Chapter Ten |
Nikki sighed. “Ok, but its really weird. “See. Troy and I lived in the 1920s. We were both 18 years old there.” “And my dad worked for this company. But he was way too smart for them. Is this sounding like a movie of the week yet?” He chuckled, “So he began making his own inventions.” “And what? He made a time machine?” “Lance… you’re close.” Lance’s eyes shot open, “Whoa…” Nikki smiled at him. “So his dad opened this… kind of portal in their celler. And he told us not to ever go down there.” She shook her head, “But tell a kid to do something, and what are they gonna do, right? We were curious. And then…” “You just got sucked in.” “And landed in the seventies. Weird people back then.” Nikki countered. “So Troy, is that what you meant when you told me that you and Nikki went way back?” Nikki’s eyes flew to Ryan, standing with a crowd of friends in the doorway. “Yeah.” She whispered. “I’m betting that’s what he meant.” “So Nikki and I were dropped into two families in Georgia. We knew we couldn’t tell anyone. I mean, born in 1908? Who’d believe us?” “Plus we would be dropped back into our old lives. We did do a search on our parents. They had died.” Troy nodded, “And by the time we realized we should search for ourselves, it was too late.” Justin wiped a tear out of his eye. “You were dead too.” Nikki hugged him for support, “Yeah. So we went on with life. I love it here. I can’t believe that now…” She trailed off. Troy continued for her. “We only have another twenty minutes before we’ll be taken back.” Ryan shook his head, “You can’t leave! You’ll die!!” Nikki kissed him, “None of us have any power over it.” “But I love you! What more power is there?” Ryan yelled. Nikki took his hand in hers. “I love you too. But this is stronger than any of you could ever imagine. Jenny hugged Nikki close, “You’re my best friend. I’m sorry I did this to you. And you too, Troy.” He shrugged as Nikki walked away. “Eh. I’m going home. I’m almost happy about it.” Nikki let out a sob from where she was standing, talking to all her friends. “Nikki’s another story.” Jenny whispered. “She’ll be alright. But I won’t be with her.” Troy smiled. “You mean she’ll be all alone?” Jenny asked, horrified. “No. She’ll have company. He motioned Nikki over. “Time to go.” He handed her a package. |
