeit they had run through the glutinous white shig in an earlier phase of its development. However, as the Hounds drifted in, all four of them, and having waited for Slow Coach to change, WH3 hit the trail at 6.08 p.m. It was very cold, -1C, and the trail was picked up heading up through the outskirts of Amesbury along fairly icy roads. After a number of checks the trail was picked up heading across country towards Boscombe Down. True to his name the Hare was up to his usual tricks, double and triple check circles and a large figure of eight thrown in to amuse the Hounds. The Pack eventually hit the Boscombe perimeter fence and having achieved a near vertical climb near the old railway bridge, eventually broke out onto the well lit main road leading into the airfield. A number of checks around the new housing estates to the South of Solstice Park and it was then On Inn, for the first time, to the Amesbury Archer along much the same route that we had started out on. The JM gave the crit and thanked the Hare for his efforts on a very cold evening. ON ON

RUN1364

RV: The Five Bells Salt Lane. HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Alimentarty, Great Expectations, Hi Gang, Summer Lightning and 5 Minz. The pack RVd in the car park next door to the pub and set off bang on 6.00 p.m. It was to be a hot trail, but as the Hare had started well in advance the unexpected was to occur as the run progressed. The trail was quickly picked up heading towards Bedwin St and St Edmunds Church, ending up at the Swimming Pool. What followed was a fairly extensive tour of Salisbury, including the Central Car Park and eventually the Cathedral Close. This stage of the run ended with a check at Exeter St followed by an excursion up St Anns St, a check, a left turn and On Inn via Gigant St to the pub, livened up by sets of blobs from a previous run. Alimentarty gave the crit and described the run in detail. The problem was, as the Hare had plenty of time to lay the trail, he didn't waste that time and laid a large number of falsies en route that made the Hounds think and run a bit more as they sorted out the options. The JM thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken eighty minutes, albeit as Great Expectations said on the flat. ON ON

RUN1363

RV: Rai d'Or - Brown St, Salisbury. HARE: Slow Coach. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, Great Expectations, Hoi Sin, Hi Gang, Fakir, On 3, Ember and Alimentarty. The pack RV'd in the car park next door to the pub. This time the weather was OK unlike the downpour the week before. The trail was quickly picked up and it was On Up Fowlers Hill. A check a left turn and WH3 headed towards Elm Avenue. A run around Kelsey Road and then Fairview Road and the pack ended up at St Marks roundabout. The trail then headed up St Marks Avenue, a check a left turn and then the trail meandered along Netheravon Rd ending up at the footbridge over Churchill Way. Another check and the trail zig zagged back along Wyndham Rd, Endless Street , Salt Lane and eventually On Inn to the pub. Alimentarty gave the crit or sort of a crit, as most of the hounds were too busy ordering their WH3 meals (with 'double' starters!) and quantities of Great Bustard! He thanked the Hare for his A1 efforts.

RUN1362

RV: The Three Crowns Harnham. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, Great Expectations, Summer Lightning, Fakir, Ember and Sparky. WH3 RVd at The Three Crowns, Harnham and just as the pack was about to set off the heavens opened and the rain really started to come down. The trail was quickly picked up heading NE along the Town Path towards Crane St. A huddle under a tree, in the downpour and it was decided to cut the run short and abandon the leg around the railway station and that area. The trail was quickly picked up heading along the Crane St then High St into the Close and eventually on past the Cathedral. At this stage all were well and truly soaked. Eventually St Nicholas Rd was reached and after a check, of sorts, the Netherhampton Rd was reached. After a short loop up the old Blandford Rd it was On Inn through the many massive puddles to the pub. Fakir (dried out) gave the crit and thanked and commiserated with the Hare for an excellent run albeit in appalling weather conditions. It took just thirty minutes to complete, one of the shortest (and wettest) runs on record. ON ON

RUN1361

RV: The Plough - Durrington: HARE: Alimentarty. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave and Hi Gang. The pack, all two of them and bikers at that, and the Hare eventually hit the trail a little after 6, in great hope that other runners might turn up. They didn't. What followed was a fair old trip around Durrington with the 50/50 option at each check with Hi Gang going one way and Dancing Brave the other. Although we are now in the torch mode the weather was good, if a little chilly and the hounds enjoyed themselves on this rather unique run or was it a Hash ride? However, all good things must come to an end and after a number of checks near the local school, it was eventually On Inn to the pub. Hi Gang gave the crit and remarked in terms of hounds (in fact bikers) the smallest run he had been on for years. He finished by thanking the Hare for an excellent run that was spot on the hour.

