I was born in Heidelberg, Germany to an American father (D.
Lee Wentworth, deceased) and a Norwegian born and raised mother (Mona Wentworth – maiden
name Hagen) on September 9, 1974. They named me Windi Kristine Wentworth. (Have
you ever heard the song “Windy” by the Association? I was named after it.) I
was born in an Army hospital but because I had a German doctor I have both a
German and an American birth certificate. I was born with American citizenship
and took Norwegian citizenship when I was 18, but more about that later.
Because dad was in the military we moved around a lot. After
Heidelberg we moved to Portland, OR where my brother Erik Lee was born in
December 1976. We went back to Germany for several years and among other
places, lived in Garmisch Parkenkirschen for a few years. Would you believe
that we lived in an apartment where Hitler used to stay when he came to town?
No wonder I thought that place was haunted! In 1984 we moved back to the States
and dad retired from the military in Alaska. We lived in a house in the suburbs
of Anchorage and I had a somewhat normal childhood and teen years there. Just
as I was getting used to High School mom and dad split and mom moved back to
Norway. I spent a couple of years traveling between the two and settled in
Norway to finish school in 1992. Because I was a competitive ice skater as a
child I had applied for Norwegian citizenship in 1990 and was granted it in
1992. Don’t travel to Israel on a Norwegian passport if you’re flying back to
the US. Just a side story. Anyway, I love Norway and in some senses consider it
home, but also love the US and have decided to settle here. Sorry mom – you’re
just going to have to move here.
After school in Norway I moved to New York City and got my
BA from The New School for Social Research – now called The New School
University. Ridiculous isn’t it? During my junior year of college I started
working for PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) and I’m still here. I jokingly
tell people that one of my PBS passwords has the number 26 in it and that when
I first started working at PBS I told myself that if I was still here when I
was 26 that I was a big fat looser. Well, I’m still here. You be the judge.
I moved to Washington, DC/Northern Virginia in 1999 and really like it here.
Sometimes I miss New York, but I can
always go visit, right?. I keep wondering how I can be so lucky and how in the heck I
finally realized what happiness is. I love my job, I’m happy with my living
situation, my health isn’t too bad – I even quit smoking. The biggest news is that Shane and I got
married on June 7, 2003 at his parent's house in Carlisle, PA.
My last name has changed so I'm now Mrs. Windi Julias. Make sure to update your adress book.
In case you’re wondering what I do for a living I’m a Web site content manager at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. I left PBS after seven years. It was a difficult decision, but I've been very happy at NRECA and I'm starting grad school (part-time) in the fall of 2005 -- an MBA program.
