PASTORAL COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS - APRIL 2003

The discussion at the April 8th Pastoral Council Meeting revolved around the following:

  1. Legacy Guidelines:
  • The 2002 allocations were proposed as; 70% to Holy Cross Parish, 12% to the Archdiocese, 15% to charitable works outside of Holy Cross Parish, and 3% to the Resurrection Parish Building Fund. A motion passed supporting the proposal.
  • Funding allocations for office expenditures, Liturgy Council requests, and Pro-Life requests were approved for a total of $12,600.

  1. Outreach to Inactive Members:
Of the 650 families in Holy Cross Parish over  400 are active.  Discussion revolved around  how we can reach out to the additional 200  or more families to provide opportunities for  participation in the Holy Cross family. The  Public Relations Committee will come back  with outreach proposals for the next meeting.

  1. Way of the Cross:
A letter was submitted to Council expressing strong dissatisfaction with the political overtones of one of the Way of the Cross services held at Holy Cross. The letter stated clearly that, in the opinion of the writer, the Iraq war had no place in the reflections of Christ on the road to Calvary. In the discussion that ensued it was articulated that politics and religion should not be mixed. It was also noted that some parishioners felt it was very meaningful reflection on the suffering of Christ in the lives of people today. Therein lies the dilemma: as soon as you mix politics and religion your are going to encounter strong feelings on both sides of any issue. A recommendation was made, and accepted, that in the future all materials for the Way of the Cross be reviewed by Father Norm prior to the devotion being held.

  1. Miscellaneous:
  • Council reviewed the role and mandate of the Public Relations Committee. We will be reviewing a different committee at each Pastoral Council meeting to educate all members about each committee's mandate and, hopefully, to support these committees in their service to parishioners.

  • Leadership Team Performance appraisal forms were distributed. These are a vehicle for meaningful feedback for Father Norm, Jane, Theresa and Sandra, to help them as they carry out their many duties in their roles as Holy Cross Parish leaders.

  • Reference was made to the Vision Quest Action Plan contained in the April edition of the Archdiocesan newsletter, the Arch. It would be time well spent by all parishioners to becoming familiar with the Diocesan position on strategic actions to move us forward.

  • Myles Myers from the Regina Separate School System will be making a presentation at our next Pastoral Council meeting to address some of the issues raised at the Annual Meeting around religious instruction.

  • A card will be sent to Msg. Hogan congratulating him on his 60 years of priesthood. Father Hogan was pastor of Holy Cross when it was first established.  A   donation of $60 will be made to Martha House where he currently resides.

The next meeting of the Pastoral Council is Tuesday, May 13, 2003 beginning with Mass at 7:00 p.m. Parishioners are welcome to attend.