RUN1360

RV: The Dust Hole, Tollgate Rd. Salisbury. HARE: Hi Gang. HOUNDS: Dancing Brave, Fakir, Alimentarty & Summer Lightning. The limited pack eventually hit the trail about 5 minutes late, as two of the Hounds had to relieve their respective calls of nature in the pub!! The trail was picked up heading towards the A36 and then via the Technical College to the Friary. Picking up the trail was proving difficult as a lot of checks had been wiped out during the heavy rain on the previous evening. As a result the Hare had to do some re-checking himself ahead of the run. Exeter St was finally reached, a number of further checks and it was On On westwards along the Harnham Rd. A further check, a left turn and it was On Up to Harnham Hill and the woods. At this stage Fakir and Summer Lightning went their own way as they wrongly thought (due to bum information) that the trail was heading back down towards In-Excess. This was not to be and Alimentarty and Dancing Brave continued to head uphill, eventually arriving at the Old Blanford Rd and joining up with the Hare. At this stage Dancing Brave turned for home as another cross country loop did not seem attractive. Back at the pub Fakir gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that ended at 7.18 p.m. - a little late at this time of the year!!!

RUN1359

RV: The Rose & Crown Bulford. HARE: Hoi Sin. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, 5 Minz, Dancing Brave, Fakir, Alimentarty, Slow Coach, Mad Hatter, On 3 & Great Expectations. The beginning of the run coincided with the rain beginning to come down, but initially not heavily. The trail was quickly picked up heading North from the pub around assorted housing estates, eventually ending up back at the R&C. Having first removed a obstinate nag, the cross country stage across fields then commenced, including clearing four stiles along the route. Not much fun for the bikers!!!!. Another loop around some more muddy acres and WH3 ended up by the old railway sign by the former PSA HQ. It was then up into the woods, down the other side ending up at a check on the old Bulford Camp Rd. A fairly long Run Inthen commenced, a loop was missed out, due to misinformation given by the deputy Hare!!!. The Old Coach Rd was reached eventually and it was quickly On Inn to the pub as the rain got progressively worse. Slow Coach gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run, that had taken just on the hour, with lots of checks. ON ON.

RUN1358

RV: The Butt of Ale - Sunnyhill Rd: HARE: Dancing Brave. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, 5 Minz, Summer Lightning, Ember, Alimentarty, Hoi Sin, Mad Hatter & On 3. The Hare was busily laying the trail, so it is to be assumed that the pack set off at 6.00 p.m., with a hint of rain in the air. The trail was picked up heading downhill in a long loop via numerous streets ending up on Castle Rd. It was then across to Victoria Park, ending up on Hudsons Field. The rain, at this stage, started to come down and after a loop around the Old Castle Inn it was back East along Castle Rd to a check at the road junction by the traffic lights. The trail was quickly located heading uphill along Sunnyhill Rd and it was soon On Inn to the pub as the rain really started to bucket down. Hoi Sin gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken 55 minutes - just about right for this time of the year. Hi Gang claimed that Summer Lightning had lost/dropped her pants at some stage near the end of the run, but that cannot be vouched for? ON ON!

RUN1357

RV: The Greyfisher - Harnham: HARE: Fakir. HOUNDS: Hi Gang, 5 Minz, Great Expectations, Twin Rocks, Alimentarty & On 3. The run set off, after the Hare had said that he had to go and finish laying the trail. The Hare pointed out a loop to the first check which was in Britford Lane on the other side of the pub. WH3 then went on a tour of the Cathedral Close and then out onto to Exeter St. and St Anne's St. The ring road was then navigated, with WH3 looking back and admiring the Cathedral view in the evening light. The pack then headed under the bypass towards the Tollgate pub and then on to the Church and churchyard nearby, where Hi Gang asked 5 Minz not to blow the horn in case he woke the dead!!!!!. The run then went past Salisbury College and then through Churchill Gardens and then back in the direction of the pub. Arrival at the pub was not to be and a long loop was then undertaken around Britford, up through the estate to the Odstock Rd and the ambulance station roundabout and eventually On Inn to the Greyfisher via a final cunning detour. An excellent run and trail that had taken around 65 minutes. ON ON!

