JANET PLANET TAKES MANHATTAN |
River Cities Jazz Used as Stormtroopers! |
Wisconsin Rapids, WI- Ok, so it was Wisconsin Rapids, not Manhattan, but we wanted to grab your attention like Janet Planet and River Cities Jazz grabbed the attention of the almost capacity crowd at the Perfoming Arts Center of Wisconsin Rapids on Friday September 28. From the opening instrumental performance of Chuck Mangione's "Children of Sanchez" to the heart and show stopping rendition of "That's Life", Janet Planet and River Cities Jazz had the audience mesmerized and left them wanting more. Janet Planet has a voice that has been called one of the "best half dozen of our time", and she certainly used it to full advantage this night. Other selections performed included standards such as "Good Bye Pork Pie Hat", "Cheek to Cheek", "Blue Skies" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" Additionally great performances of "Over The Rainbow" and even The Beatles "Norwegian Wood" Were rendered. |
Janet Planet |
Stellar performances were given by the entire 17 piece River Cities Jazz ensemble, particularly all of the featured soloists'. Perhaps the most impressive and exciting being the drum solo performed by River Cities percussionist Randy Charles, whose efforts prompted Janet to ask him exactly what he'd been eatting! If there were any criticism of the show it would be perhaps that Janet wasn't featured enough. River Cities played quite a few instrumentals and while all were great without exception, the audience would have preferred a bit more of Janet Planet. However without relevance to this performance it may be, it should be noted that River Cities Jazz has moved their Thursday night performance at the now defunct All-American Bistro in Wisconsin Rapids to Lance's Never Inn, Wisconsin Rapids.