RUN1356

RV: The 5 Rivers Leisure Centre. Apres: The George & Dragon, Castle St. HARE: Alimentarty. HOUNDS: Hoi Sin, 5 Minz, Hi Gang, Great Expectations, Fakir plus On3 for drinks afterwards. A new Hasher, Summer Lightning turned up as a first timer. The Hash started at the Leisure Centre and headed for the local Fire Station. The trail then looped back in the direction of Victoria Park. WH3 streamed through the park and then headed down to the Sailsbury Rugby Club practice field. Hudsons field was then encountered and the trail headed down to the lower track beneath Old Sarum. The pack then turned for home along the cycle track that heads back towards the leisure centre, with a loop around the park. Only four runners went back to the George and Dragon, but the few that did had a nice chat about previous runs in the area, downed with the odd jar of ale!!. ON ON

RUN1355

RV: The Wheatsheaf Inn Lower Woodford. HARES: Slowcoach, Great Expectations & Paul Johnson (ex Epi Hasher) HOUNDS: Tiny Tim, 5 Minz, Magic and 6 assorted ex Epi Hashers plus pups. The mixed pack gathered at the Wheatsheaf for a brief by Slowcoach on Wilton rules and the varied wildlife, Llamas, Alpacas, Camels, Donkeys and Horses, that would be seen during the run. The trail was picked up heading towards Salisbury, then on to paths until the drive leading to Little Durnford Manor was reached. The trail was next found heading East over the Avon, past the Manor, with all the animals in the park to the junction of Netton Rd. After some relaxed checking along The Avenue and Salterton Down, where the view was enjoyed by the visitors it was then down to Salterton Farm. The trail then led SW over the Avon into Lower Woodford and back to the RV at the pub. The pack had a pleasant lunch and Great Expectations did a brisk trade in Pashmina orders. ON ON

RUN1354

RV: Z Tank Crossing. Apres: The Dog & Gun - Netheravon: HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Hoi Sin, Alimentarty, Great Expectations, Hi Gang, Dancing Brave & Marie Anne, a first timer. WH3 met up at the Z Tank Crossing on the Eastern side of SPTA on an excellent evening for this time of the year, warm and sunny and no wind. The trail was picked up heading NE and as usual from the Hare, went in something of a circular fashion around various tracks and woods and lots of nettles. Within the space of around 100 metres, or so, WH 3 achieved no less than four checks. Along the way we were briefed on a Time Team dig by Great Expectations and Dancing Brave wondered if the Romans hashed!!. The trail then eventually turned to the West and headed home, albeit after a clash with an electric fence. Back at the pub Hoi Sin welcomed Marie Anne and thanked the Hare for an excellent run marked by his trademark of double ringed checks. The run took fifty minutes in all which was excellent. ON ON

RUN1353

RV: The Silver Plough Pitton. HARE: On 3. HOUNDS: 5 Minz, Alimentarty, Mad Hatter, Great Expectations, Hi Gang, Bogley, Hoi Sin & Dancing Brave. WH3 met up at the Silver Plough, a well known WH3 venue. The trail was quickly picked up heading West and downhill into the village. Some zig zagging then ensued around the village and the pack ended up at a check quite close to the pub. However an On Inn, fifteen minutes or so into the run, was not a viable option and WH3 headed up a very steep hill to the East of the village. There was no looking back after this steep climb and the trail headed downwards in a loop along well known tracks around the village and eventually after a fairly long run it was On Inn to The Silver Plough. Alimentary gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run that had taken fifty minutes in all. ON ON

RUN1352

RV: The Old Castle Inn - Castle Rd, Salisbury. Hare: Slow Coach. HOUNDS: 5 Minz, Alimentarty, Twin Rocks, Great Expectations, Fakir, Bogley, Log Dog & Hi Gang. WH3 set off along the right side of the ramparts of Old Sarum. It then went down the bank to the bottom track towards Hudson's Field. The run progressed down to the bottom gate and along to Victoria Park. WH3 then hit Castle Road and then began a long and exhausting climb all the way up to Bishopdown. It was then On Innalong well known track to the rear of the pub. It was a good run, but in terms of time taken it had lasted for around seventy five minutes, however as a bonus, the weather was very good indeed and thoroughly warranted the additional 15 minutes exercise. Alimentarty gave the crit and thanked the Hare for his efforts in laying an excellent live trail.ON ON

RUN1351

RV: The Lions Head - Middle Winterslow. Hare: Hi Gang. HOUNDS: 5 Minz, Alimentarty, Slow Coach, Great Expectations, Mad Hatter, Bogley and On 3. WH3 turned up at the Lions Head at Middle Winterslow. The pack set off into the village and then East out of the village. WH3 proceeded down various trails with memories of a recent Hash from the Lord Nelson, but navigating, on this occasion, the numerous trails around Middle Winterslow from different directions. The trail was well laid by Hi Gang and it took around sixty five minutes, albeit a short cut had to improvised, because if the trail had continued on its planned course, it would have taken much longer. Alimentarty is thanked for providing the notes, upon which, the above is based. ON ON

RUN1350

RV: Yarnbury Castle. Apres: The Boot, Berwick St James. HARE: 5 Minz. HOUNDS: Magic, Alimentarty, Slow Coach, Great Expectations, Mad Hatter & Dancing Brave. WH3 arrived at the RV at Yarnbury Castle - a dodgy business to say the least, coming off the A303 with limited vision left or right and all traffic doing max revs. However, Alimentarty directed WH3 traffic to the RV and all made it in one piece. The trail was picked up heading North and headed in this direction on a rough track for ten minutes or more. Eventually a check was sighted and the run then proceeded to go around in circles, for the next twenty five minutes or so, not an unusual tactic for the Hare using his double and triple ring checks!!!!!. The Deptford Down grass landing strip was crossed and WH3 enjoyed the views of Copehill Down, or was it Westdown Camp, in the distance. The run continued and eventually ended up at a check by the notice board giving details of the flora and fauna to be found on Parsonage Down. WH3 did not have much time to observe the F & F, as the Hare had set a vicious and long dog leg that went a long way down to the East and then a long way back up to the notice board, from where the Pack had started. Eventually it was On Inn and the Pack headed on back to the RV, along the same long track that it had started the run on. Alimentarty gave the crit and welcomed Magic, a former On Sec, who was doing a recce for the Epi Run in September. He thanked the Hare for his efforts in laying an excellent trail that had taken one hour and twelve minutes. ON ON

RUN1349

RV: The Lord Nelson, Middle Winterslow. HARE: Hi Gang. HOUNDS: 5 Minz, Alimentarty, Slow Coach, Great Expectations, Fakir & Dancing Brave. The pack gathered at the Lord Nelson, a well know and well trod venue, at Middle Winterslow. For once Fakir was on time!!! (oo er) The trail was picked up heading North through the village and it continued on this course for a short time. A narrow path, somewhat overgrown, was encountered and Great Expectations and Dancing Brave decided to give it a miss and join WH3 further to the East. This was not to be as the Hare had decided to go much further North than usual and Great Expectations and Dancing Brave continued on their own way for the remainder of the run. Not much fun - (but more fun than 150 yards of groin-high supernettles). The pack continued on its way to the North in the direction of East Winterslow and at one stage was in danger of being molested by assorted bullocks/heffers as this long loop progressed. Not very common in the hashing world, but worse has been encountered: sheep butting! Eventually, after another loop WH3 headed back in the direction of the Lord Nelson. Slow Coach gave the crit and thanked the Hare for an excellent run, across very picturesque countryside, albeit in uncharted territory, that had taken one hour and around fifteen minutes to complete. Plenty more trails around here wethinks. ON ON. P.S. for CAMRA readers - the Ringwood had run out.
